Rocky Mountain Race Week 2021: A Weekend of Thrills and Chills
The 2021 Rocky Mountain Race Week was an event to remember, with its mix of adrenaline-pumping action, heart-stopping drama, and humor that had everyone in stitches. The first few laps saw a heated battle between Peterbilt 359 owner and driver Johnny "The King" Brown, his opponent in the #27 Peterbilt, and Chet's truck in the #22 Peterbilt. The pace was blistering, with both trucks trading positions on each lap.
But as the event progressed, it became clear that something was amiss. A head gasket failure at the top of the track had forced driver Brian to make an unscheduled stop under the hood. His teammate, however, was not so fortunate. The #15 Freightliner's engine blew its top end, leaving it a sitting duck.
Despite the setbacks, the competitors refused to give up. As they navigated the treacherous mountain terrain, each truck had its own story to tell – some of which were downright hilarious. "I love blue," shouted one competitor as he sped by his opponents, "It's my life!" Another driver, who would eventually take home the top prize, was overheard remarking, "This is freaking cool!"
As the day wore on, things only got more intense. In a stunning upset, a newcomer to the racing scene took the lead with an astonishing 26-21 in the final round of competition. His victory was all the more remarkable given that he had never before competed at this level.
When asked about his strategy going into the event, the driver replied, "I don't think I'll change anything – it's pretty rough on that car." It seemed that caution was not the order of the day in Rocky Mountain Race Week 2021. Instead, drivers opted for all-out aggression, willing to push their vehicles to the limit in pursuit of victory.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of organizers and competitors alike, this event would become a benchmark of excellence for years to come – one that showcased what it truly means to be a rock 'n' roll racing machine. kearney nebraska to great bend kansas we decided to go ahead and start the day off with number one overall tom uh tom likes to leave early so it's 5 30 in the morning right now we're gonna go and get on the road follow him show you guys all the cars on the way here we go we got tom mcgilton number one overall we got the baileys box doom right here man tom when you say 5 30 you mean 5 30 on the dot we walk out it's 5 30 it's like oh they're leaving all right yeah well kind of beat this heat that's for damn sure so but you made it oh yeah 75 degrees is way better than 105 degrees yes great we go over this every year but remind me of the capacity and what kind of mileage you get in the commercial we've been getting right around almost eight miles gallon with it here lately uh between seven and a half to eight depending on if we're hitting the head and then or what that's him hold 14 gallons here oh and this is the right side and that's five gallons on that side but other than that nowhere how often do you stop how many miles can you make it on things we can go up to 80 but she's sucking air at that point gotcha though but we've been stopping every uh about about every 60 miles 65 miles gotcha she'll pretty much run on anything that burns yeah i'm just going to put some 87 out 3000 horsepower car 87 octane what kind of fuel do you guys run the ship box on it's flex fuel so we can get e85 and then it was on the map saying we could get e85 here so you're we'll go ahead and fill it up with that but then it'll blend we'll end up with gas in there but we prefer when we get to the track to have as high a percentage of e85 as possible is that what you guys run at the track primarily it's the 85 whatever's in the tank whatever will burn yeah whatever's in the tank we're not putting out enough power to be too cookie uh how big is the the cell on this uh 17 gallons we were lower than i thought again yeah 13 and a half gallons the reason why they're on the road at 5 30 morning is to beat the heat it is currently 75 degrees it is gorgeous out yeah and it's way cooler than 105 that's going to be later so that's the reason we're on the road early and they're moving pretty good uh tom's going about five over something like that so we're cooking is the hatch being open the key to getting air flow in this thing when you guys are moving down the road no we put at different angles and everything i don't think there's any secret to getting there i don't think you just you just don't get much gotcha so but he gets cruising right along though no issues nope all smooth yeah we keep it slower for him because he can only do like 70 so we try and keep it there this doesn't like 70 it wants to go 80 or wants to go 65 gotcha what did you guys do with the end of doing with the turbo anything yet or no there's the other turbo getting shipped there we had vice grips on it to hold it from spinning but then they didn't want to stay on there so we uh um so i ended up i just got the wastegate off so it's just straight exhaust dumping right out there right back behind the um firewall so it's