### The iPad vs. MacBook Air Debate: Why the iPad Isn't Dying
#### Introduction
In a recent video, the claim was made that the iPad is "dying" when compared to the M2 MacBook Air. However, as someone who disagrees with this assertion, I want to dive into the details and explain why the iPad is not only alive but thriving in its own right.
#### The False Choice Between iPad and MacBook
One of the key arguments presented in the video is that the $1,999 12.9-inch iPad Pro does not offer enough value for money compared to the $1,999 13-inch MacBook Air. The reasoning given is that purchasing an iPad requires additional accessories like a keyboard or stylus, which can increase the overall cost.
However, this line of thinking sets up a false choice between two entirely different devices. An iPad is not a laptop and should never be expected to perform like one. Instead, it's a modular device designed for flexibility. Unlike the MacBook, which remains a fixed device, the iPad can be transformed into a productivity tool with added accessories or used as a standalone tablet.
#### The Misconception of Functionality
Another claim made in the video is that the iPad lacks functionality compared to the Mac. This perspective often stems from subjective expectations rather than an understanding of what the iPad was designed to do. For instance, while the MacBook may be more suitable for traditional productivity tasks like word processing or spreadsheeting, the iPad excels in creative work with tools like the Apple Pencil and apps like Procreate.
The video also criticized the idea of using an iPad without a keyboard, suggesting that such usage is impractical. However, this ignores the diverse range of users who rely on iPads for tasks like digital art, note-taking, and brainstorming—uses where a keyboard would be unnecessary or even counterproductive.
#### The Evolution of iPad Software
Contrary to the video's claim that Apple has ignored the iPad since 2018, significant software advancements have been made. Features like Stage Manager, Scribble, Hover, and universal control have enhanced productivity on iPads. These updates allow users to multitask effectively and integrate their iPad into a workflow with external monitors.
The introduction of Pro apps for iPad and improvements in compatibility further demonstrate that the iPad is not stagnating. While it may not match the Mac in every way, it continues to evolve incrementally, focusing on its core strengths as a tablet.
#### The Subjective Nature of User Experience
Much of the debate comes down to personal preference and familiarity. Users who are accustomed to macOS often find switching to iPadOS jarring due to differences in interface and functionality. Conversely, younger users who grew up with iPads may find transitioning to Macs challenging.
This subjective experience highlights why comparing the two devices directly is flawed. Each serves a different purpose and caters to distinct user needs. The beauty of Apple's ecosystem lies in offering choice—letting consumers decide which device suits their lifestyle best.
#### Conclusion
The video's assertion that the iPad is dying overlooks its unique strengths and appeal. While it may not rival the MacBook Air at every point, the iPad Pro remains a powerful tool for creative professionals and casual users alike. Its modular design allows for versatility, and its software continues to evolve in ways that enhance productivity.
Ultimately, the choice between an iPad and a Mac should not be framed as a competition but rather as options within a robust ecosystem. The iPad's value lies in its ability to adapt to different user needs, making it a viable choice for those who appreciate its form factor and functionality.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthe second you expect an iPad to be a Mac and not a tablet you've already set yourself up for disappointment because literally the only way to make somebody like that happy is to turn the iPad into the Mac but we already have the Mac so then there' be no point in having an iPad in the lineup in the first place hey it's Chris saw a video the other day that said the iPad is dying I have some thoughts nothing against the person who made the video I just disagree let's just jump right into it one of the claims in the video is that the iPad Pro versus the M2 MacBook Air doesn't offer enough value for the money and the example put on the table is that you could compare a $1,99 13in MacBook Air and a $1,99 12.9in iPad Pro but that on the iPad side of things you're not going to get enough value for the money because you have to also buy accessories with the iPad so it's not worth it the first thing that I want to point out is that an iPad is not a Macbook they're different one is a tablet with a touchcreen and one is a laptop one is modular and can transform On Demand by adding or taking away accessories and the other just is the way that it is right out of the box forever and one important distinction to note is that the iPad Pro can actually become more mac like if you add a keyboard for instance but the same is not true in reverse the MacBook is not going to become more iPad like in any way shape or form because it can't you're never going to be able to rip the keyboard off of the Mac or use a stylus with it it's just not going to happen these are very different machines even though yeah obviously there's some similarities so obviously you can and this person did compare the specs and the price on the M2 MacBook Air versus the iPad Pro but that's not the only way to look at things maybe not even the most useful way to look at things because each device ends up appealing to different use cases and even customers so I feel like the framing sort of sets up a false choice for customers where you either have to get one or the other now it's true a lot of people are going to be like here's how much money I have to spend I got to pick pick one or the other but there are other people out there who are going to say you know what it's not either or I would like to have both I can make use of both I think both are going to be better together or maybe I'll start with one and add the other one in