RIP CPU + Motherboard - R9 3900X & 5700 XT Overclock Stream Recap

The Challenges of Overclocking: A Streamer's Experience with AMD Cards

As a streamer, I have always been fascinated by the world of overclocking and pushing the limits of what is possible with computer hardware. Recently, I had the opportunity to try my hand at overclocking an AMD card, but unfortunately, it was a frustrating experience that highlighted just how difficult this process can be.

From the very beginning, I knew that overclocking would require a lot more testing than I initially thought. We were trying to set some values and get the card working, but it was a hit-or-miss situation. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't. This was particularly frustrating because we had experienced a "good period" at the beginning where everything seemed to be going smoothly, but as soon as we tried to push the voltage beyond a certain point, the card just wouldn't cooperate.

I have to admit that I never thought hard modding would be the easier way to go about things. In fact, dealing with the software and vendors has always been a major pain point for me. Many of them seem to put blocks in place to prevent overclocking, making it difficult for enthusiasts like myself to push their hardware to its limits. The lack of friendliness from some of these companies is particularly frustrating, as they often make it clear that they are not supportive of overclocking.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was with the AMD card's software. It seemed to have a mind of its own and would either work perfectly or fail miserably at certain points. Uninstalling and reinstalling power play tables became an all-too-frequent occurrence, taking up valuable time that could have been spent on more productive tasks. This is just one example of the frustration that comes with dealing with overclocking software.

I also experimented with using different drivers, hoping to find a solution to the problem. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to make much of a difference. Sometimes using an older driver would resolve the issue, while other times it would just create new problems. It's always a gamble when trying to update drivers, and I'm not sure what the right approach is.

In one notable instance, I was able to successfully push the card to a high graphics score, but this was largely due to increasing the memory voltage rather than actually overclocking the GPU itself. This highlights just how often the issue comes down to tweaking individual components rather than pushing the entire system to its limits.

Despite the challenges, I must say that the experience has been enlightening. It's clear that overclocking is not for the faint of heart and requires a tremendous amount of patience, dedication, and expertise. I'm looking forward to experimenting with other hardware and exploring new techniques in the future.

In fact, I have a few projects lined up that will allow me to put my newfound knowledge to the test. One of these involves power modding, which I've had mixed results with in the past. I'm excited to see if I can overcome some of the issues that have plagued me and achieve the desired results.

Another project on the horizon is a hard modded card, which will allow me to explore the limits of what's possible with AMD hardware. This is an area where I've had limited experience in the past, but I'm eager to learn more about how to push these cards to their limits.