gotta be nice to just put not any load on that turbo so right yeah so like at an idle that turbo actually spins backwards because the other turbo's pushing through the inner oh right air's coming out but once you get off idle there's enough pressure on it that it just kind of spins right but at least it's not so the tune-up's all off now because yeah so it'll get you there though yep so all smooth whatever you gotta do for race week exactly whatever so we're at our first checkpoint of the day it is this beautiful courthouse in this small town let me see what the name of it is one second that's not a sign for it never mind anyway it's this courthouse right here just like everything else you can stop take a picture prove you were here and continue on the route this is the first of i think three how many checkpoints out there today corey two two checkpoints today good morning corey how are we doing good morning fred how are you good how's the drive been so far it's been good been smooth been cool what time did you get up and uh get on the road this morning got up at four four thirty yeah four thirty and then had to go top off with the at the other end of town and then look back and jam out so just been cruising along no issues yeah 70 75 and it's been just rolling so yeah try to beat the heat a little bit you know yep so yeah smooth sailing so far well get your picture and uh we'll see on the road thanks see you guys so you guys end up getting a wiffle for this thing or no we end up health checking the engine and scoping the blower and it's acceptable okay it's not bad is it still making a little noise or it it when it cooled off we uh it got better we changed the oil in it serviced it and everything too it's it's a little noisier than normal but acceptable would your et about the same and for that air we didn't spray it uh yesterday because the track wasn't there for the radials but yeah it everything's on par so i don't think everything's good motors within two or three percent blower looks decent so i think we're good good yeah well you only got a little bit further to go for for the last day so what 100 miles or so something like that i guess yeah all right so we're gonna make it get there early and try to make it hit early because the rx7 has got me worried now he banged off the nice pass last night he was a 9 45 64. 9.65 is that the is that the fastest pass of any stick card this week damn so he's is so you're number one and he's number two yeah he's a tenth behind me oh geez okay yeah so it's gonna be a good good one to end it off we're probably gonna uh we may try to blow it up and win so we'll put the biggest noxious time you guys have pulled over today no not exactly oh geez yeah we got the first time first time was my fault because we actually didn't run out of gas okay i thought we had more fuel i can't see the pool gauge because it's behind the holley dash and i thought we had plenty to get further but we didn't so we ran out like and we posted in the gas station parking lot so that was fine okay and then just rolling into town here fuel pressure started dropping again but it's not from overheating i don't know what it is he cracked the line and burped it and yeah it's fine again okay i'm smiling i'm comfortable with it we have about 100 miles to go or something something like that between 150 something like that yeah and the issues yesterday i don't think were as major as we thought you know we were just tired and you know fighting through stuff so yeah you guys you guys are i don't know if we'll see you tomorrow but yeah it was a long day yesterday oh yeah it was really hot out too so i don't blame you at all yeah we're gonna make it a great band we'll make a pass i'll have to look at my logs from last night to see if the motors hurt because it leaned out and popped and died so i don't know if i'm going to do a full pass under power but we'll make a pass and it'll look good awesome well glad to see you guys still on the road thanks hopefully we don't see a on the side driving from like farm to farm to try to find the owner i think he goes over there i got i got a new buddy come on he's mine now that's a baby polar bear is what that is we're going back home there you go all right you want the camera you're rolling with him hi good boy what's up buddy all right we're pretty sure we found his home come out here and this pops out here already just chilling they seem to know each other is this home okay he's peeing all right i guess this is home he claimed it anyway pretty sure this is the house we knocked on the door nobody's here we did give them some water though you go buddy we'll see you later all right bye we're rolling up on our second checkpoint it is this giant freaking egg whoa that thing's huge for some reason in the picture this egg i thought was like six foot tall not 30 feet tall this is the biggest egg ever this is the checkpoint i've been waiting for this whole time a giant egg yes so cool so weird you got a little rowdy all right guys we're gonna go ahead and call it we got about an hour left of the drive