manufacturers are trying to push on you and it is a pro and a con and mostly a pro let's take a look at the door panels and the dash there are three different color palettes you have black and hard plastic you have matte textures you have this light gray and then you have this matte blue metallic across the door and the dashboard in certain light it looks amazing and the the huge thing about this is something you're going to use every day there is almost no use of shiny black plastic so that means this is going to hold up really well in all the areas that you're interacting with here it is a treat and it's one of the reasons why i really enjoy driving this the steering wheel controls the hvac controls the shifter the turn signals everything is standard car stuff that you can get out of 20 different brands and get in here and you know exactly how everything works the gauge cluster is digital it's dumbed down so much that it's got the bare basics that you need it's easily readable in any light the infotainment is simple they use proximity sensors when you bring your hands up it brings up some menus there's a lot of thought to usability in human design something that some car companies are starting to get away from in favor of way blowing the tech part out of just out of proportion so seating and here you know you're there's a combination cloth vinyl and obviously there's different trim levels so you can opt for different seats adjustability is great the back seat headroom and legroom is pretty good if you have the forward seat or the seats forward in the front and the cargo space really surprised me with the hatch up you can fit three enormous worldwide travel bags and a few other things with the seats down with a little bit of room to spare so i think as much as this is a smaller cutesy stylish suv cuv thing it does work very well for your everyday commute now the last thing to talk about is there are some things that feel cheap in here and yes there's hard plastics in every car but you look at the the the knobs buttons and switches they seem just very budget very just not a lot of thought given to them and when you get into something like a rav4 where you have these huge knobs with rubberized coating you can grab them there's this sense of satisfaction and clicking stuff this doesn't have that here and i would say that's about the only thing that i would complain about other than the audio system and this is starting to plague vw in the lower end products on even some of their other end ones it it really does it sounds like a bluetooth audio speaker times three or four it's just it's not clear you can look at the audiographs if you're somebody that loves listening to music this is gonna be a downer for you but let's get into the shop where jack's going to tell you everything about the mechanical part in the shop with the volkswagen house this is vw's new compact suv and for the north american market this vehicle is built in puebla mexico the taos is on mqb or at least a variant of it called mqba1 which is reserved for compact suvs so what does that mean well mqb is volkswagen audi group's global architecture and what you get for those cars is a strut front suspension in this vehicle's case you have steel lower control arms a sack stamper an aluminum knuckle and a steel subframe in the rear you get two different options depending whether or not you have a front wheel drive equipped car or a four motion equipped car the four motion cars get a multi-link rear end and in this car's case you have a torsion beam and again both those vehicles have a steel rear subframe something i will point out is when you compare this to something like a jeep compass there seems to be a far greater attention to detail to things like aero panels and nvh noise reduction panels which should make for a more pleasant driving experience when it comes to the drivetrain you have one engine option for north america it is a 1.5 liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine it's good for 158 horsepower 184 foot-pounds of torque now you have two gearboxes here you have an eight speed azen automatic for the front wheel drive equipped cars and you have a seven speed dual clutch for the four motion vehicles now four motion is a front wheel drive based all-wheel drive system so with that let's hit the road and pick up mark jack the vw this is an affordable one i'm kind of excited by this yes it's the taos mark and it's not a chevy trax you're kidding i know it's real disappointing let's see how it gets off the line and then we'll talk turkey right here it comes mark oh well let's talk about the acceleration first so i think one of the things i think about is how you're actually going to use this in everyday driving at least out by us in the rural areas where you're constantly having to sneak out on one lane or two lane roads in front of oncoming traffic through stop signs my big problem is this car has so much lag and delay even with stability control yeah it doesn't matter there's like a two second delay before this car makes any power and it's literally like you're driving a lawnmower from that that basically 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm there is nothing happening and then the boost comes on and accelerates so i actively have to mentally plan when i'm going to make a move in this and you have to be way more patient with it and i think that's something if you're somebody that needs that instant acceleration this car does not have it as a counterpoint though when you're when you are moving and this car does have some rpm it is not horrible to accelerate in no it's not it's once you're going and once you're in normal cruising and driving there's a lot of torque so much torque that if you're in the wet and i was in the what the other day this thing will spin the tires for three miles straight it literally cannot put down any power to the wheels and that all