Talking Cars with Consumer Reports #29 - Toyota Highlander and SUV crash tests _ Consumer Reports
The Ram outsold the Chevy Silverado in March, maybe thanks to some of us because we were on record saying that you know the Silverado may be a better truck but the Ram is probably a better car and most of us would rather drive that than the Silverado. Yeah, you know it also helps that I think Dodge is putting a bunch of money on the hood and Chevy is trying not to be so you know they're trying to maintain you, they're trying to get some money out of the trucks rather than just giving them away. But uh wait does that include the GMC or is it just Silverado? No, of course not, I mean no once you add the GMC, GM trucks have outsold Ram but that's not keeping Ram from being pretty happy about this, I mean there's been a lot floating around in the press that that redesign hasn't been really successful.
A little bit more about pickup trucks and I want to introduce a new segment for the podcast I call the one-minute rant. And what it is is that the person who gets the truck they're going to have to be I guess okay, um whoever gets the one-minute rant gets to rant for a minute so I because I came up with this idea get the first one-minute rant, so go for it, can you start the clock? Go, I'm pissed off that Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show picked a 2015 Ford F-150 King Ranch for his pickup truck. He made a big deal about buying a pickup truck he doesn't need a pickup truck, he wants to haul a couple pumpkins around his Connecticut estate or whatever but he went and you know he he picked this truck.
Now once he mentioned he wanted to buy a truck a whole bunch of Publications including us and every car company in the world wanted to help him buy a truck he went and he talked to Road & Track, and Larry Webster is a good guy that's fine and all that but he went and he bought a truck that is not on sale yet he bought they're not done with it, it's still in prototype form. And it became a whole big thing about the F-150's fingertips on a 4x4, they brought four dealers in to the deck of the Intrepid to see who got the chance to sell him the truck but it's not a real truck, it doesn't exist. A customer can't buy a truck like that, it's all advertising, it is TV, it is marketing, it is money.
I got it in under a minute, yay me so uh any comments on my rant um well I think you're absolutely right. I mean this is all like um you know Ford wants to be in the conversation you know they uh ran up to the new redesign aluminum-built F-150 and uh shifted away the conversation from the aging current F-150 and not let Chevy and Ram have the whole show for themselves, yeah I think they're going to be very happy. You know that some guy's going to see this shiny truck on the show and be oh I want to get one of those and go to the showroom, they're like oh well we got a 2014 here but we can give you 10 grand off.
Well look I mean when it comes to recommending things for instance so if we were to recommend someone a truck okay fine I could see him saying you know what I'm not really concerned about reliability or any of that or performance, but no one's driven this truck it's not done it's not like you could drive it and you know what it's going to be like. But to recommend and buy a truck that no one has driven, no one knows what it's going to be like seems like an odd Choice yeah so luckily we weren't put in the position we weren't going to do that and anyway the guy makes a couple of million dollars a year he can probably buy all of them.
I have to admit I haven't been following Jimmy Fallon so much because uh I don't stepen colar and him are at 11:30, so um I have to stay with st coar oh dude can't you get Hulu or something, oh man we stream this stuff and watch it at 7 o' at night that's all right, that's for another rant, that's right, another random games TV uh games TV watching habits.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: entest results for the Toyota Highlander SUV crash test results the new Chrysler 200 and I ran about a pickup truck next on talking cars hi everybody Welcome to talking cars with Consumer Reports I'm Tom muchler I'm Gabe shenhar and I'm Jake Fischer we've had a lot of questions on YouTube asking us when we are going to be done with our test at the Toyota Highlander well we've got it parked behind us the test test is done Gabe how' it turn out well the Highlander is very a very well-rounded uh vehicle they made it more stylish they made the handling more responsive so it's more enjoyable to drive it got uh it has better fuel economy it gets 20 m per gallon now as opposed to 18 for the previous generation yeah and 20 mes per gallon is pretty close to the top for that class yeah and also uh it used to be that the Honda Pilot uh was the only game in town if you wanted an eight passenger vehicle now the Highlander has that too yeah you have to get it in certain certain models you can't get a limited with with eight passenger that only comes with the captain's chairs but yeah you know it's a very familyfriendly very easygoing it is exactly it's an easygoing family uh easy to drive easy to live with uh nice uh family vehicle extremely functional so um no problem I mean it's been uh owner satisfaction has been through every generation's been awesome on this car so people like it yeah so the car scored very well in our test um it is is the highest among midsize SUVs the Dodge Durango out scores it but you can argue whether that's midsize or large and there aren't big differences in score question for you Jake would you go with a Highlander or our top pick s Hyundai Santa Fe um right now I mean it's interesting you look at the