we're gonna go ahead and head to the track see you guys there oh yeah they're changing the turbo we just rolled in great bend we were about to stop by our hotel we look over and tom and aiden are here swapping out turbos i'm not sure where they're at but looks like they're in the process of doing so this is easy to work on how's it going you guys don't want your shot you need to sneak in there because he's laying on that couch pastel oh he's passed out right now in the lobby the back part of the lobby do you guys just have a torn part waiting for the new turbo or what yeah waiting for the fedex guy to get here so we got the turbo out of it just waiting it's nice the whole front end comes off though that's nice yeah so as soon as they get here we should put this turbo in it head to the track we're to do it at the track and then we're like and then we're coming into town and we stopped at the sonic whatever we need to eat so we stopped there and then we said um he said you know what we're just using the hotel be shadier than anywhere we're going to get at the track oh yeah for sure we were rolling past where it was coming in we were all passing all doors were open that the front end's out there oh they're definitely swapping the turbo right now continue to pro chase for more information on this from the track we've had mitchell following us he's had no problems but he just lost a belt mitchell what happened i know what happened i think my locked up ac compressor belt kicked off and then it knocked off the other one yeah we're two miles from the track i know i was just gonna drive there and then the temp gauge just starts going like okay yeah we're gonna have to stop but i think i can just put it back on well better get to it sir yeah racing started racing's gonna start in five minutes actually i don't know five minutes so i get there and sit there until it's nice out oh otherwise you're gonna leave the shop yeah man let's pull the tools all right get the toolbox we made it it is day seven we are back in great bend every car that makes it back here today has driven over 1300 miles five race days four different tracks that's pretty awesome so i'm going to go around the pits not everybody's here yet still a lot of cars on the road racing doesn't start for about an hour to 15 minutes we'll go around the pits check it with some folks tell you guys the racing action here a little bit one of the things i meant to show you guys all week is uh this is the mad max car and this is their trailer you might not be able to tell it just looks like a black trailer right now but if you get up close it's 100 carbon fiber check this out i think the only thing that's not carbon is the fenders everything else is carbon that is insane quint made it back clint i'm here what's up buddy doing good how was the drive it was good not too bad at all it was better than yesterday for sure yeah you know what half the distance so going well we'll just keep trying to get forward here and what we're doing still had some more issues yesterday uh i had to take the hot side completely apart because i blew gaskets off oh really yeah when i built the system that wasn't measured accurately i could take the plane forward so but uh i think we've got everything fixed up right now we'll let it cool down we got our pass to end the week and that we'll go for a second you're going to wait till tonight though it cools down you're just going to make hot laps i i say that we're going to drive dude so i can say this now that we're here we finally made a race week without breaking down well you still got to make a pass well but we made it here yeah you made it here this is over 1300 taking the duck off depending on that yeah you know it's just a little things give me an et what's the goal all stripped down tuned up what do we got i want to go a 10 i'm gonna say a 10-1 but i i out probably so maybe wait till six seven keep making passes okay just send it if i can just get one then i'll probably keep going too i don't care i'll burn the thing down today everybody's got that thing all the way home so but he finished race week in that c4 corvette slash studebaker thing the freddenstein the freddenstein freddenstein i think that's what it's called did you find some issues with it you didn't want to take a pass or whatever yeah we we dropped down about 10 pounds oil pressure and i'm not going to try to tear it up gotcha i was i was thinking like you still got to get it in do all of race week and drive it home there's a handful of guys that do it bill that has the galaxy does it uh there's a few others that do it but that's a different kind of dedication to race week you're driving your race car to race week you're gonna drive 1400 miles race and race five different days and then drive it home that's that's intense right there this is old school looking higher with a lot of new tech i'm pretty sure and i've been seeing it run all week it's pretty quick but i've yet to talk to him i didn't mean it to so i'm gonna do that right now how's it going good i've been seeing this thing run all week