that torque comes on and it's just you have to drive this calmly reg like a regular person if you if you have a lead foot you're going to be annoyed by this driving experience let me restate this though this is the front wheel drive variant correct they do have a four motion vehicle it is the same motor different gearbox we have the azin 8-speed that's in this thing and tell me about the gearbox what do you think i think it's sc as a front-wheel drive car i feel like i would probably buy something else yeah and and i talked a lot about this in the interior space a lot of why you're getting this is the cargo capacity and the interior space the way that it feels the way that it looks the polish that you get you get the sense of polish in the overall driving experience and i talk about this with a lot of cheaper cars you realize its deficiencies when you drive it past what they engineered it for if you drive past like that 60 percent it starts to get really messy if you're driving it like a normal person on a regular highway and a traffic grind this is a very enjoyable suv or car experience but let's get into the final thoughts jack and we'll kind of hammer down the pros and the cons all right mark final thoughts on the vw chaos yes an suv a day keeps the doctor away keeps the blood pressure low and you're going to keep seeing this and this is yet another example of that the question is does this stand out any more than some of the competition and that's going to be up to you because this is a very personal choice when you get into something like this for me i love the fact that the interior it's great i i mean honestly i think it it does a good job it doesn't gear hunt it it seems to always be in the right gear when you mash the throttle you need to pass kicks down in a reasonable amount of time i feel like this car is really refined overall for its price point and the driving characteristics are all good when you're out on the highway it's not a busy ride so the steering is not hypersensitive where you're going to be darting all over the place you can sit in here the seating position is good the visibility is good i think as a daily driver if you get over some of those deficiencies we talked about you're going to like driving this if you like being more sterile i don't even mean sterile in a bad way like a refined approach that most vw products are you'll really like this thing i think my only real complaint is i feel like at the price point that it's at so this one is an sc it has some options and it's 31 000 which is a lot you were saying this is 31 000 and i feel like if you're looking for a front-wheel drive box yeah the kia soul makes more sense to me but once you add all-wheel drive to this you get the four motion and one of the best gear boxes the 7-speed dual clutch this starts to make a lot more sense to me yeah so i'm just going to put it this way i think ride quality is a little bit above average even with a torsion beam in the rear end it's it's average quiet i mean it's it doesn't have a ton of road noise the the overall refinement of the driving experience all the things put together is what it does well if you're gonna go off the road there if you're in an adverse climate you get in a lot of snow you get in wet conditions a lot you instantly have to go to all-wheel drive because this thing gets real messy it's softly sprung it washes the front and out everywhere if you're in the wet and you try to accelerate and turn this thing is going off the road the tires aren't the best so if you're in a dry hot climate all the time you can get away with front-wheel drive um so i'm gonna put that out there yeah this is definitely a car that is probably very very competitive once you move up the price range to the formotion setup you get all the bells and whistles you get the the beats audio system you get the lighting gimmicks which makes this a very compelling interior and space to be in but at this lower price point as an sc as a front-wheel drive car i feel like i would probably buy something else yeah and and i talked a lot about this in the interior space a lot of why you're getting this is the cargo capacity and the interior space the way that it feels the way that it looks the polish that you get you get the sense of polish in the overall driving experience and i talk about this with a lot of cheaper cars you realize its deficiencies when you drive it past what they engineered it for if you drive past like that 60 percent it starts to get really messy if you're driving it like a normal person on a regular highway and a traffic grind this is a very enjoyable suv or car experience but let's get into the final thoughts jack and we'll kind of hammer down the pros and the cons all right mark final thoughts on the vw chaos yes an suv a day keeps the doctor away keeps the blood pressure low and you're going to keep seeing this and this is yet another example of that the question is does this stand out any more than some of the competition and that's going to be up to you because this is a very personal choice when you get into something like this for me i love the fact that the interior is clean yes it's a bit boring but it is 100 functional everything that you need to do with something you're stuck on the road with or stuck in traffic it does well with the exception of the audio system being poor now the takeaways are again as we talked about in the drive you're going to need a all-wheel drive on this if you're in any adverse climate it's just kind of a messy driving experience but i'm pretty much going to leave it at that this is definitely an enjoyable car but there is a lot of competition would you choose this over something like a rav4 crv hrv cx-30 i mean i could go on and on for another 10 minutes and i i feel like this finds a middle ground between the japanese brands the korean brands and definitely the american brands and you feel like this is well
