Hello everyone and welcome to newly fed, the show that's going to help you become more comfortable in your kitchen! I'm Raja and I'm Riki, and you might know us from our fantastic store Drama, her unbelievable column in Misha off the rack, or our family Table recipes. Some of you might also know us from our very own Simply Gmeat cookbook. And now, we're excited to share with you a new chapter in our culinary journey.
How Comfortable Are You in the Kitchen?
So, how comfortable are you in the kitchen? Do you feel like you're burning water, but can't quite get it right? Don't worry, that's where we come in! We're here to help you build your confidence and become a master chef. And what better way to start than with the humble egg? Yes, you read that right – the egg! It's a staple ingredient in many cuisines around the world, and yet, it can be intimidating for some of us.
Making the Perfect Soft-Boiled Egg
Okay, let's get started with making the perfect soft-boiled egg. What is a soft-boiled egg, you ask? Well, it's a type of egg that's cooked in boiling water for a shorter period than a hard-boiled egg. The result is an egg that's still runny and deliciously moist on the inside, while the outside is firm and slightly browned.
To make a perfect soft-boiled egg, you'll need to get your timing just right. And trust us, it's all about the timing! You see, if you cook an egg for too long, the whites will become overcooked and rubbery, while the yolks will be dry and tasteless. But if you cook it for just the right amount of time, the result is a perfectly cooked egg that's both runny and firm.
So, how do we achieve this perfect soft-boiled egg? It all starts with the right equipment. You'll need a pot of boiling water, an egg timer (or your trusty old watch), and a spoon or slotted spoon to gently remove the egg from the water.
Now, let's get started! Here's our step-by-step guide to making the perfect soft-boiled egg:
First, fill a pot with enough water to cover the eggs. Then, place the pot over high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil. Once the water is boiling, carefully place an egg into the pot.
Now, here's where things get interesting. You'll need to set a timer for exactly 6 minutes. Yes, you read that right – 6 whole minutes! This allows the egg to cook slowly and evenly, resulting in a perfectly cooked yolk and a firm white.
While the egg is cooking, prepare your water with the lid on. We like to call this step "the steamy stage." As the water heats up, it will start to release steam into the air. This is where the magic happens! The steam helps to cook the egg slowly and evenly, ensuring that the yolk stays runny and deliciously moist.
After 6 minutes have passed, carefully remove the egg from the pot using a spoon or slotted spoon. You'll know it's done when the whites are set and the yolks are still slightly soft to the touch.
Finally, transfer the egg to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. This is where the magic really happens! The cold water helps to set the yolk, while keeping the white firm and cooked through.
And there you have it – a perfectly cooked soft-boiled egg that's both runny and deliciously moist on the inside, while the outside is firm and slightly browned. I think these are the most beautiful eggs I've ever seen in a very long time!
