The GT Black Series: A Lap Record to Be Remembered
For those familiar with the GT3 racing car, it's no secret that this vehicle is serious business behind the wheel. That being said, when adapted for road use, this thing is even more serious - a truly formidable machine that demands respect. The GT Black Series has been out on track at Hockenheim, and its lap times are nothing short of impressive, setting records faster than any other road car, with the exception of only one other - the McLaren Cenote.
As for me, I have had the pleasure of experiencing the thrill of driving a GTR GTR Pro and soon-to-be GTR Roadster. These cars may not be as extreme as the GT Black Series, but they're still incredibly fun to drive. With their comfortable seats, spacious luggage area behind the hatchback, and advanced technology features like adaptive cruise control, these vehicles are designed to be both practical and enjoyable. And let's not forget about the options - with a range of choices available, it's easy to customize your driving experience.
My personal GT Black Series is due to arrive in just over two months' time, give or take a month or so. I've been eagerly awaiting this moment, as I've always wanted my car to be made in the iconic Solar Beam color that was introduced by Mercedes when the SLS first launched. While it's not possible for them to paint any new Mercedes models in Solar Beam anymore, I'm determined to make mine stand out. I'll be taking delivery of the car as soon as it arrives and will immediately start making plans to take it on a trip to the Nürburgring, where I'll put it through its paces.
The Nürburgring: A Track Like No Other
For those who may not know, the Nürburgring is one of the most iconic racing tracks in the world. Its 12.9 miles of twists and turns will push any vehicle to its limits - or beyond. The GT Black Series has already proven itself to be a force to be reckoned with on this track, setting a lap time that's hard to beat. But what if it could go even faster?
In fact, I'm convinced that someone like Marcel Fässler would have been able to shave off precious seconds from the current record time. After all, he and his team pushed the boundaries of performance in their Porsche 919 Hybrid, setting a record that still holds today. If the GT Black Series could do something similar, it's likely that we'd see a new record set - and a whole lot of excitement along the way.
The Impact of Lap Records: What It Means for Manufacturers
When one company sets a lap record, it sends a clear message to others in the industry. It says, "We're not just talking about performance; we're talking about pushing the limits." And that's what makes this achievement so significant. The GT Black Series has done more than just set a new standard for road cars - it's shown us that there's still room for improvement.
As a result, manufacturers will be looking to upgrade their engineering budgets and push their development teams to work even harder. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved: we get to see the latest and greatest technology on our roads, while manufacturers can showcase what they're capable of.
Conclusion
The GT Black Series has done it again - setting not one, but multiple lap records at the Nürburgring. I've been following its progress with great interest, and I'm excited to put it through its paces myself in the coming months. Whether you're a seasoned racing enthusiast or just someone who appreciates the thrill of performance, this car is sure to deliver.
So there you have it - the story of the GT Black Series, a lap record-breaker that's got everyone talking. And don't forget to stay tuned for plenty more Nürburgring coverage - it won't be long before I'm back on track, pushing the limits of this incredible machine.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys i'm shmee hello and welcome back to the channel where some exciting news from mercedes amg the gt black series has set the production road car lap record at the nurburgring nordschleifer we've been waiting to hear if it could do it and with marrow angle at the wheel the time is six minutes 43.6 seconds a truly remarkable feat when you see the official video and the conditions that the car was actually driving in as well so what does this mean let's run over the record talk about the future i can tell you now i am very excited for the imminent arrival of my gt black series as well firstly what an achievement a huge congratulations tomorrow engel and to the team at mercedes amg and what is actually their first production car lap record at the famous nurburgring in recent years it's a title that has bounced from porsche to lamborghini back to porsche back to lamborghini but now in the hands of amg with the gt black series the new king of the green hell i'm sure many of you like me have been wandering and waiting for this announcement waiting to see what this car could do and it's actually a story that i think began about two years ago when the prototypes for the gt black series of course at the time we didn't know the name but the mule cars and the camouflage were already running at the nurburgring during the industry pool testing sessions and we were wondering what was this car going to do would it be faster than the gt2 rs and then the aventador sbj well now we know the time on the 20.6 kilometer nordschleifer as opposed to the full 20.832 which we'll talk about in a moment has been revealed as 6 minutes 43 seconds 0.616 ahead of the lamborghini aventador svj and by the way not even in optimal conditions it was cold and it was also a little bit damp which makes me wonder what could this car actually do could it go into the 630s well maybe one day we will find out but what does it actually mean to be a lap record holder why is this so important especially at the nurburgring well without a doubt it is the most intense and grueling race circuit in the entire world there are a host of different factors from its length over 20 kilometers to its terrain the surprise undulations the difficulty in actually memorizing the entire circuit to the surprise treacherous weather conditions that lie in weight around the next corner as we often seem to see during the 24-hour races to its history and what it represents to the motorsport events that have taken place and some of the dangers and mystique associated with it there is no other place like the nurburgring and that is why it's so special to have a lap record at that particular location and in fact manufacturers