The Nomad Base Station Pro: Revolutionizing Wireless Charging
This is the wireless charger that's about to change everything. What is going on, fam? It's Andrew here from Apple Insider, and this is the Nomad Base Station Pro. It's a new, beefier iteration on their popular base station wireless charger, but it has a whole lot more going on under the surface than they may appear.
If you're familiar with their other base stations or base stations plus Apple watch, you're likely to be familiar with the construction of the base station Pro. They really just follow the same design, just a little bit larger. So, it has an entirely metal body with that really, really nice Korwin leather along the top. The leather not only gives a good cushion for your devices but just gives a more premium feel. The whole thing is simple, subtle, and minimally branded with just a small Nomad logo in that top-right hand corner.
So, what makes the Bay station Pro really different? Well, it's what's going on on the inside. This is what the inside of a nomad Bay station probe basically looks like. It's a printed layer of coils that layer coils are very thin on it to be much thinner than a lot of competition out there and allows you to place any of your devices anywhere you want on the mat to charge.
The base station Pro can charge three devices at once, whether that's two iPhones and a set of air pods or three iPhones. Whatever it is that you're gonna be lying around, you can charge three devices at the same time. And it's all powered over USB C, which is great because USB C is the new standard. You likely already have USB C Chargers around, and you can always disconnect it from here and plug it into your iPad or any other USB C device that you have.
Right now, this is still a prototype. It's a working prototype but there are still some minor bugs in there that no Matt is working through before these begin shipping early 2020. We did get to go hands-on with a working prototype using that era technology just stripped down without all the nomad's fancy bells and whistles, and honestly, it was impressive. It was amazing how you could set your device down move it across the charging pad and it just continues to charge the entire time. It worked very well.
We even could get really close to the edges or the corners and still charge our phone as a team. Put it basically, if both sides of the phone are on the pad at the same time then you're going to be able to charge your phone and in our testing that seemed pretty accurate to let you know how you're charging is going. There are three subtle satellites right on the front of the device to let you know in one two or three devices are currently drawing power.
The cancellation of air power was a huge blow, and we've seen tons of accessory makers scrambling to bring their three-in-one wireless chargers to market that do their best to imitate air power whether it's charging all your devices or just some version of free placement. But out of all our testing only one of them has gotten closest to being a real free placement wireless charger and that is the Nomad base station Pro.
You can't order it yet but stay tuned because when you can we'll put a link down below in the description, and lastly, we're really excited to try the finished product when it finally starts to ship early this year.
