**A Review of the Sonos Roam: A Portable Speaker that Exceeds Expectations**

When it comes to portable speakers, there are many options available on the market. However, not all of them live up to our expectations when it comes to sound quality and portability. The Sonos Roam is one such speaker that has left a lasting impression on this reviewer. With its compact design and ability to produce high-quality audio, it's no wonder why this speaker has become a favorite among music lovers.

**Portability is Key**

One of the standout features of the Sonos Roam is its portability. Weighing in at just 1.4 pounds, this speaker can be easily taken on the go without weighing us down. Whether you're going for a bike ride or taking a walk in the park, this speaker is the perfect companion. Its compact size makes it easy to toss into a backpack or purse, and its battery life of up to 11 hours ensures that we can listen to music all day long.

**Great Quality and Solid Bass**

When it comes to sound quality, the Sonos Roam delivers. With its high-quality drivers and Auto True Play tuning, this speaker is able to produce rich and detailed audio that's sure to impress even the most discerning listener. The bass response is also noteworthy, with a solid punch that adds depth and complexity to any music we play.

**A Great Addition to the Sonos Ecosystem**

One of the things that sets the Sonos Roam apart from other portable speakers is its ability to integrate seamlessly into our existing Sonos ecosystem. Whether we're listening to music at home or on the go, this speaker can easily connect with our other Sonos devices, allowing us to enjoy a unified audio experience throughout our home. The Roam also supports AirPlay and HomeKit, making it easy to control and stream music from our devices.

**Some Limitations**

While the Sonos Roam is an excellent portable speaker, there are some limitations to consider. For one thing, its size can make it feel a bit cramped when paired with other speakers, which may limit its sound quality. Additionally, while the Auto True Play tuning is impressive, it's not perfect, and we've occasionally noticed a slight dip in sound quality when transitioning between indoor and outdoor spaces.

**Recommendation**

So, do we fully recommend the Sonos Roam? The answer is yes, but with some caveats. If you're already invested in the Sonos ecosystem, this speaker is an excellent addition that will enhance your listening experience throughout your home. However, if you don't have any other Sonos devices, there are other portable speakers available at similar price points that may offer comparable sound quality and features.

