The Genesis Coupe: A Game-Changer from Hyundai
When Hyundai first introduced The Genesis sedan, no one expected such a competitive large luxury sedan from the Korean automaker. However, their bold move was quickly followed by the introduction of The Genesis Coupe, which further solidified their position in the market. But what about a coupe version of The Genesis sedan? Let's face it, most Hyundais aren't exactly known for their fun-to-drive dynamics.
Fortunately, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a different story altogether. The steering on this car is incredibly accurate and well-weighted, making it a blast to drive in emergency situations. It's very capable and confident, going through our avoidance maneuver with flying colors. However, when the stability control was engaged, it became less impressive, shutting down the power as soon as the tail or front end started to slide. This is great for avoiding accidents in emergency situations, but not ideal for taking the car to a closed track where performance driving is the focus.
Fortunately, this limitation can be overcome by disabling the stability control and letting the car breathe. When done so, the Genesis Coupe truly shines, balancing power and handling with ease. You can slide the tail out if you want, go into a four-wheel drift if you prefer, and enjoy the thrill of driving a well-balanced sports car. The 3.8L V6 engine is plenty of torque and power, sounding great and delivering similar performance to some V8s. Additionally, a turbocharged four-cylinder is also available.
We equipped our test car with a six-speed manual transmission, which had its share of quirks. The gates were a bit notchy, making it difficult to match the revs, especially between first and second gear. This made driving smoothly less than ideal. However, this limitation didn't detract from the overall driving experience.
Another area where the Genesis Coupe doesn't quite excel is in terms of ride quality. It's very stiff and busy even on highways, which may disappoint those expecting a more comfortable cruising experience. On the other hand, the interior is really nicely detailed inside, with simple and intuitive controls that make navigation a breeze. There's plenty of room in the front, with supportive and comfortable seats that complete the driving package.
Unfortunately, the rear seat has barely enough room for even the smallest children, which may be a drawback for families or those who plan to use the car frequently for passengers. Despite this, The Genesis Coupe defies expectations in many ways, offering a great value proposition as a well-equipped rear drive coupe with over 300 horsepower and under $30,000.
In conclusion, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a game-changer from the Korean automaker, offering a unique blend of performance driving capabilities and everyday usability. While it may not excel in every area, its strengths make up for its weaknesses, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a fun-to-drive coupe with impressive performance credentials.
