The Lamborghini Aventador Roadster: A Car That Embodies Excess and Elegance
It's now time to introduce one of the most outrageous cars ever created, the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster. This brand new 27 mph convertible is a car that can be summed up in just one word: ridiculous. It's the most over-the-top, preposterous, lunatic car I've ever had the pleasure of driving, and I'm testing it on one of the world's greatest roads, the Black Mountain Pass in South Wales.
Nothing on sale creates a bigger impact than this car, and the price you pay for everyone staring at you is £288,000, which is 28 grand more than the hard top. You'd expect Lamborghini to give you 28G worth of high-tech folding roof, but they don't. Instead, the roof consists of two carbon fiber panels that weigh around 6kgs each. To remove them, you fold the seats forward and undo their clips, then with your fingers crossed at the rain, hold them open the boot and slide them in one by one. It takes a couple of minutes after a bit of practice, but by comparison to the Ferrari 458, it takes just 13 seconds.
Luckily, the roof is the only slow thing about the Aventador Roadster's acceleration. This car has got a 6 and A2 ler V12 normally aspirated engine, which is absolutely amazing. The noise, the drama – it's quick, you know! It's an epic engine that probably makes this one of the nicest-sounding engines I've ever had the pleasure of driving.
Even Lamborghini tips their hats to fuel economy, with a stop-start system that shuts down one side of the V12 if you drive it gently. But let's be honest, when you're behind the wheel of something as powerful and beautiful as this car, who cares about fuel efficiency? The Aventador Roadster has a carbon fiber monox chassis despite weighing 50kg more than the hard top, thanks to a bit of extra bracing. It's no heavier than a BMW 5 series, which is just mind-boggling.
There's a myth amongst petrol heads that a well-driven sports car can keep up with a cumbersome supercar on twisty roads. But now we're going to test that myth and put the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster's performance into perspective. We've got a Toyota GT86, which is the best value driver's car on the market – you can buy 11 of these for the price of one of those Lamborghinis. So, we thought we'd put a stunt man behind the wheel of this Toyota to see if he can keep up with me behind the wheel of that Lamborghini.
As we drive up the mountain roads, the Aventador Roadster quickly takes the lead, leaving the GT86 in its dust within two corners. It's disappeared from view, and I'm starting to wonder how that little car managed to keep up for as long as it did. The Lamborghini's power is truly brutal, but it's utterly usable – this car just demonstrates what an amazing piece of kit it is.
But the real question is: how much does this car cost? £288,000 might seem like a lot, but it's almost half the price of the Pagani Huayra, which is nearly £600,000 more than this car. So, when you consider that this Lamborghini is one of the most desirable cars on the planet, and it's basically half the price of the hypercar that's considered the ultimate status symbol, it starts to look like a bargain.
I love it – oh my God!
