I REPLACED my $1000 Wifi....
**Upgrading My WiFi Network**
I recently had the opportunity to upgrade my WiFi network, and I must say, it's been a game-changer. The new interface is fantastic, and I've found that the speeds are significantly improved over my old setup. While I did experience some slower uplink speeds in certain areas, it wasn't cripplingly slow by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, when I'm close to the access points, the speeds are both up and down, far exceeding what I was getting with my old network.
One of my goals was to have WiFi way out in the street in front of my house so that I can browse the internet without using mobile data while my kids are playing. To achieve this, I needed to extend the wireless range even further than just outside my house. I wanted to be able to get a strong signal all the way down the street and into my neighbor's yard. After some experimentation, I found that the new network was able to pick up patterns like a pro, and it was no problem at all.
To put this newfound power to use, I spent some time testing the limits of my WiFi network. I started by setting up clients in my attic and running them through various tests to ensure everything was behaving as it should. Once I had confirmed that everything was working properly, I decided to take my test equipment outside and see just how far I could push the signal.
The results were impressive. Even when I was standing on the boundary of my neighbor's yard across the entire cul-de-sac, I still got a strong 100 megabit signal. As I walked down the street, I found that I could maintain this speed all the way to another half-cul-de-sac away, even though I was well over 50 meters from my front door. This is an impressive feat, especially considering the size of my yard.
However, it's worth noting that I did experience some issues with mobility further out in the distance. At one point, I found myself at over 100 meters from my front door and still only getting 50 megabit on WiFi. It was like having an "epic WiFi emergency" – the signal just died. But overall, I'm thrilled with how this new network has performed.
**Squarespace: The Perfect Website Platform**
As I continued to test out my new WiFi network, I couldn't help but think about how it would be used. Specifically, I wanted to have a way to share files and browse the internet without using mobile data when I'm outside. To make this happen, I'll need to set up some additional infrastructure, including a few access points and some wired connections.
But before I can start building out my network, I need a solid foundation – a website that will serve as the hub of my online presence. This is where Squarespace comes in. I've been using Squarespace for a while now, but even so, I still find myself getting frustrated with its limitations. That's why I'm excited to share this video and announce that it's going to be sponsored by Squarespace.
Squarespace offers award-winning templates that will help make your website stand out instead of looking like it's from the 90s. But what really sets it apart is its built-in tools for tracking website performance, managing content, and even selling products through its own platform. Plus, if you need help, Squarespace has a top-notch support team available 24/7 via live chat and email.
So why wait? Head on over to squarespace.com/LTT and save 10% on your first purchase. And if you've enjoyed this video, maybe you'd like to check out some of my other work, including the infamous six-workstation, no wait, whole house one CPU where I had a server machine in my closet and ran fiber optic wires all over the house – they're all still there, and I have plans for them in the future.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- There's something about growing a beardthat just makes you wannapick up a power tool andmeasuring tape and, you know, upgrade your home WiFi.Yeah, as it turns outthe beard really doesn't change much.I'm still me.And me hasn't upgradedthe wireless access pointsin my upstairs hallway for five years.I mean, that kind of makes sense.I did spend $1,000 on it withthe intention of it beingmy end game wireless networking solutionand it does still deliverover 40 megabytes persecond to nearby clients. But, it also has next tonothing in the way of management featuresbecause I didn't buythe controller hardwareand poor reception in bothmy back and front yard.Time to fix that up in a hurry.Wish me luck.Segueing to our sponsor Honey.Go to join honey.com right music)Step number oneis to sort through allthis gear from Ubiquity. Some of it, is for a future videoupgrading my home security setup.Make sure you're subscribedso you don't miss that. And some of it is forthe WiFi upgrade today. This right here is the BaseStation XG.This is an outdoor