Overall, my experience with overclocking has been a valuable one, teaching me just how complex and nuanced this process can be. While it may not have yielded the results I was hoping for, I'm excited to continue exploring the world of computer hardware and pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eneveryone so we just got done with our two live streams Jojo and Domini Joe from bearded hardware he'll be linked below and we did it liquid nitrogen on just 3900 X for day one and then liquid nitrogen on the 3900 accent 5700 k xt for f it's so hard k for day two so we're gonna recap those for you and get through some of the scoring and frequency stuff like that and some of the mishaps along the way before that this video is brought to you by e BJ's a new audio sound card engineered by audio note e BJ CEO knows high quality audio and has begun bringing sound cards back the new audio sound card is capable of delivering hair-raising audio superior to onboard sound the card includes a line in headphone line out and Mike in and a Sony Philips digital interface new audio also leverages EVGA specie bead design experience has upgradeable op amps and uses AKM premium components for its DAC and a DC learn more at the link in the description below alright so first of all we had that other video that's pretty funny actually of the stream prep setup where yeah that video so that took hours stream prep always takes hours not just stream prepping overclocking cuz you're setting up for not only like insulated everything which doesn't take that long but then also pre testing yeah it's more of the base settings I'm trying to get all the base settings so and I didn't really have much time to do it beforehand so yeah so we spent a long time on the pre testing Joe did all that stuff and unfortunately the CPU and the motherboard both that we did the pre tested on you can get a shot of this maybe unfortunately the CPU and the motherboard casualties yes of war uh-huh so that's the CPU I don't know how well you can see it but there's bent pins in there and there's also missing pins in there and Joe do you want to explain yes so we always use this special cleaner all the time you'll see it on my channel and yeah so I was just cleaning making it look pretty like you know me yeah but I ended up turning it over and when I went to spray it like this was a brand new candidate that's what we did high pressure when it be honest like I would sprayed the whole top of it like the where the blue is now basically just sprayed it and the it was soaked so when I turned around I went like this basically the CPU went flying about a foot that way and went to land it on the concrete and basically yeah my heart sunk yeah yep so we were supposed to only use Joe's motherboard and CPU I pulled out one of these for mine and the motherboard your motherboard died as well I don't you were thinking that it's maybe because you were like fluctuating the temperatures oh yeah if you watch this dream we talked about basically I have clocks and temperature wise and how it affects temperature when you go really cold so I was testing that but going all the way down to like minus 170 a hundreds 180 degrees Celsius then I would have to heat up to pretty much zero degrees and just a constant cold heat cold heat I probably did it maybe like 30 sometimes like we were you know it was this wasn't during this none of this was during the street yeah no no this was all stream prep so yeah that was like just hours of non-stop he called stress yeah I was a little rusty with it I haven't done some of the AMD stuff in a while I've been concentrating on other things so I wanted to make sure that and we had a proper stream on doing certain things so yeah and then the the stream itself actually went pretty well so we did set up live during the stream which was really fun everyone got to see the configuration this board hadn't been tested for Allen T before I pulled it from my stock and did Vaseline merging board yeah all that stuff and then the the scoring wasn't too bad either so for scoring you ended up with the CPUs at let's see 5.2 was the final frequency 5.2 gigahertz it might have been a 5 3 run in there but it was mr. Devin's yeah we we started having some weird cold issues and I didn't really want to risk your I think it I think you could do more but I was I was putting some pressure on J like we can't kill this chip I need it for reviews and times very sensitive about yeah so we stopped up 5 - I know that chip can do 5 3 because I've done it but it's not stable and everything when I've done it yeah so it doesn't really count but 5 - 1 point 6 volts core and then f o'clock we had to bend down to 1467 which anyone who's familiar with rising you're gonna know like wow that's really low why'd you do that so do you wanna just one more I know we explained in the stream like a hundred times but one more yeah I guess weird definitely so we were trying to explain basically I have the biggest bang for the buck on the Rison platform is benching that are looking at the Infinity fabric and overclocking it properly so you want to stay on a one-to-one really ratio and basically we found a sweet spot of about 1900 on F o'clock and 1900 on mem which is technically 3800 RM because the way DDR works later rate you just double it so it's technically 19 under it is half of 30 a talking mega transfers per second versus megahertz - yeah yeah so that's the sweet spot but unfortunately with cold it doesn't work yeah I mean it's great for any water or air users and probably I would say dice too but when you go when with liquid nitrogen we you only get a em deed really needs cores or needs cold with the cores yes so it doesn't really scale well so you need to try to get like full pot temperatures so you want to you need at least like - 150 - 160 and when you're doing the if' at at 1900 basically it will only let you get to about minus 90 so by bumping it up what pretty much killed the board probably last night was going in testing 1900 then dropping it down one divider then trying to go cold again and then doing it