Highlander and what they've really done here is um they're making a little bit less boring I that was kind of one of the problems with uh well Toyota toy every Toyota right that isn't your MR2 that isn't CER to that's not boring at all but um but but they make very very competent Vehicles right this is what Toyota does right they're reliable they're fuel efficient um this car has got a little bit more stylish to it uh it's got also like Gabe says it actually drives a little bit better it's a little bit firmer and they didn't they didn't what we have seen with some Toyotas just kind of give up the ride totally and says oh we're going to make it sporty by you know putting uh you know 19inch wheels on it and making it real stiff so they didn't go that far right unlike the Avalon they didn't screw up the ride here yeah it's still reasonably comfortable yeah so I mean they're honestly they're both good choices um you know maybe I go with the Highlander I mean the other thing that came out was the the the crash tests of these these vehicles yeah the Highlander actually does it's got kind of an as up its sleeve it does so we've seen um the the new insurance Institute of Highway Safety they've come out with these small overlap crash tests and um this is a vehicle that does pretty well in that crash test and we haven't seen at um from a lot of the uh lot of the uh midsize SUVs right vehicles that were designed uh some years ago 6 Seven 8 years ago uh weren't designed to do well in that crash test yeah you know it's a pretty old class car makers seem to redesign things in chunks in classes and the midsize SUV class is pretty old I mean the pilot parked behind you that came out 08 08 yeah so you know it's got until 201 2016 to go oh yeah wow so so I mean that's really I mean G's exactly right I mean it's it's about when it comes to safety let me preface this so so there a couple advice you know should you buy a car when it first gets redesigned right um we've given advice when it comes to a lot of factors no and the reason is is because one you're not discounting the car when it's first year of production there's more demand for that car also the reliability tends to improve as that car ages so the pilot and it's you know 30th year of production they probably worked out some of the bugs in that car but safety it's another story when they first redesigned that vehicle now they're upgrading a lot of safety features they're putting in a lot of saf safety technology but when it comes to crash now they're actually building this to do well in the latest uh crash tests I mean you know and it brings up the subject of recommendations recommendations become sort of this complicated calculus of a bunch of different factors you know like you said the Highlander firste car you know it will get better and you know it will get better reliability as a years go by but Toyota typically pretty strong reliability out the front the Highlander has far better infotainment than a pilot does it it of course you know you can get much higher level of safety equipment on on a Highlander you know most of the automated uh you know the warning stuff you know it recommendations become kind of complex things but Al tell to the point that because some cars got a pour in this test we're not going to recommend them anymore right so uh yeah we're going to take the recommendations off of the Mazda CX9 the Kio Sorrento and uh the Honda Pilot yeah I mean the CX9 has been around forever yes that was 07 I think it's a pretty nice car it is a nice car yeah uh it's a lot for the money it's it just doesn't do well in this crash test n Kia sarento they say it was redesigned for 14 but it was updated so so I we were looking through the numbers just just before we were looking at midsize SUVs the luxury ones and the uh the the non-luxury ones and so far it looks like around 11 of them have been tested through through through this new test and only three of them have been rated poor and those are the ones that that Gab mentioned and we're going to remove the recommendations on that but clearly you can design a vehicle to do well and we expect that as the vehicles gets redesigned and we don't have you know old Vehicles basically going around you're going to see improvements in that crash performance you're going to see additional safety Tech interior Tech and a lot of reasons why people make the decision to upgrade a vehicle sure um you know they've tested like you said 11 SUVs uh only four have gotten good so far and they're all luxury SUVs they're the MDX the um Volvo XC 60 and 90 and the Mercedes ML I mean an MDX actually though isn't that much more money than a Highlander a lot of people wind up cross shopping the cars uh but a question that always comes up with these things is okay I own a Honda Pilot this data this news just came out am I driving a death trap what do I do and the answer is no you're not driving a death trap and the car is not any less safe than it was when you first bought it I mean the point is that the cars that were that came out before they were designed around certain standards um they didn't have that standard to go after they had they hadn't raised the bar so um the car is it's a safe vehicle but when it comes to recommendation and we talked a lot about this in terms of really what we're recommending you buy we recommend you buy the best so if you have a choice of a vehicle that does well in this crash test or one that did not do why would we recommend the car that doesn't do as well because you're going out to buy a new car you brand new cars right out there right now right so if you have this car you know at and say you have a 2010 pilot which I'm sure a billion people have you