later or down the road now if it was really comparing Apples to Apples so to speak then you would be comparing a Mac and a Mac or an iPad and an iPad because again they are different devices and I want to point out if price Was No Object for a potential customer you would have plenty of people who would pick the iPad Pro because of its form factor and because of what it does that the Mac doesn't regardless of the price because they like the device for what it is not what somebody else thinks that it should be now the video mentions that you'd be hardpressed to find somebody who would use a bare iPad without any accessories but there are plenty of artists out there who actually would end up using this with probably the apple pencil and not a keyboard right they're not buying it for or the keyboard they're buying it because it's a tablet with a touchcreen they can use a stylus on and again we don't want to get into a false dichotomy where you can only get the iPad with no accessories or a full-blown setup right that's the beauty of the iPad actually is that you can mix and match its modular you can make it into the machine that you want it to be and if it's not the machine that you want it to be then Apple gives you an option it's called the mac and if you would rather have the Mac you can get the Mac so certainly Tech reviewers on YouTube are opinionated people I have lots of opinions and I'm going to have some opinions about these devices of course other people are entitled to their opinions of course but it does highlight I think that video the subjective nature of opinions a lot of the videos seem to me to be somebody saying well I can't imagine anyone doing this or I wouldn't use this or I don't get this but obviously because there's an ibad Market there are other people out there who don't think the same way ultimately we as consumers vote with our wallet and if something comes out we either vote with our dollars and buy it or we don't and apple sees that data in Aggregate and you do see products come on the market that don't stay very long but then there's others that obviously have lots of potential and staying power and we see them year after year after year speaking of potential before we get any further want to let you know if you want to reach your full potential or your devices full potential check out my productivity course called learning to be productive it's going to help you get more done and less time in the Apple ecosystem with say it with me less burnout it's on sale right now check out the link to see how much you can get it for it's a great deal now one claim that the video makes that I just flat out disagree with is that Apple has been ignoring the iPad lineup they've just been neglecting it since 2018 which was in this person's view the last time that any meaningful change hit the iPad lineup with the 2018 iPad Pro now before I mention some changes that I feel like are worth mentioning that have happened since 2018 let me first just say that change for the sake of change is stupid you don't want something to change if it's already been basically perfected if it's it's in really good shape to change it would actually be bad just to say it's different it's new I feel like the iPad Pro is kind of the Pinnacle of what a tablet design Canon should be today and still remain somewhat affordable right I know a lot of people complain about the price but it's an affordable luxury like most Apple products think about the iPhone 15 Pro Max for instance Apple's Pinnacle of the iPhone right it doesn't look a whole lot different and doesn't even function a whole lot different than iPhones from several Generations ago because Apple really dialed in that design and look at that it keeps selling on the market that turns out to be what customers of Apple are after I feel like the iPad Pro in particular the iPad lineup is kind of in the same boat it's sort of reached its Pinnacle and any Improvement that's going to come is going to be more incremental it's not the kind of thing where you meant to buy it every single year even people on the iPhone side of things buy an iPhone every 3.3 years on average shouldn't be any different on the iPad you're not looking to go out and buy a brand brand new iPad every single year at least most customers aren't so if the iPad is a tablet and it's a great tablet at that in terms of the form factor it's fair to expect some little enhancements to that form factor over time until something that's worth changing up about the structure of the thing actually comes down the line how do you improve a giant touchcreen and make it even better well sure you change things like the screen technology you add in something like OLED yeah that's a nice little enhancement but do you make it foldable just for the sake of making it fold well no that's not obvious at all in fact interestingly the person who made the video I think pointed out that they haven't upgraded from their 2018 iPad Pro they're still using it they've got some it looks like newer models to test to review but they haven't upgraded their personal one and if that's the case I would say isn't that a bonus that you can still have a 2018 iPad Pro that's relevant in 2023 five years later you didn't have to upgrade before that and needlessly spend additional money in order to have a relevant setup I think that could very much be viewed as a good thing for people especially if we're talking about budgets and getting value for your money to not have to go out and spend $1,500 every year or every other year to keep up with the Joneses to be able to say hey my 2018 is still hanging in there and doing a great job that's pretty cool actually now I want to point out something that I pointed out in the past which is when it comes to this discussion of iPad versus MacBook a lot of this hinges on expectations so if you grew up and are most familiar with using the mac and Mac OS then going and using something else like the iPad and iPad OS is going to seem less familiar similar by Design but not the same because again they aren't the same device familiar enough that you can use it but yet a little bit foreign at the same time and because you're not so