again and do it I basically did it like too many times so I think the board just didn't like it after a while but yes 1467 on that and then the final score is just for reference again we did Cinebench r15 and we did times by cpu and so the scoring r15 we didn't add till we got to 4.5 gigahertz so a 4.5 the score was 35 21 for all core and to get what that actually means at 5.2 gigahertz so an increase of 700 megahertz it was 40 31 and that's going to give you a percent increase of about 15% which is really not ahead like that's pretty damn good time to spy CPU reflects the score less aggressively so twelve thousand five hundred eighty was our score there and that increased versus let's say four point nine a let's do let's do four point four yeah do the one where we didn't we were just kept at the F o'clock yeah okay so first of all 5.2 versus four point four it was five point three percent so a lot less than Cinebench and then also F o'clock so you want to do oh yeah I should mention that so you know we did a test with F o'clock at 1900 that was one of you talking about memory at 3800 megahertz and timings the same for all of it frequency for point now just just for bait it didn't matter it was just for comparison yeah and so that score was twelve thousand fifteen then all you did was drop down F o'clock to what it needs to be for the bench yeah and it was quite amazing that basically we scored the same so if we we dropped the F o'clock from 1900 to fourteen sixty seven when we ran it at a 1900 at four gig it scored the same as the F clock at 14 67 at four five yes number five by gaining five hundred megahertz was that what it took to even out the the I F clock yeah it just shows right there that I have clock is the sweet spot right there it's crazy yeah I mean just it just think if we could really get that i F clock with the temperatures and cold manda a.m. do you'd be setting some records yeah and you know really good spot so those were the the settings we ended up stopping at five - it's better than my last livestream that I did without your help other than calling you in the middle I stopped at 4 9 5 o ish but basically for 9 I've got I pushed that two five two five three separately for a different set of tests but they weren't as abusive as these so this is the highest frequency we've gotten on a test that are this abusive oh it's also chip dependent - it is chip dependent yeah board it's a god-like board 3900 X you've got Trident II Royals that you said you you basically custom Bend yep geez skill yeah but you can get away since it's AMD you could basically get away these are it would be the equivalent of a 4800 pin on geez okay so like if you want to try to get something at home not like pre bit like the 4800 is really good series even the 4000 series for AMD would be awesome hmm yeah and then a simple knock to a fan just get the Ellen to vapours away I think that I courser a X 1600 I've which is way overkill for what we're doing here but yeah Amy doesn't use that much better no seven Anna meter yeah yeah so that's the stream that gives you some frequency numbers idea of scaling and the biggest takeaway here if you're like I don't care about any of this I don't get it why Alan - if you want to feel like you learned something the biggest one is that infinity fabric frequency really matters oh my gosh cuz again to reiterate what Joe just said but just to make sure it really sticks with people going from 1900 megahertz F o'clock everything else the same and 3,800 mm down to 14 67 29:34 mem is a drop in score from twelve thousand fifteen to 11 thousand 457 then to regain that you're at four five core and also Megan's yeah and also 28 irate f o'clock we're dropping because you can't you can't do it higher frequencies cold otherwise but yeah so out of box if you want to learn something for home you have changed the try getting infinity fabric to 1900 if he can you're not gonna see as big again as from 1467 to 1900 but if you can keep it in stuff with memory yeah and get it to 1900 the trick is that one no one rate ratio yes that's where the the main performance is and and to be honest I'm not totally sure if it's it if it's a CPU issue or a board issue about the trying to get 1900 so on this board this particular boards the MSI x5 70 God like the the Meg basically every I guess I've tried to boards and four CPUs and they evolved then 1900s though what makes me think it's more of a board issue cuz I've heard some maybe unlike the crosshair where enable they could only get like 1700s okay 1600 and I know that might be just a buggy bios or something I have 70 master we did okay we got nineteen hundred but yeah so that's gigabyte board right yeah cuz I actually saw hi cookie benching that and he was hopeful to get 1902 yeah so that's the stream otherwise you missed out on a lot of really good explanation so because we start-to-finish set up there was a lot of talking about not just like obviously stream interaction with chat but we really did spend some time on explaining yeah some of the BIOS settings like what kind of and some of that stuff actually can go to other boards and stuff like and you can apply it outside of Allens you scenarios yeah just know I definitely don't copy our numbers for non Allen tear like that'll be bad but yeah think before you try to sit yeah but at least ill understand where Joe's doing so so if you want to watch that part of the stream the most probably useful part for you as a Rison owner would be right after we finished setup and right when you got into BIOS the first couple times so there's gonna be a 30 minute period in there where Joe's going through every setting and explaining most of them while you're changing it yeah and that'd be a good part to watch so ok so for day two what we did was you can see actually the Allen teapot the towel around it is completely soaked right now like it's I mean you could probably squeeze it and get water to come out of it yeah it's a mess so it didn't go as well even as the previous time I did this with a different version of more power tool yeah now I'm wondering if