**Conclusion**

In conclusion, the Sonos Roam is a fantastic portable speaker that exceeds our expectations in terms of sound quality and portability. Its compact design, impressive audio capabilities, and seamless integration with our existing Sonos ecosystem make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to upgrade their music listening experience on-the-go. While there are some limitations to consider, the Sonos Roam is definitely worth checking out if you're in the market for a new portable speaker.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is the sonos rome and it may be the best portable speaker that i've ever tried welcome everybody to apple insider it is andrew here and for the past couple weeks i've been using the sonos rome nearly daily and i've tested a ton of portable speakers like a lot a lot and while i can't confidently this is the best sounding portable speaker i've reviewed because you know what constitutes a portable speaker uh other than having a battery but it is probably one of the best if not the best i've tried if you have a sonos ecosystem already if you don't it's a little bit more of a tougher decision to make but let's go ahead and jump into this thing why it's such a awesome speaker and what kind of sets it apart from the other speakers on the market so the sonos roam comes in at 169 dollars it comes in both this white color and black like most other sono speakers do now it's very similar in a lot of ways to the move sonos is other portable speaker and one i've reviewed on this channel uh when that launched a year or two ago and the move is great but it's pretty darn hefty it's a big boy it is a big speaker and the rome is a whole lot more portable i mean look at this thing it's the size of a water bottle for the most part here like it's literally a tiny uh speaker that can go with you much more easily than you can before i've stuck this actually into the water bottle holder on my bike i throw this in the side pockets of my backpacks i've stuck this in cup holders in my car like this thing can go so many places without any fuss or muss it's also kind of cool is it it's meant to go in dual orientation so you can set it up just like this or it can go flat like this so i love that you can just go either way with it depending on where it's at so this is a lot more stable but i like kind of putting it this way when it's in the house it fits into a smaller spot when on the counter or a desk or something like that and still gives you the same great sound the portability comes with a lot of durability so the sonos move came with some water resistance but it was designed primarily for kind of dust and rain things like that so if you left it outside overnight you'd come out and your speaker would still be working in the morning yeah been there but this guy is even more resistant to the elements this thing can be dropped in water can be submerged up to a meter for 30 minutes and still come out playing on the other end it's pretty great now there are a lot of other rugged durable portable speakers on the market so it's not you know unique to the room but it is something great to have especially in something that is so small that's going in places that your larger sonos move or other bigger portable speakers can't go so the increased durability here pretty awesome now soon as it's done with a lot with the buttons and the controls here so the controls are here on the top there's a little microphone button which you can use to you know mute it or queue up a voice assistant if you google assistant or amazon alexa in here sorry no siri guys but then there's your audio controls for like the volume up and down and then the play and pause button so you can just tap on those buttons to go up and down for volume so tap tap to go a little bit up tap tap to go a little bit down but you can also hold them so hold them and it goes up really fast or down really fast so if it's really really loud you bring it inside and you start playing and super loud just hold that minus button and it'll quickly shoot down to the quiet end of the spectrum your plays pause buttons there in the center go ahead and tap that once to play or pause your music double tap it to go to the next song and triple tap it to go to the previous song pretty standard remote uh you know controls that people may be familiar with like on set of headphones or something like that just built in here i also love these are physical buttons not touch sensitive buttons it actually makes it really easy if i've got this in my backpack i can kind of reach back and i can press the buttons knowing what they are like i can feel the layout of them and i know which buttons are which a little bit it can still be a little bit funky but i can usually find like the minus button and i know to the right of that as the play pause so it's a little bit easier to control maybe that way because you're you have to look you just feel those buttons so using this a bit i've come to appreciate the physical buttons on these guys uh it also makes it just a little bit easier if it's wet or damp or anything without your fingers don't talk about those touch sensitive buttons as far as power goes this guy charges up over usbc there's a usb usbc port on the back plug this in with the included cable which is a 90 degree angle which works great for it this way or this way so you can kind of change the orientation around that works best for you but charge up over usbc you'll get 10 hours of battery life under normal usage i will say that i tried with google assistant for a little bit and it was like toasting my battery life uh sonos does say there's an update coming out that's gonna be a little bit smoother but right now my testing has been pretty crummy using google assistant on here like all the time on battery life so i'd recommend keeping that on if you're going to put on like a charger but other than that google system was a little bit hit or miss fortunately i don't use alexa or google assistant so neither was a problem for me because i just disabled them after i was done testing but something to keep in mind uh and watch out for that coming software update to kind of fix some of those issues uh but anyway yeah so 10 hours battery life under normal use that concludes over wi-fi and this thing charges via qi as well which is super cool so if you have a cheat charger home i've got like you know my large uh nomad power station pro there on my desk i'm gonna set this on there anywhere i want and it'll charge so it kind of keeps it charged up that way uh and sonos does sell a optional base for like 50 bucks it's triangle shaped just like the the rome is and you set it on there and it's kind of a docking station this is actually a sticking point for me is i kind of feel like that documentation should be included and to me that space speaks more to like the design of the product and what its intended use is for so the sonos move came out and actually had a little ring-like docking station that stayed on your counter and it really was supposed to be kind of a signal that the sonos move was meant to be both that indoor speaker you know to replace like a one or even maybe a s5 or something play five but it's meant to be like in your home as a room speaker but you could also pick it up and carry it with you this guy doesn't include one out of the box and even some of the features that we're gonna talk about like the sonos swap feature really seem to indicate this is more for use on the go as it should be it's called the rome um and not as much for use in the house so they don't kind of emphasize that docking that docking station a lot i think if this was meant to be more like a a constant use in home speaker they would have included that from the get-go so it bothered me a little bit that they're charging an extra 50 bucks for that docking station but again any qi charger should work that you've got around your house um moving on so audio quality with this guy and