Moto G Dual SIM USB OTG works fine after Android Kitkat 4.4.2 Update

The Moto G: A Tale of Two Versions

I'm Ranjit, and I have the pleasure of owning two versions of the Moto G - the international version and the Dual SIM version that is officially sold in India. In this video, I'll be showing you how the Dual SIM version handles the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update and how it affects the USB OTG functionality.

One of the good things about the Dual SIM version is that it still works with USB OTG support after the KitKat update. This means that you don't need any third-party software to make it work, which is a significant improvement over earlier versions. To demonstrate this, I've brought along a USB OTG cable and two videos loaded on it.

When I insert the USB thumb drive into the phone, it says that it's preparing for USB and the functionality has indeed been improved. Earlier in 4.3 update, many file managers couldn't read files from the USB OTG cable, but now with the Astro File Manager, any other file manager like ES File Etc can also access the contents of the USB drive.

I'm going to open up the Astro File Manager and show you how it works. As you can see, our USB OTG Drive is clicked, and we get an option of "USB Disk" here. If I click on that, I can access the contents of this USB drive. For example, let me open up one of these videos - it's a 1080p video. We'll use MX Player to play it, and as you can see, it's playing smoothly while connected to the USB drive.

It's interesting to note that on the international version of the Moto G, USB OTG functionality doesn't work out of the box after the KitKat update. You need third-party applications like Nexus Media Manager to make it work. On the other hand, the Dual SIM version of the Moto G handles USB OTG support seamlessly without any issues.

Another feature that's been improved is the option for unmounting the USB storage in the settings. Earlier, this was not available, but now you can click on "Unmount" to remove the USB thumb drive. This makes it easier to manage your storage and access external devices.

If you're planning to update your Moto G Dual SIM to Android version 4.4.2 KitKat, don't worry about the lack of USB OTG functionality. It works perfectly well on the Indian dual SIM version without any issues. In fact, it's quite interesting to note that even though the international version has only a single Sim slot, the USB OTG functionality still doesn't work out of the box.

In addition to this video, I've made around 15 other videos on the Moto G that you can find in my YouTube show notes. Thank you for watching, and I hope to see you in my next video!