more power tool the LNT version has issues or if it's something completely unrelated maybe like we're just setting numbers that are not really supported that well yeah I think maybe it just requires a lot more testing I think yeah I think because we were trying to set some values and then it would work sometimes and then it would wouldn't work other time yeah unfortunately like half so there was a really good period and there right sort of at the beginning when we got it working did some runs yeah that one pretty well but as soon as we tried to push the voltage beyond like one point for a yeah downhill from there yeah and it's just really kind of disappointing how the AMD card behaves with this stuff cuz I think like you said that really the way to solve this as hard modding yeah and I've never in my life thought that hard modding would be the easier way to go about things but I think if you especially if you already know how to do it you know it's way easier than dealing with that software that's a lot of the times what we have to deal with because a lot of the vendors even like Nvidia they always put blocks in there to kind of fight you off on the side anymore yeah and videos not particularly friendly to all there already yeah unfriendly now yeah I to be honest AMD should hit that point and actually that's why I keep telling them they don't do it they did the opposite and they restricted the 5704 product segmentation it seems like they're going back yeah yeah and at a time when the community of overclockers were like the only people buying the vega cards for a while when they were really expensive but anyway yeah the unfortunately like half of the overclocking process with that thing like probably if you tallied up all the times we had to ddu and uninstall power play tables and reinstall power play tables there's probably like an hour to an hour and a half of the stream was that yeah basically uninstalling it happened sometimes I mean that's overclocking yeah so it takes a lot of patience the previous version seems to work a little better but I don't know that it's it's like an issue with the software as it was programmed I think it's probably an issue with the software interacting with a and these drivers and I don't know that there's a fixed great fix for that also it could have been a driver too we're using the same driver we were using I've tried the newest one and then I last time I had the most success was you know a month ago so it's probably slightly older drivers so yeah maybe that could be actually because I mean that's just what drivers in general sometimes they fix the things and break other things yeah he always have to maybe or intentionally block things that's not that could be completely crazy either yeah sometimes you got to go to an older driver because it's more accepting I guess yeah so anyway five points you get your Hertz on the CPU for day one and then for the GPU or stuck at like 24 50 ish megahertz no it was around where I was last time and the thing Joe was able to successfully do that I couldn't was get married at 9:25 that was by increasing memory voltage to about 1.4 1.5 I think yeah which we would probably could explore a little bit further but to be honest we had some too many issues that maybe that's something to do later yeah yeah no at this point it's like okay well this card's not cooperating so well to call it on this one but for what it's worth you did manage to get one of the higher graphics score the highest one out of the ones listed on hardware bot which doesn't say much because some of those yeah aren't really that impressive and then mine was like ten six eight seven previously you were ten five something with the new driver and the new more powerful five eighty or something which was a really good score compared to what we saw the whole rest of the time yeah it's like I soon I guess it could be the luck of the stream too yeah sometimes that things just break right before yeah right so that's it for this one thank you for watching and we'll try and do more streams with overclocking stuff in short order hopefully I don't know maybe next time we can do something with the power modded card and bring up our hard modded card yeah and I gotta grow them out too because that seems like there's there's a lot of issues so it's probably gonna take a while to really go through and figure out the card yes I have one just for that method so that's definitely gonna be within the time frame er with yeah and sometime next yeah next couple months or something oh maybe when that 3950 comes out or something that'd be a good time yeah yeah so subscribe for more you can subscribe to Joe at bearded hardware or click the link in the description and thank you for watching we'll see you all next timeeveryone so we just got done with our two live streams Jojo and Domini Joe from bearded hardware he'll be linked below and we did it liquid nitrogen on just 3900 X for day one and then liquid nitrogen on the 3900 accent 5700 k xt for f it's so hard k for day two so we're gonna recap those for you and get through some of the scoring and frequency stuff like that and some of the mishaps along the way before that this video is brought to you by e BJ's a new audio sound card engineered by audio note e BJ CEO knows high quality audio and has begun bringing sound cards back the new audio sound card is capable of delivering hair-raising audio superior to onboard sound the card includes a line in headphone line out and Mike in and a Sony Philips digital interface new audio also leverages EVGA specie bead design experience has upgradeable op amps and uses AKM premium components for its DAC and a DC learn more at the link in the description below alright so first of all we had that other video that's pretty funny actually of the stream prep setup where yeah that video so that took hours stream prep always takes hours not just stream prepping overclocking cuz you're setting up for not only like insulated everything which doesn't take that long but then also pre testing yeah it's more of the base settings I'm trying to get all the