familiar with it you're not as used to it then your initial reaction is going to be like well this isn't as good but the same thing applies in Reverse if you're somebody who's younger and this happens a lot these days and you started with the iPad you're an iPad first computer user and then you switch over to using the Mac well guess what that seems a little bit foreign and it's not quite the same and maybe that seems a little weird to you so expectations and what you're familiar with that plays a big part in this whole discussion but here we come to the Crux of this whole thing the second you expect an iPad to be a Mac and not a tablet you've already set yourself up for disappointment because literally the only way to make somebody like that happy is to turn the iPad into the Mac but we already have the Mac so then there'd be no point in having an iPad in the lineup in the first place so that's the beauty of it if you like the Mac the Mac is there you can get a Mac right and if you like the iPad that's there for you too you can get an iPad or as we've already talked about you could get them both combine forces and have an ultimate sort of setup and that really is the thing here you can do whatever works best for you now let me read off a list of some of the notable things that have changed at least on the software side of things since 2018 number one we've gotten scribble we've gotten hover we've got home screen widgets now those didn't exist a couple years ago and by the way you can now move those and position those wherever you want that's a brand new change see these things keep changing a little bit over time we've got quick notes I really love quick notes we've got universal control that's a big one stage manager that's a big one promotion we've got Pro apps like Final Cut Pro and logic and other Pro apps from other non-apple companies and we've got external monitor support these are not small changes and I actually want to follow that up with a bit of my own personal experience here this is where some of the subjectivity comes in on my part but the addition of stage manager and external monitor support in particular combined with Pro ABS means that I can now do all of my work personally me and I know everyone's workflow is different on an iPad if I so choose now I don't so choose I like to use my Mac and my iPad but I could get away with doing all my work on an iPad and that's not something that I used to be able to say even recently right so that's a pretty big deal especially external monitor support that really opened up a whole new world because it used to be that adding a monitor was like the main accessory that you could add to this that you couldn't over here even though you had other accessories like the apple pencil and the magic keyboard that you could add like an external monitor was the accessory that just belonged to the Mac well those days are over now personally is universal control the ability to use one set of keyboard and mouse to control both the iPad and the Mac just like the biggest deal in the world that it really changed things up for me didn't really like blow the doors off of what I could do in terms of my work but it did streamline my setup at my desk it's really nice I use it all the time and I actually love it it's one of those things I wouldn't want to be without now that I've had it but for me personally I'll just say there are some tasks that I prefer doing on the Mac and there's some other tasks that I prefer doing on the iPad so it's nice to be able to have the option for instance I'll give an example I much prefer using using free form and doing brainstorming and notetaking on the iPad right using the apple pencil that's just kind of the visual sort of person that I am I like to write things out by hand diagram draw I like the dragging and the dropping and all that that's really great so I like to do that on the iPad but at the same time I still like to do my video editing over on the Mac like I just prefer that version of Final Cut Pro even though I can use the iPad version I like the iPad version right it's usable it's just different and I'm used to using the Mac version that's really what it comes down to for me mostly I know it's going to get better over time now I have to point out something that I found a little bit bizarre in the other video and that is that the person said if it ain't broke don't fix it and then proceeded to say that the Mac has sort of worked the same way in terms of multitasking in particular for something like 40 years but at the same time we're going to slam the iPad for not really changing too much for just 5 years since 2018 right so I feel like there's a little bit of a double standard kind of going on there and also that particular video really seems seem to harp on the multitasking experience on the iPad and what I'll say about that is I personally cuz this is all subjective their version is subjective my version is subjective I personally have really liked stage manager on the iPad at first it wasn't amazing and then Apple listened to some of the feedback and made some refinements and I really like how it works right now I like to use it with my external monitor the studio display and get a ton of work done is it perfect no would people like to see that 4 app limit disappear well yeah I mean there's some improvements that can still be made people would like to see some improvements to the file app still on the iPad yeah and I think that we'll probably see those improvements coming and as Apple continues to refine things uh down the road and by the way the Mac has been around for a lot longer and has been refined for a lot longer the iPad is newer and it hasn't had as much time to get refined that's all happening kind of in real time so I don't personally hate stage manager like a lot of people seem to and in the video the person was actually comparing multitasking on the Mac with some of the older multitasking features on the iPad things like just split screen support and the slide over feature you know now that we have stage manager on both actually devices I didn't feel like that was 100% fair either you know like I can click on this and it opens