spend huge amounts of money to develop and test their cars to go to the nurburgring and ultimately to close it to set the ultimate time because it has a big impact on sales now of course not all customers will drive their cars at the absolute limit but in a world with a lot of very capable machines it's the ultimate top trumps how fast did your car lap the nurburgring how quick or how capable can it actually be and that's a big part of all of this a halo product in fact for the brands themselves and justification for spending the money to do the testing the development and to go and run a lap record of course i've spent a lot of time at the nurburgring myself in recent times doing many laps with the sls black series also with the gtr pro and almost the gt black series is the amalgamation of those two cars and i hope i'm going to be lucky enough to do some laps as well in the not too distant future ideally with some tuition from marrow engel to see how to drive it properly i think we could say but in any case this is important which is why you have this huge battle between the manufacturers to go and set a time now for me i remember in a big way when the first car went sub 7 when the 918 spyder set a time of 657.00 that was a big deal because up to that point the 918 by many had been written off in comparison with the other hybrid hyper cars at the time the mclaren p1 and the ferrari laferrari but here it was it settled that record and almost overnight the cars were sold out there was huge demand and a perfect demonstration of how significant this is that record then fell to the lamborghini hurricane performante with a six minutes 52.01 time although a video that many have questioned in the meantime but again a big seller for the puffermante because to many people here was a car that could go faster than the 918 spyder porsche then came back with the 911 gt2 rs the 991.2 and did a 657.44 again another few seconds taken off the record and over this last decade the record has changed hands maybe every year or two years so it's getting almost quite regular i could say to now change again but after the gt2 rs along came the aventador svj the coupe doing a 6 44 down to the 644s a huge i should say a very small time in fact but incredibly impressive for a very big and heavy car as well but that record has stood for the last couple of years other than one other car we need to discuss which i'm sure many people are screaming the manti racing gt2rs mr now that car in fact did a time of six minutes 40.3 you might be thinking that's 3.3 seconds faster than the gt black series so why doesn't that count what's going on here well that's why we talk about manufacturers production road cars series production road cars which means as they left the factory homologated as per the german regulations and fully legalized to be driven on the roads the manti racing car is a road legal vehicle but didn't leave from the manufacturer as serious production in that specification which is why the new title at six minutes 43.616 goes to the gt black series let me explain these two different lap lengths the two different configurations that create either 20.6 kilometers on the one hand or 20.832 on the other how does that work a difference of 232 meters well that actually represents a short straight in front of tribune 13 grandstand 13 which traditionally was never counted as part of the full lap in fact the finish line falls short of actually getting to a complete lap hence the 20 600 meters and that was always used by sport auto for their super tests and it was used in the case of the 19 the perfomante the gt2 rs the svj and the 643 time of the gt black series now last year 2019 the nurburgring actually introduced their own systems for monitoring lap records for using a notary their timing gear and for ensuring it was basically a level playing field i think they suspected that manufacturers maybe weren't playing by the book so they ensure now that road cars are in full specification that the timing gear is exactly as it needs to be and they have a notary that signs it off and awards it the exact time that it achieves on the new layout the 20 832 meter layout which has the very same finish line as start of course it's a flying lap they start flying across the start they finish flying across the end but basically a complete lap as you would traditionally think about it for the nurburgring nordschleifer which i will also stress is not the same lap that you actually drive during tourist and fart and the tourist drives where you start or you would consider that you're starting at btg that's the normal representation bridge to gantry but missing out the dotting of her which is yet another long stretch so you have to think when it comes to nurburgring that it's not all the same and some people might claim this time some people might claim that time but you need to share a likeness and that's why the nurburgring stepped in to try and monitor this and keep it all fair so for the gt black series of course that additional 232 meters takes a bit of time takes a couple of seconds and the time in fact is six minutes 48.047 but if you said just that time you would be confused because that's slower than the spj and the gt2 rs but of course it's a longer lap overall it is a lap record holder but this is going to be confusing i think for a few years until cars get a touch faster and the times start creeping down and we can start to see how it all pieces together knowing of course that the nurburgring have had the notary and i do want to read out quickly exactly the phraseology behind this numerous conditions must be met for both record times to be recognized in addition to timekeeping with calibrated photoelectric sensor technology official record attempts and attempts to achieve a lap time are always accompanied by a notary in addition to monitoring the timekeeping the vehicles and the tyres are also inspected and approved by the notary the classification of the vehicle classes is based on the official categories of the german motor transport authority so you can see they do take these things pretty seriously now another thing i would like to discuss is the setup of the car itself now traditionally we've always joked about cars running with different suspension different setups more power different tyres whatever it might be but mercedes amg have actually confirmed the entire setup of this car and in the configurations that a customer for example could actually calibrate their own car there