how you can get the audio so first up it works over wifi and bluetooth you can use the sonos app to control it so any way that you're playing music on your existing sonos system is going to work here so through the sonos app which i can tie into title or even apple music and play that way it works really really well it streams directly you know over wi-fi no issues there at all even was able to control this guy through my brilliant smart wall panels which have a sonos integration which is pretty cool to see that happen so all your normal sonar stuff over wi-fi it can automatically switch to bluetooth as you head out so you head out of your house wi-fi is gone switch it over to bluetooth or streaming that way just like you would with any other bluetooth speaker wi-fi is still great though because it works like anywhere around your house so i can take this out on the porch or out in the backyard on our patio and i'm still getting wi-fi signal strength so i'm able to still stream with this over um you know wi-fi through that sonos app or even better through airplay 2. so anyone using the apple devices you guys know what airplay 2 is but it's basically that wi-fi streaming from any apps on your phone that support airplay so anything in there any audio from your phone that's you know using airplay even if you're watching a video you can use that and stream that to this guy without having to use bluetooth so it's effortless to set up and control that way and it even works with the home app and automation kind of via home kit so i can go ahead and set an automation like my favorite one is to automatically stop playing whenever we leave the house so i can actually set this up to start playing and then if we shoot out here really quick or whatever i don't have to bother pausing my speaker because i set up an automation inside of the home app it's automatically do a pause my sonos roam whenever i leave so that's a really like little handy thing there but instead of any other masons like if there's an nfc tag you could tap your phone on an nfc tag on your desk set that up to an automation that'll go ahead and play your work playlist to the sonos roam when you do it so you can walk in boom start that automation up it'll start playing a playlist if you want so there's a lot of cool stuff you can do with airplay 2 and home kit that you can do with any airplay 2 enabled speakers so i i really do love that it uses airplay 2 and i don't know of any other uh really almost any speakers that support airplay 2 on a battery so of course the sonos move does and that was one of the biggest selling points for me but it was at that 400 price point so coming in at sub 200 for a battery powered airplay 2 speaker that i can control via siri on my device and through homekit is an incredible selling point for the sonos roam at least for us in the home kit and smart home space and the apple ecosystem the kind that i got sidetracked there going back to audio quality i was very impressed with how good this sounded uh not just because i mean it's a sono speaker so i really did expect some pretty stellar audio quality but just for its size it's very rich and full if we're in a bigger space i do wish i had them move more often like there's a couple times around our backyard and like a little bit more juice a little bit more a little bit more volume here a little more bass more punch uh and that's where the sonos move comes in but again it's more than twice the price point of this guy and this is so much more portable so when we're going places that i want the portability this is beyond perfect this is the one of the best sounding speakers i could get for this size and i'm super happy with that but anytime you have a speaker that's this size there are times that you're going to want a little more a little more volume a little more punch and you're just going to have to jump up to a larger more expensive speaker so as long as you're okay with the volume that you're going to get from a speaker of the size which again is above average it's great quality great volume and solid bass there's just times when it's more open you want a bigger speaker so for those times there is a bigger more expensive speaker that sonos offers but for the portability this really you you can't beat it for what it is so i'm i'm super happy with how this thing sounds uh and the volume that this thing puts out there's just a lot of detail in it it's still a sono speaker and that is that's clearly apparent as you listen to us i was very happy with this thing sounded uh sometimes just one just a little bit more a little more and that's where you need a bigger speaker so as i keep saying this is really tend to be a portable speaker one that is part of a larger sonos ecosystem so you take this thing out with you you're on a bike ride you've got this in a cup holder you're listening to music or you're on a walk or something and this is in a pocket or a backpack or maybe just in your backyard you're sitting a table you're listening to music and then you come inside you have to deal with that switching between this guy and your sonos system or your interior speaker something like that uh they they're not using this or intending to be used as like your main speaker system in your house so you can hold down the play pause button and it's actually going to go ahead and jump from here to your sonos system which is pretty cool so it'll actually identify the closest speaker and it'll jump the audio from here to your other sonos speaker so whether that is you know your arc in your living room your beam in the bedroom uh you got some sonos ones around like whatever other sono stuff you've got inside your house you jump the audio from here to those bigger better sounding speakers so it's really meant to take this on the go you come home you swap this little guy for your home system you can also group this with other speakers so first up you can set up a stereo pair of these guys that's entirely possible or you can just group this and play multi-room audio via airplay 2 or the sonos app so you've got lots of different options for playing music on this on your other system or everything together so do i fully recommend the sonos roam honestly i do but i think it's an easier decision if you have a bunch of other sonos speakers if you have other sonos speakers this is ideal i mean it supports airplay and homekit it easily can be grouped with other sonos speakers and you can jump audio between this and the other sono speakers that you have that is such a big selling point aside from the fantastic sonos audio quality on the go as well as battery life and resistance and everything else that this thing has going for it so i think if you are in that sonos ecosystem you're entrenched there this makes sense this is a great addition and ad to expand your sonos system if on the other hand you don't have any other sonos speakers this is a little harder to justify there are other speakers in this to 200 dollar price point that can sound just as good and have a bunch of other features uh and it doesn't have the sonos name so there are other options that are going to be very similar to what this can do i mean the auto true play tuning is pretty cool i mean if i'm going from like a corner to an open space i can hear a difference in how the audio is being tuned it definitely makes a difference with this guy and very few speakers can do that but i don't know that's worth it compared to speakers that can hit a 99 to 150 price point maybe i would maybe lean towards those if i've got no other sonos options available but i do a lot of sonos speakers and this guy is great so if you guys want to pick one up these guys are coming out now go ahead and find the link down below in the description let me know what you think on twitter andrew underscore osu is this everything that you wanted from a sonos you know portable speaker more portable than the move let me know and i'll check you guys in the next video you\n"