I can click on this and it opens they're both right there and I can switch back well yeah you can do that on the iPad too it works slightly different it's not the same and I don't think it should be exactly the same because then we would have a Mac and a Mac not a Mac and an iPad the iPad is different should act differently and I think the target audience for the iPad is and what Apple's trying to do for them is to make things really simple where you don't have to overthink it and it kind of just falls into place for you and simultaneously the people that are used to working you know with the mac and having a little bit more control over things they don't like that and that's okay if you find that the iPad doesn't really appeal to you then you don't have to use it that's the beauty of having options also in the video it was mentioned that you know even if Tim Cook were to walk in and say how do I fix the iPad they were like well I don't know I don't even know what you could do and I think that's kind of telling because I think that the iPad itself is sort of the thing that doesn't need to be fixed they've kind of refined what it means to be a really great iPad that's what we have with the iPad Pro so long story short I didn't actually find anything in the video that pointed to iPads dying I didn't see that at all you know somebody's subjective feelings don't mean that the iPad is dying price differences between two different products doesn't mean that thep I ad is dying the fact that they are two different products one is a Mac and one is an iPad that doesn't mean that the iPad is dying the fact that one can use accessories and transform and is modular and can be somewhat more mac like if you want it to be but doesn't have to be that doesn't mean that the iPad's dying I feel like it was really a video that ended up pointing out that the iPad has gotten so good especially the iPad Pro that it doesn't need all that much to change to still be an amazing tablet but it's still never going to be an amazing Mac it is an iPad it's a different thing categorically that feels familiar necessarily so that's a feature not a bug the feeling similar without being identical because if you're using one Apple device it makes sense to kind of speak a similar language you know with the operating system so that you can use them make use of them but yet because of the difference in form factor and functionality they are going to and should work differently I'm not somebody who's saying bring Mac OS over to the iPad I've never said that and I don't want to see it I'll just say too there was one part of the video where it was claimed that the iPad is less functional the operating system than mac and Mac OS well less functional to who again it depends on the sort of user the use case the type of work that's being done in many ways iPad OS and the iPad itself is more functional than the mac and the Mac can be more functional than the iPad obviously especially when we're talking about certain apps or just horsepower but so many people in their minds just think to themselves the Mac was there first the iPad came second therefore it's an alsoo ran and they're always comparing the iPad to the Mac side of things especially the MacBook and really never think about it the other way around you can't use an apple pencil and draw on the Mac screen you can't take the keyboard off on your Mac and use just the screen etc etc etc you can't shoot edit and publish a video entirely from just one device without having to sync a bunch of files or anything that's something that you can do over here that you can't do on the Mac so I just wanted to put that out there because I saw the other video floating around and if somebody's going out and doing some research before they make a purchase it's nice to have a few different views uh to consider before you pull the trigger and by the way I appreciate the other person's views you know it's good to have that perspective out there and hopefully everyone thinks it's good to have this other counter perspective as well basically I'm just glad that there are options for you as a consumer you can do whatever works best for you that's the main thing you know if there was no iPad and we literally just had different versions of Max laying around you would have less choice and it wouldn't be quite as robust of an ecosystem I think we can all agree about that all right that's it for today's video I hope that you check out the course if you haven't already now's a good time because of that sale check it out using the link down below we have a newsletter if you're not signed up for that you really should be if you consider yourself an Apple fan also don't forget we got a lot of stuff going up on X formally Twitter x.com dailytech dailytekk I post stuff on there you know that doesn't even make it into videos just fun stuff useful stuff lists of things so check it out I'll catch you in the next video laterthe second you expect an iPad to be a Mac and not a tablet you've already set yourself up for disappointment because literally the only for you now let me read off a list of some of the notable things that have changed at least on the software side of things since 2018 number one we've gotten scribble we've gotten hover we've got home much prefer using using free form and doing brainstorming and notetaking on the iPad right using the apple pencil that's just kind of the visual sort of person that I am I like to write things out by hand diagram draw I like the dragging and the dropping and all that that's really great so I like to do that on the iPad but at the same time I still like to do my video editing over on the Mac like I just prefer that version of Final Cut Pro even though I can use the iPad version I like the iPad version right it's usable it's just different and I'm used to using the Mac version that's really what it comes down to for me mostly I know it's going to get better over time now I have to point out something that I found a little bit bizarre in the other video and that is that the person said if it ain't broke don't fix it and then proceeded to say that the Mac has sort of worked the same way in terms of multitasking