rated access point, that is freaking nuts. It's got this shape becauseit's kind of more ofa directional style WiFi access point, but I did not expectthe size, or the weight. It's got weatherresistant plugs down here.So that one's Gigabitand this one is 10 Gig?Kind of speeds are they expectingyou to get on this thing? What are they expectingyou to put this on?Look at this.Oh, I know what this is.This is their powersplitter, doodad thing. So you put one AC input here, and then they've got thisspecial power connector for the, like rack mount devices so youcan power everything off ofone power port. This we're gonna need today,24 ports of Ubiquity Powerover Ethernet goodness. So we've got a couple of10 Gig SFP plus ports. So we can use that to goback to the main switchand then the rest of themare regular Gigabit Power over Ethernet. So that'll handle our WiFi access pointsand the new security cameras. The Unified dream machinepro, this thing is super cool. It's kind of like an all in one unit, but not in a bad way.So it's your router,it's your security gateway,it also has, check this out,a three and a half inchdrive for video recordingso it handles all of your security stuffand you can use it as your cloud key.So you don't need a dedicated VMor a little dedicated donglein order to run and manageall of your Ubiquity hardware. This is what they've madesuch bold claims about. This is the UAP XG,but they say is the world'smost powerful access point. And they've gotcomparative numbers rightup on their website, comparing two devicesfrom brands like Ruckusthat I know from my experienceoffer amazing WiFi performance. Now this is not WiFi six.Ubiquity actually has not jumpedinto the WiFi six game yet. But, given that we don't actuallyhave any WiFi six devices in the housesince I'm back on my Note Nine again,I'm not too worried about that now.I am more interested injust having somethingthat's easy to manage and hasabsolutely flawless coverageover my entire property.More 10 Gig inputs, dang! One of the big problems I haveis operating my smart garage doorfrom the end of my driveway andwell naturally, as soon as I go to demothat it's not working very well,I actually get a pretty solid resultat the end of the driveway here. Now we'll see how thenew one does, I guess. The funny thing about this upgrade is thatafter my first experience runningUbiquity products at home,I swore I would never use them here again. It was that notorious square access pointthat they had a number of years ago, that I had as many as threeof, installed in my houseand I still couldn't get decent coverage. This thing, with it'sanywhere from 200 to 300to even 400 megabit per second performanceall across my house, was like a breath of fresh air.Of course, I've always believed thatwhen you're choosing a product, you should choose the multi product, not the brand name.So especially in light ofthe excellent experienceswe've had with Ubiquitygear at the office,I'm giving them another shot here. They acknowledge that thatsquare AP was terrible.Oh! 10 Gig, like what? There, apparently Ubiquityhas a mobile app fora quick and dirtyprovisioning of a single AP.But, since I'm gonna wannabe setting this up properlyin the longer term anyway,I'm gonna go ahead anddo the rack installs now.Big old POE switch up nextand now the dream machine.Man, I just realizedthere's that 10 Gig porton the access point, but the only 10 Gigs on the POE switchare actually SFP plus,I can't even use them.Honestly Gigabit is probably finewith the number of clients we have here.I doubt we'd max it out anyway.I will definitely need a 10 Gig linkbetween this one and this one though, but I don't have thecable here for that nowso I will deal with it later. Now it's time to make a couple cables.I need to go from my ISP provided modemover to the WAN port on my router here. And I also need to go frommy router to my switch. We're gonna go from the 10 Gig switch. This is just temporary, cause we'll put it ina different way later. And then we'll go from therouter over to the main switch.Eventually, I'm gonnawant a 10 Gig connectionbetween my POE switchhere and my 10 Gig switchand I'll just run that from likehere to here or something like that. But, what I won'tprobably need to 10 Gig iseither the LAN port although technically,I think this thing doesn'tsupport SFP plus port.No point though. So, I'm not gonna bother with LAN.I'm not gonna bother going10 Gig from here to here.So I just need to make myself a cablethat goes from there to,I don't know, let's say, there. Before anyone brings it up,I am aware that generally you'dprefer stranded compared toa solid core cable for anapplication like this but, this was all we had lying around in Cat6aand it's just for me,so I know not to bend it around a bunchcause that's thedisadvantage of solid coreis