base settings so and I didn't really have much time to do it beforehand so yeah so we spent a long time on the pre testing Joe did all that stuff and unfortunately the CPU and the motherboard both that we did the pre tested on you can get a shot of this maybe unfortunately the CPU and the motherboard casualties yes of war uh-huh so that's the CPU I don't know how well you can see it but there's bent pins in there and there's also missing pins in there and Joe do you want to explain yes so we always use this special cleaner all the time you'll see it on my channel and yeah so I was just cleaning making it look pretty like you know me yeah but I ended up turning it over and when I went to spray it like this was a brand new candidate that's what we did high pressure when it be honest like I would sprayed the whole top of it like the where the blue is now basically just sprayed it and the it was soaked so when I turned around I went like this basically the CPU went flying about a foot that way and went to land it on the concrete and basically yeah my heart sunk yeah yep so we were supposed to only use Joe's motherboard and CPU I pulled out one of these for mine and the motherboard your motherboard died as well I don't you were thinking that it's maybe because you were like fluctuating the temperatures oh yeah if you watch this dream we talked about basically I have clocks and temperature wise and how it affects temperature when you go really cold so I was testing that but going all the way down to like minus 170 a hundreds 180 degrees Celsius then I would have to heat up to pretty much zero degrees and just a constant cold heat cold heat I probably did it maybe like 30 sometimes like we were you know it was this wasn't during this none of this was during the street yeah no no this was all stream prep so yeah that was like just hours of non-stop he called stress yeah I was a little rusty with it I haven't done some of the AMD stuff in a while I've been concentrating on other things so I wanted to make sure that and we had a proper stream on doing certain things so yeah and then the the stream itself actually went pretty well so we did set up live during the stream which was really fun everyone got to see the configuration this board hadn't been tested for Allen T before I pulled it from my stock and did Vaseline merging board yeah all that stuff and then the the scoring wasn't too bad either so for scoring you ended up with the CPUs at let's see 5.2 was the final frequency 5.2 gigahertz it might have been a 5 3 run in there but it was mr. Devin's yeah we we started having some weird cold issues and I didn't really want to risk your I think it I think you could do more but I was I was putting some pressure on J like we can't kill this seems like they're going back yeah yeah and at a time when the community of overclockers were like the only people buying the vega cards for a while when they were really expensive but anyway yeah the unfortunately like half of the overclocking process with that thing like probably if you tallied up all the times we had to ddu and uninstall power play tables and reinstall power play tables there's probably like an hour to an hour and a half of the stream was that yeah basically uninstalling it happened sometimes I mean that's overclocking yeah so it takes a lot of patience the previous version seems to work a little better but I don't know that it's it's like an issue with the software as it was programmed I think it's probably an issue with the software interacting with a and these drivers and I don't know that there's a fixed great fix for that also it could have been a driver too we're using the same driver we were using I've tried the newest one and then I last time I had the most success was you know a month ago so it's probably slightly older drivers so yeah maybe that could be actually because I mean that's just what drivers in general sometimes they fix the things and break other things yeah he always have to maybe or intentionally block things that's not that could be completely crazy either yeah sometimes you got to go to an older driver because it's more accepting I guess yeah so anyway five points you get your Hertz on the CPU for day one and then for the GPU or stuck at like 24 50 ish megahertz no it was around where I was last time and the thing Joe was able to successfully do that I couldn't was get married at 9:25 that was by increasing memory voltage to about 1.4 1.5 I think yeah which we would probably could explore a little bit further but to be honest we had some too many issues that maybe that's something to do later yeah yeah no at this point it's like okay well this card's not cooperating so well to call it on this one but for what it's worth you did manage to get one of the higher graphics score the highest one out of the ones listed on hardware bot which doesn't say much because some of those yeah aren't really that impressive and then mine was like ten six eight seven previously you were ten five something with the new driver and the new more powerful five eighty or something which was a really good score compared to what we saw the whole rest of the time yeah it's like I soon I guess it could be the luck of the stream too yeah sometimes that things just break right before yeah right so that's it for this one thank you for watching and we'll try and do more streams with overclocking stuff in short order hopefully I don't know maybe next time we can do something with the power modded card and bring up our hard modded card yeah and I gotta grow them out too because that seems like there's there's a lot of issues so it's probably gonna take a while to really go through and figure out the card yes I have one just for that method so that's definitely gonna be within the time frame er with yeah and sometime next yeah next couple months or something oh maybe when that 3950 comes out or something that'd be a good time yeah yeah so subscribe for more you can subscribe to Joe at bearded hardware or click the link in the description and thank you for watching we'll see you all next time\n"