in particular for something like 40 years but at the same time we're going to slam the iPad for not really changing too much for just 5 years since 2018 right so I feel like there's a little bit of a double standard kind of going on there and also that particular video really seems seem to harp on the multitasking experience on the iPad and what I'll say about that is I personally cuz this is all subjective their version is subjective my version is subjective I personally have really liked stage manager on the iPad at first it wasn't amazing and then Apple listened to some of the feedback and made some refinements and I really like how it works right now I like to use it with my external monitor the studio display and get a ton of work done is it perfect no would people like to see that 4 app limit disappear well yeah I mean there's some improvements that can still be made people would like to see some improvements to the file app still on the iPad yeah and I think that we'll probably see those improvements coming and as Apple continues to refine things uh down the road and by the way the Mac has been around for a lot longer and has been refined for a lot longer the iPad is newer and it hasn't had as much time to get refined that's all happening kind of in real time so I don't personally hate stage manager like a lot of people seem to and in the video the person was actually comparing multitasking on the Mac with some of the older multitasking features on the iPad things like just split screen support and the slide over feature you know now that we have stage manager on both actually devices I didn't feel like that was 100% fair either you know like I can click on this and it opens I can click on this and it opens they're both right there and I can switch back well yeah you can do that on the iPad too it works slightly different it's not the same and I don't think it should be exactly the same because then we would have a Mac and a Mac not a Mac and an iPad the iPad is different should act differently and I think the target audience for the iPad is and what Apple's trying to do for them is to make things really simple where you don't have to overthink it and it kind of just falls into place for you and simultaneously the people that are used to working you know with the mac and having a little bit more control over things they don't like that and that's okay if you find that the iPad doesn't really appeal to you then you don't have to use it that's the beauty of having options also in the video it was mentioned that you know even if Tim Cook were to walk in and say how do I fix the iPad they were like well I don't know I don't even know what you could do and I think that's kind of telling because I think that the iPad itself is sort of the thing that doesn't need to be fixed they've kind of refined what it means to be a really great iPad that's what we have with the iPad Pro so long story short I didn't actually find anything in the video that pointed to iPads dying I didn't see that at all you know somebody's subjective feelings don't mean that the iPad is dying price differences between two different products doesn't mean that thep I ad is dying the fact that they are two different products one is a Mac and one is an iPad that doesn't mean that the iPad is dying the fact that one can use accessories and transform and is modular and can be somewhat more mac like if you want it to be but doesn't have to be that doesn't mean that the iPad's dying I feel like it was really a video that ended up pointing out that the iPad has gotten so good especially the iPad Pro that it doesn't need all that much to change to still be an amazing tablet but it's still never going to be an amazing Mac it is an iPad it's a different thing categorically that feels familiar necessarily so that's a feature not a bug the feeling similar without being identical because if you're using one Apple device it makes sense to kind of speak a similar language you know with the operating system so that you can use them make use of them but yet because of the difference in form factor and functionality they are going to and should work differently I'm not somebody who's saying bring Mac OS over to the iPad I've never said that and I don't want to see it I'll just say too there was one part of the video where it was claimed that the iPad is less functional the operating system than mac and Mac OS well less functional to who again it depends on the sort of user the use case the type of work that's being done in many ways iPad OS and the iPad itself is more functional than the mac and the Mac can be more functional than the iPad obviously especially when we're talking about certain apps or just horsepower but so many people in their minds just think to themselves the Mac was there first the iPad came second therefore it's an alsoo ran and they're always comparing the iPad to the Mac side of things especially the MacBook and really never think about it the other way around you can't use an apple pencil and draw on the Mac screen you can't take the keyboard off on your Mac and use just the screen etc etc etc you can't shoot edit and publish a video entirely from just one device without having to sync a bunch of files or anything that's something that you can do over here that you can't do on the Mac so I just wanted to put that out there because I saw the other video floating around and if somebody's going out and doing some research before they make a purchase it's nice to have a few different views uh to consider before you pull the trigger and by the way I appreciate the other person's views you know it's good to have that perspective out there and hopefully everyone thinks it's good to have this other counter perspective as well basically I'm just glad that there are options for you as a consumer you can do whatever works best for you that's the main thing you know if there was no iPad and we literally just had different versions of Max laying around you would have less choice and it wouldn't be quite as robust of an ecosystem I think we can all agree about that all right that's it for today's video I hope that you check out the course if you haven't
