The Importance of Balance in Life: A Story of Motorsport and Fitness
I trained us to keep fit in general, I trained for my motorsport, alright, lucky that I've got two hobbies that I enjoy equally. So, I love riding a bike and I love driving the car, particularly on track today, I'm with Phil and Phil Hinds who's my old teammate from the team sprint in London. Taking it steady, good for a nice ride through the lanes and maybe blow up to the reservoir, have a little bit of claim up there.
You still ride my bike whenever you can and I can get on track in the car fairly regularly. But, yeah, this in this sort of environment, you can't be going out for a spin on two wheels in a car on a track. You have to focus so hard on the here and now at that moment of the next brick and plane to turn in point. The affects every single thing, you lose focus for one second, you'll be off the track. So, the reason that that is amazing is because, the end of a track session, you realize you haven't thought about anything other than racing a car.
For me, almost the opposite on the bike, where I can drift off and think about other things. It was never a risk of falling asleep at them, even though it's you know, you're racing through the night. You have to be so aware at every single moment that there's never a bit when you're switching off mentally, being completely by yourself on top of a mountain or top of the hill. Like this, just I don't know. It helps me get clarity and it's as if there's a great feeling at the end of a raid, getting things in perspective.
And that's what I think is so important, not just about physical capabilities, but also mental and strengths and capabilities of an individual. Because success in sport obviously comes down to both. But, it teaches you so much about life. It taught me about how to win, but how to lose. It taught me about hard work, it's not about perseverance but also that it doesn't always work out. You know, not everybody can be the gold medalist or be the champion.
I always feel better after being out in the bike, it's just almost like a bit of me time. I mean, when you're driving a car, it's very different. It's so specific and it's about here and now. But, in contrast, on the bike, you can drift off and think about other things. And that's what makes it so special for me.
It's also taught me that sometimes, you just have to let go and enjoy the ride. Not always thinking about the next move or the next challenge. Just being present in the moment, enjoying the feeling of freedom and exhilaration that comes with riding a bike on a track. It's a rush like no other, one that I feel grateful for every time I get to experience it.
So, for me, the importance of balance in life is clear. You need both physical activity and mental clarity to succeed and live a happy life. And, for me, my bike and motorsport have provided that balance. They've given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I don't think I would find anywhere else.