you can fatigue the metaland it can crack and breakinside the cable.Good luck everybody.Well, now wonderful. When to put the kids to bed andboom internet connected, dream machine is connected.Sweet, this is a reallyslick startup wizard.Lttstore.com, man, they havea nice interface these days.99 percent experience. This is a sweet featurebeing able to do a quickscan of the RF environment.Obviously there's other ways to do it.There's phone apps.I had my old Channelizer Wispydoodad way back in the dayso I could even see thingsthat weren't WiFi devices buthaving it just right in here, this easy to use, is pretty great. This is great information.Channel one is pretty much wide open.So that'll be a perfect spot toplunk my 2.4 Gigahertz SSID on.I only really use it forlike random old devicesthat don't support five Gigahertzespecially now that I'mmaking this upgrade.I should have awesome wireless coverage. This is a visualizationof data transmissionsthat are going on acrossthese frequencies.Hallway, check that outall my stuff's up in here.I remember how to do it now.Once you've createdyour wireless networks, you just have to go into each radio. So here we've got our 2.4 Gigahertzand then our two five Gigahertz radios. And then we have to disable. There we go.There we go.And there we go.Now it's time for a quick speed test.Let's just see how we're doing here.Bear in mind, of course,I'm just down the hallfrom it though, real nice. You can't tell because it's darkbut we're back at the tree now.All right, so that's betterthan one of my results but, quite a lot lower thanone of the other ones.In this corner of the house,is a lot stronger than before.Looks like the living roomis as good or better as well,at least on the download.Well, I'm thrilled, coverage is as good as what I had before. The interface is fantastic. This is actually gotten like so goodsince last time I'velooked at it in detail. And while I did have sloweruplink speeds in some places,it was not cripplingly slowby any stretch of the imagination. And it's more than made up forby the fact that when I amclose to the access pointspeeds are both up and down, way in excess of what I wasgetting with my old one. We're talking just about16 megabytes per secondsustained on a modern client. That's freaking awesome.Of course, one of mygoals was to have WiFiway out in the street in front of my houseso that I can be browsing that internetwithout using mobile datawhile my kids are playing. So, for that, we're gonna haveto bring out the Big Kahunaand crawl around to my attic.I want more wireless range, basically straight outin front of this peak.Oh, right there, yeah. It's gotta pick uppatterns, kind of like that.So I'm thinking I should basicallybe able to have WiFi anywherein front of my house.(drilling sound)Oh, hello. It's like a dance party in my attic now,if you could just hangout here for, oh no.- Are you okay?- Oh yeah, I'm fine, I just, almost put a foot throughthe living room ceiling. Not a lot of extra slack on itbut as long as I nail thetermination on the first try itshould be fine.We got lights it's a good sign.Connect, does this thing nothave 2.4 Gigahertz support?Oh weird, it has threefive Gigahertz radios. It claims Note Nine is unholy, but that can't be right.I'm gonna unplug it I don't trust it.All right, now the clientsare switching over for sure. All right, let's have a look. The reception sucks though.Only got a couple of barsand speed, not too great. This is good.Everything is behaving as it should. We are behind its pickup pattern. Now let's go out in front of it.Now we got good reception. That's where it's mounted.Up there on that peak, okay? That is definitely better.Maybe not as better as I might have hoped.Let's go further away though.I'm now out in the middle of my cul-de-sacbut a stone's throw from my house. And that's looking pretty good, okay?Let's see how far we can take this party.I'm now standing on theboundary of my neighbor's yardacross the entire cul-de-sac, Dang!still get 100 megabit yoh!Start walking down the street.I'm now on another half cul-de-sac awaydown to two bars now butstill getting 50 megabit, only 10 up.How am I gonna upload my YouTube stories?Let's go about another cul-de-sac away.Man, I'm like real far awayfrom my house right now.I'm at least 50 meters from my front door. That's 150 feet for my Yankee friends.I am close to 100 metersfrom my front door now.And I still have 50 megabit on WiFi.Okay, we good. Why did it tell usmobility down there to dodata not on Ladies and gentlemen, let's keep walking.Over 100 meters from my friend door now.Got like an epic WiFi emergency here,Fire Department up to hereand it's dead.Mission accomplished. We got him.You know what else we got?My segue to our sponsor Squarespace. When you wanna build a websiteor even if you don't