are things you can change and adjust itself so the car that was driven was a gt black series with the track package with the cage and the four point harnesses which i've ordered for mine as you'd probably expect it had the front splitter extended into what's called the race position so underneath you can pull a few catches slide the front splitter forward of course that gives more down force on the front axle the damping is adjusted minus five millimeters at the front and minus three millimeters at the rear which increases the venturi effect as a result it also has the maximum camber of negative 3.8 degrees at the front and negative three degrees at the rear another thing that owners of the car can actually adjust themselves should they wish and set the car up for a track it also had the nine stage traction control remember for the amg gtr they introduced the nine stage yellow toggle in the center of the dashboard like in the gt3 cars and for the drive marrow was switching it between setting six and setting seven and i love that they tell us this depending on the section because of course as we mentioned it was not perfectly dry and lastly the tyres are the sport cup 2r mo soft compound factory tyres a tyre you can have from the factory fully homologated as opposed to being something specific for the track a tyre that of course won't have the longest of lifetimes but it will set that ultimate one or two laps especially at the nurburgring a little bit more at a regular shorter circuit but a tire that i imagine or i hope i'll be able to try on mine at some point in future but otherwise a completely stock gt black series the car with the new flat plane crank four liter by turbo v8 730 horsepower 800 newton meters and obviously the active aero working on the rear spoiler and all the other aerodynamic features that it introduced when it was launched a car that when you look at the numbers and how it was going to stack up of course it's heavier than the gt2 rs and some of the other cars that are out there from the likes of mclaren or ferrari or some of the carbon fiber tubbed cars but it has an insane amount of power and a lot of aero you can see the aero the cooling ducts from the bonnet for example all inspired by the gt3 race car the car that you'll normally find narrow behind the wheel off so for a road car this thing is serious and that is not the only lap time it's also been out with sport auto at hockenheim and set times i think faster than any other road car other than the cena and i'll talk about that again in a second so the gt black series is a quick quick thing but the mclaren cena has never set a lap time at the nurburgring i would love to be able to drive mine around but sadly i'm not going to be that fast but the cena is probably the only car that i think could go faster the center is well 800 horsepower 1300 or so kilos wet weight it's significantly lighter even more power and even more aero than the gt black series and undoubtedly if that did a record lap that would achieve it i think anyway that's my personal opinion for the gt black series though this is a car that i also know from my experience with my gtr gtr pro and soon gtr roadster it's a car you can just drive you can do miles and miles it's also a car that has a luggage space behind with the hatchback with the boot the seats are comfortable it's equipped with nice technology you can book and choose on the options to have a good sound system the adaptive cruise control it's a car that's not fully fully stripped out yes it's race car and it's fairly stripped out but it's still also a comfortable car which is what i said earlier as well about what makes these cars appeal to customers is that it's also very very usable now talking about mine in particular it is going to be due in about two months or so i don't think it will be here by the end of the year hopefully in early 2021 as i've mentioned it is however going to be going almost immediately to be made solar beam yellow because i really want to have its solar beam it's impossible now to actually order solar beam from the factory they don't paint any mercedes models in solar beam anymore but that is the color i want for this car it was the launch color of the sls and it's the color that i'm going to choose because i think it will look amazing alongside that mystic blue so that's always been the plan that's what's going to happen with it especially during the quiet months with a view to then getting it we're letting it sit for a while to let the paint settle getting it ppf'd and then getting it out to the nurburgring come next spring come april or so to go and do some amazing laps which i can't wait for that is going to be epic the last topic to mention i alluded to this earlier i think the car could have gone even quicker the conditions on the day if you go and watch the official video it was just after 5 pm 1700 the light was going so already in very dim light on a track that had not completely dried out it had been raining the night before being cold 7 degrees 10 degrees track temperature there were still some damp sections of the circuit and i would be pretty confident that somebody like maro would be able to take a couple more seconds off that lap time if given another attempt so who knows if somebody goes out to beat it maybe amg will go back out to try and do it again this is quite fun actually to think about what this holds because ultimately this pushes performance from all of the manufacturers if one company sets a record another puts the money towards the development and engineering budgets to go and make it possible to take it even further and ultimately we as the customers get to win and enjoy the capabilities of these machines and what people are actually able to make in any case this is an amazing result for mercedes amg one again i'd like to congratulate marrow and all of the team for their achievement it's something i'm obviously very personally invested and interested in a result i've been waiting to hear but now we know the announcement came six minutes and 43 has been done over a second ahead of the 644.97 of the sbj but now we have it gt black series king of the ring a lap record so thank you very much for watching guys if you'd like to find out more and go through the full analysis with my friend misha who's gone through and studied the whole lap do also ahead and check out his channel that video will be coming very soon as well if not already but for plenty more nurburgring coverage do stay tuned i'm
