The Samsung Galaxy Tab S is an 8.4-inch tablet that offers decent volumes from its speaker system, although it lacks fullness of bass response, which is a common characteristic of tablet speakers today. The device's back side features Samsung's signature dimpled finish in platinum bronze color, and the white variant is also available.
On the front, the device boasts an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and snap resets, allowing for easy attachment of the book cover. The 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and RGB ambient light sensor are also present, which detect the color of lighting around you to adjust the display automatically for optimal image quality.
The Galaxy Tab S features an 8.4-inch display with a native resolution of 1600 x 2560 pixels and 360 ppi, significantly higher than the Google Nexus 7's display. Samsung's Super AMOLED display technology offers industry-leading color saturation and excellent viewing angles. Despite its larger high-resolution display, the device maintains a manageable footprint at just under 5 inches wide and 8.3 inches tall, weighing in at only 10.37 ounces.
The Galaxy Tab S runs on Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz interface, which offers some useful additional functionality without getting in the way. The device also supports multi-window mode, allowing users to split and resize the display between multiple applications using them simultaneously with small smartphone displays. Swiping to the left reveals a pre-configured home screen featuring Galaxy Essential Apps, including Galaxy Gifs and Library for Music and eBook content.
Samsung has packed the device with built-in Remote PC Desktop and File Manager capabilities, as well as peripheral device integration like Side Sync 3. Site Sync 3 allows users to share devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 or Note 3 smartphones on the tablet and even answer calls remotely. The Paper Garden app provides access to favorite magazine subscriptions, which is really nice.
The device's performance is solid, with only slight lag noticeable when it's still pulling in content over a network connection. In gaming, the Tab S holds up relatively well but can't quite keep pace with devices like the Adreno 330 graphics core found in Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processors or Nvidia's latest Tegra 4 or K1 offerings.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 with 16 GB of storage retails for $399, and the 10.5-inch variant again retails for $499.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi there it's dave altavilla for hot hardware and you are looking at the samsung galaxy tab s specifically this is the 8.4 inch version of the tablet though samsung also offers a 10 inch version of the tab s with the same exact specs except of course for the screen size the galaxy tab s is powered by samsung's own exynos 5 octa chip with a quad core arm cortex a15 and a quad core arm cortex a7 cpu engine so that's eight cores together for just the cpu block alone along with arms mali graphics core and that is backed by three gigabytes of system ram and 16 android 4.4 kitkat for its operating system and at an msrp of 399 for the 8.4 inch tablet and 4.99 for the 10.5 inch version of the tab s you also get a standard ac adapter and usb sync and charge cable but that's really about it for an additional 59.99 however you can pick up a custom magnetic book cover that does a nice job of doubling as a stand for the device as well incidentally that book cover snaps into two socket holes on the back of the tab s and it does take a good bit of force to snap that tablet into place however once it's mounted it's very secure and it does double as a very useful accessory again with that stand feature as well and of course it protects the tablet on the front bottom edge of the display is a mechanical home button as well as capacitive back and menu buttons the tab s is set up in portrait viewing mode with these buttons located on the bottom edge and also down here you'll find a usb sync and charge port a headphone jack and one of the tab s's stereo speakers samsung also brought back the fingerprint reader for the tab s as well on the right edge is the micro sd card slot and an ir blaster for universal remote control functionality via samsung's watch on app as well as the volume rocker and power button on the top edge you'll find the other speaker port and a mic port and the left edge is completely bare the speaker system on the tabas offers decent volumes by the way but as expected it lacks fullness of bass response which is pretty much typical for tablet speakers these days the back side of the galaxy tab s is sheathed in samsung's now signature dimpled finish and we're specifically looking at the platinum bronze color here the white is also available this finish type may or may not be around in future iterations of tablets and smartphones from samsung but for now it's here to stay with the tab s up top you can see the eight megapixel rear facing camera with led flash and here are the snap resets where the book ambient light and adjust the display automatically for the best looking image quality the galaxy tab s is an 8.4 inch tablet so it's significantly larger than the google nexus 7 you see here but also industry-leading color saturation and excellent viewing angles it's easily becoming a staff favorite here at hot hardware for both tablets and smartphones in fact the tab s might be the best 8 inch tablet display we've seen yet it's simply gorgeous despite this larger high resolution display the tab s maintains a very manageable footprint at just under 5 inches wide and 8.3 inches tall and just .26 inches thin and weighing in at only 10.37 ounces it certainly is a svelte little guy samsung has a lightly skinned android 4.4 kitkat again for the tab s and their touchwiz interface does offer some useful additional functionality without getting in the way at least that's our opinion though some may beg to differ there in addition samsung offers their usual multi-window mode that allows you to split and resize the display between multiple applications using them simultaneously with small smartphone displays this can have limited appeal but with an 8 inch or larger tablet display it can be a very useful feature swipe to the left and you are presented with a pre-configured home screen of galaxy essential apps galaxy gifs and the library for music and ebook content some of the functionality feeds off of google apps like the ebook reader but samsung's watch on app is located here as well allowing you to use the tab s as a big smart remote and media control hub for devices in your living room samsung also packs in built-in remote pc desktop and file manager capability with the tab s not seen here and lots of other peripheral device integration like side sync 3 for example site sync 3 gives you the ability to screen share devices like the samsung galaxy s4 and galaxy s5 or note 3 smartphones on the tablet and even answer calls remotely it's pretty impressive and works quite well the paper garden app allows you to get access to your favorite magazine subscriptions it's really nice and the interface for consuming your favorite rag on samsung's beautiful high-res super amoled display is impressive however again high definition video content is really where the tab s shines it is beautiful with hd video in terms of general performance the tab s feels very responsive with only the slightest bit of lag noticeable if the device is still pulling in content over a network connection one of the downsides of having all that screen real estate perhaps is its ability to render so much more on the screen and if network performance is lacking you can occasionally see a small hitch here and there while it's still pulling down content but it's nothing that's even close to a show stopper make no mistake performance with the galaxy tab s is solid in gaming performance the tab s holds up relatively well as well and can handle pretty much whatever you might throw at a device like this that's targeted for the tablet platform however the tab s's mali t628 graphics core can't quite keep the pace with the likes of say the adreno 330 graphics core found in qualcomm snapdragon 801 processors or perhaps versus nvidia's latest tegra 4 or k1 offerings but again it gets the job done just fine and shouldn't leave you for want on the gaming front the samsung