know it's it's a fine car and compared to other 2010 cars it really doesn't have a a deficit compared to the other ones or if you're looking at a used car and you're in the market for you know you're you're going to plunk down 18 Grand or 15 grand for a used SUV compared to what else you can get again it's a good choice yeah the only the only thing you're going to get to that point that would be safer would be God help you a used Volvo XC90 and we do not recommend anybody buying a a used Volvo xt90 uh you worked on a video that explains a lot about crash tests and how to put it all into perspective uh we recommend you go and take a look at that another thing that we'd love you to take a look at on YouTube is our first driver our review of the Chrysler 200 we got to spend a little bit of time with a press car what do you think Gabe um I think the car is uh is very stylish it feels very solid it's uh pretty quiet I think it uh the uh the front cabin with the electronic shifter and that whole console with a lot of room is pretty neat it's a gorgeous cabin the high level models have sort of floating wood panels it looks very nice it is yeah it has the nine-speed automatic which seems better calibrator than in the Jeep Cherokee it would be hard to be worse right and um but the car itself is um dynamically it's not it's not brilliant you know it's uh it's okay I mean I don't think a lot of people are going to complain about it but when you up the ante a little bit it's no Ford Fusion well uh well and just just to point point out I mean the car that we've been driving our is the 36 so this is like a what 333,000 midsize without a sunroof without a sunroof so this this is a very expensive Highline model and even when you look at the Cherokee you know if you go and load a thing to the hilt and you have a you know $36,000 small SUV you there's a lot of neat features to that vehicle I think really what's going to be interesting is you know like you mentioned the nine-speed which works okay when you got a whole bunch of power I mean you know four spe a fourspeed automatic works pretty well when you 300 horsepower quite frankly but um but what happens when you get to the four-cylinder with the more mainstream vehicles and take out some of that content and you know keep in mind I mean we have such a competive class in midsize midsize sedans you 22 Grand 23 Grand you got yourself an accord you know ex yeah with all sorts of stuff right so what's going to H what is that $23,000 $24,000 uh Chrysler 200 going to be like let me just throw this in I mean we we did drive the uh four-cylinder briefly it it feels a little lighter on its feet but I mean that engine is uh they did a good job suppressing some of the noise characteristics it sounds like a dies on our Dart yeah it does but uh the uh that engine has never been good in terms of uh fuel economy and acceleration it's never been compet competitive it's a very good-look car I think it's it's going to compete a little bit more successfully with maybe the buck Regal the Volvo uh S60 you know sort of slightly more premium sedans that aren't quite BMW 3 Series uh it's not exactly an a quarter it's not in a direct a quarter Camry I mean that's the market it is it's being put in but that's not where it's most competitive yeah I think if you're uh if you're set to buy a cam or an a cord it's a no-brainer I mean I don't think you're you need to bother with looking at a whole lot more than that I mean if you're not interested in cars or driving then um mean these these cars are Commodities I mean they're they sell like you know 400,000 of these a year and uh it's all you need to know I think chisler would be happy to sell 100,000 yeah uh GM's had quite a bit of bad news recently you know a lot of problems with cars in their past you know the ignition switches that we talked about in the last episode they've also had the problem that uh in March the ram outsold the Chevy Silverado yeah um maybe thanks to some of us because uh we we were on record saying that you know the Silverado may be a better truck but uh the ram is probably a better car and most of us conversation from the Aging current F-150 and not let Chevy and uh and RAM have the whole uh show for themselves yeah I think they're going to be very happy you know that that some guy's going to see this shiny truck on the show and be o I want to get one of those and go to the showroom they're like oh well we got a 2014 here but we can give you 10 grand off well look I mean when it comes to recommending things for instance so if we were to recommend someone a truck okay fine I could see him saying you know what I'm not really concerned about the reliability or any of that or the performance but no one's driven this truck it's not done it's not like you could drive it and you know what it's going to be like but to recommend and and buy a truck that no one has driven no one know what's it's going to be like seems like like an odd Choice yeah so luckily we weren't put in the position we weren't going to do that and anyway the guy makes a couple million dollars a year he can probably buy all of them well I have to admit I haven't been following Jimmy Fallon so much because uh I uh both stepen colar and and him are at 11:30 so um I have to stay with st coar oh dude can't you get Hulu or t something oh man we stream this stuff and watch it at 7 o' at night that's all right that's for another ramp that's right another random games TV uh games TV watching habits so that's going to wrap up this episode of talking cars next episode we're going to be coming to you from the New York Auto Show we always look forward to doing that we look forward to seeing you next time so thanks\n"
