Huawei MediaPad M5 Tablets - Hands On at MWC 2018

Huawei's Big Move: The New MediaPad M5 Tablets

It looks like Huawei hasn't brought us a smartphone at Mobile World Congress, but instead has brought us three tablets! Although we can only see two of them here, there is a third model that we'll come back to shortly. Let's take a closer look at the new MediaPad M5 tablets, which come in two sizes: 8.4 inches and 10.8 inches.

The 10.8-inch model is definitely the nicer one, and it's great to see that both models share very similar specs inside. The screens are also identical, with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and high pixel density on both. On the 8.4-inch model, we get an impressive 359 PPI, making for excellent clarity, especially on the smaller screen. These tablets are designed specifically for media consumption, and it's interesting to note that the 10.8-inch model has a landscape orientation.

On the back of each tablet, you'll find speakers running along the top and down the bottom, similar to older MediaPad tablets. This also means that both models support Dolby Atmos, providing a really superb sound experience when paired with compatible speakers. Underneath the screen, we have an Kirin 960 chip, which is actually very fast and has been used in other Huawei devices like the Quali smartwatch 9. The tablet also has a 2.5D glass screen that's extremely comfortable to hold and use.

Now, let's talk about the differences between the two models. It seems that there's a regular M5 model and an M5 Pro model, which are very similar but with one key difference: the M5 Pro comes with a stylus in the box. The specs of the M5 Pro are identical to the M5, except for this added feature. The stylus is comfortable to hold and has features like short cut buttons that make it easy to use for tasks like drawing, taking notes, or even just doodling.

The battery life on both models is quite impressive, with up to 50 days of usage on a single charge. This means you can enjoy your tablet for an extended period without needing to recharge it too often. The M5 Pro also comes with pogo pins underneath the screen that allow it to be paired with a keyboard case.

The only difference in terms of hardware is on the back of each model, where one has speakers and the other does not.