it presses me i've yet to come over to talk to you about it so i figured i could do it now appreciate that what year is it 1932 hudson really and obviously it's got ls ls53ls okay what's the rest of the setup what are we looking at so 53ls 76 millimeter turbo t-56 six-speed oh it's a six-speed car it's six people yeah we're racing in the stick shift class what ets are you running with this so not very good here we've been having a lot of traction problems in the rear end we went through two rear ends if it wasn't this week no right before we oh okay gotcha if it wasn't for quick performance we wouldn't be here oh you know we ate the rear end out the week before we came here gotcha blew it right out the back gotcha so and every time launching it's just it's scary launching it hooks too hard on the rear first day out here we like popped the front end off the ground it was bad this car it looks rowdy going down the track because it's not like you chopped it it looks it or is it shocking no it's 100 okay factory the way it looks we just took the hood skirts off and we widened the rear fenders three inches okay i figured it looks normally see these cars slammed on the ground but the way it looks now and when it goes off track i'm like that thing looks cool just looks like a like a old school mob car that just got a whole mess of steam we were going to make a comfortable driver and uh we had ac and everything in it but due to we went through three engines to get here and i just couldn't get it done in time and it's our first time so we were like we had to make it gotcha what's that what's the goal today what are you doing so i'm gonna go run one pass try to work run what i've been like 11-0 or something like that there then i'm gonna put it on kill and swing for the fences everybody's doing that today everybody's doing the trailers here so uh we're gonna let her eat after i do my first one and i can do one and technically be done but right i'm gonna run it many times they'll let me today hell yeah see what i can get out of it this is your first race week first race week well as of right now you've made it over 1300 miles and you've done four race days so all you got to do is make the all you do is break the beams and you you find you solve it dude and since we built the car we're 1500 miles on this car since we built it really yeah and 1300 of those were just our race we drove it to pueblo one time grenaded the rear end out and other than that that's all on a brand new wow that's some dead that that's that's some faith in your work this is our this is our first one we did the chassis everything on it damn well congrats for making it 1300 miles go up there make a pass man okay oh yeah 11 45 at 132 for the hudson so what'd you think good blew a gasket out on the header gotcha gotcha so we're gonna get that fixed and give her health for the next time you just gotta keep running it run it got it figured out so i would ask what the game plan is today but let's go to uh i'm just gonna 10.000 it safe on the first one because if we didn't turn like a nine then it's gonna be really bad but pretty much every trip to be nintendo here in the first stage you only got two passes that just speaks to the real reliability of these this car and this is exactly why i built it because i just beat the crap out of my cars like why do you want to do this right well now you know that was easy on it so when i drove i'm like dad on cruise control i was like martin lost big shout out also to our crew because without matt fred whitney and christian just kicking ass and stinson back home helping us out i wouldn't be able to race this this week so we got a good team it's literally a dream to race this car on this event racing this car is literally a dream it's so cool i keep telling people the trade racing's just a reason to be here the crews and hanging out with all these people here is just that's why we do it so at 155 for corey not bad yeah that was our a to b just to lock the class get it done when it cools off we'll start playing yeah he wants to swing for it so that's miserable out here right now nice work we'll see you back up here absolutely corey was that a 919 was that what it was 919 in the heat on 10 pounds of boost not bad not bad that was killer were you afraid were you and i added about four or five more pounds up top and as long as the 60 foot's the same it it'll go yes so have you done a seven in the car before 779 it's dropped 184 okay i just waited at the other end it was 37.70 with me i guess that's awesome yeah it's all steel right all steel all real glass oh one point 100 stock suspension yeah it's it's as i guess as original as you can make it while still making it go seven yeah it's it's oh it's old school but it's got a lot of cool new tech in it that's making it do this absolutely well congrats on the 19. hopefully we see a seven later so that secures hot rod really oh hell yeah that's awesome yeah i i only had to run assuming john wishman runs the same 890 but with this low nine second pass he would have to run probably a high six oh wow
