I'm excited to start building this bench for my shop. I've decided to go with three different cuts for the 2x4s, and I'll need to cut down one of them slightly to fit inside. For now, I want to keep things simple, but I may add some storage underneath at a later time.
I'm using a full sheet of plywood for the top, which should provide plenty of support. The bottom one will be a bit smaller, as it needs to fit inside the shop. As I work on this project, I need to consider how I'll move everything around in the shop and make sure there's enough space.
One of the challenges I'm facing is working with large pieces of plywood like this. It's always better to do things safely, especially when you're working alone. To avoid accidents, I've decided to take my time and be more cautious. I'll also need to get creative with my setup, as I don't have anyone else around to help me out.
I want to thank all of my patrons who support me through Patreon. Their contributions are invaluable, and I appreciate their encouragement. I'm grateful for the enthusiasm from patrons like Steven Mann, Eric Weiss, Derek Coates, Chuck Faulkner, Puffy Muffins, Andy the Viking, Dwight Smith, Christopher Walters, Todd Stewart, and Franklin De Tanklin. I also want to welcome my newest patron, Mikey.
Now that I have all my materials ready, it's time to start building. I'm using a template to install the bracket on the 2x4s, which will provide extra support for the bench. The longer bolts are making it easier to assemble everything, and I can see how things are coming together. Once I get this part done, I'll move on to attaching the casters.
I've chosen these casters because I'm concerned about them unlocking over time due to vibrations from my CNC machine. By using these casters, I can ensure that the bench remains stable and secure. It's also easier to roll around than I expected! To achieve a smooth fit, I'll make sure to leave an overhang of 2 inches everywhere.
Next, I'll attach the L-brackets from the bottom, which will provide additional support if I ever need to remove or modify the bench in the future. This way, I can ensure that everything stays secure and can be easily swapped out or changed as needed. By using this design, I'm confident that my shop will benefit from having a sturdy and functional workbench.
As I continue working on this project, I'll make sure to share updates and insights with my audience. Despite building this in about an hour and a half, it's been a fun experience, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share it with everyone. Now that I've finished assembling the bench, I can finally show off its final form – once the CNC machine arrives.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's up guys i'm nick and this is build that build a place where bigger is always better that's right guys on this episode we're building the mag the mega bench baby mega binge i'm very quickly running out of flat space to put tools so either need to make more flat space or i need to get rid of some tools and we all know we're not getting rid of tools as you guys may know i have a cmc coming here before too long hopefully fingers crossed and it takes up like a four to five foot footprint so we are going big baby and by big i mean wide and long not tall it's it's going to be a regular sized bench so i went down to the deepers and it picked me up a uh a bench top that's right i'm not even going to cut this one down um we are going to make this thing 4x8 because build and build baby ready idea is to have a place to put my cnc to put some of the tools in the shop underneath and i also want to make it just tall enough so i can use it as an outfeed table for my table saw when i'm cutting stiff we'll put plans to this bench down below it is going to be a beast and you might have to modify it a little bit if you're going to use it as an outfeed table your table saw may not be the same height but the plans will be there i'm also going to be timing this build if you don't hear anything else about that the rest of the time then i did not it took longer than i thought but i've seen a lot of videos on guys that are building a bench in uh in under an hour the size of this is what kind of worries me on that and so i designed this bench so it'll be really easy to put together so we're using these two by fours and half inch plywood i mean i i was gonna buy three quarter i normally do for my bench tops but it's still so expensive man if you want to see benches made with true three-quarter inch plywood check out my patreon page join up if that's your thing so this build is only going to have three different cuts for the two by fours the top is gonna be a full sheet of plywood the bottom one we're gonna have to cut down a little bit to fit inside i wanna leave the bench pretty simple for now i may add some storage underneath at a later time but i kind of need to get everything sorted and see what's going to go where because in order to have this bench in the shop i'm going to have to move some stuff and tear some stuff down and it's it's a thing it's a thing guys it's a thing all right and just like that we got two hey same operation two times so kids let that be a lesson to you i thought i could control my material once i got towards the end it started to lift up and i couldn't keep it down and be safe so i just kicked the saw off and i will take the rest of that off with my circular saw because i had gotten to a point where i was incredibly unsafe with my material when you're working with large pieces of plywood like this it's always better to do it with another person i just i don't have anybody else here to help me out so sometimes you got to get creative when i say creative i mean creative and not injured so ah all right but that's gonna work so as we put the rest of these guys on here i figured i would just say thanks for sticking around till this time in the video i appreciate it the shop is expanding patreon is expanding subscribers is expanding if you like these kind of videos hit that like button if you really want to help me out hit that subscribe button it doesn't cost you anything and it helps me out probably more than you know and talking about people that help me out more than you can know i just want to say thanks to all of my patrons right here these guys are incredible especially my top tier boilermaker patrons steven mann eric weiss derek coates chuck faulkner puffy muffins andy the viking dwight smith christopher walters todd stewart and franklin de tanklin also i want to give a special shout out to our newest patron mikey all right back to work all right i think i got my groove down a little bit more on these things now all right so you install the bracket using a little template then you're going to take the longer one of these bolts run it through the back and since you have it like this you can see everything whereas i was trying to assemble it upside down so get your nut on there and tighten this that's in there pretty good then come in here with this bad boy shorter one and now you can see to feed this one through two and then another nut and bob is your uncle and oh yeah so the reason i went with these kind of casters is i was afraid if i just had locking casters and i had the cnc going that over time there might be enough vibration to unlock those casters and i i could just see myself stepping out of the shop and coming back and this thing just like surfing all over the shop oh my god that is super easy that's easier to roll around than my uh than this bench is wow all right i'm gonna hit some ah okay so now i'm just gonna i'm going around i'm making sure i've got my two inch overhang everywhere so now that our bab big ass bench is uh is centered on there i'm just going to take some of these these l brackets and i'm going to attach it from the bottom that way if i ever want to remove it in the future i don't want to if i drill in from the top then there's a chance you can get goo and stuff in there and nobody likes the goo you know what i'm saying it's gonna attach from the bottom and then that way if i want to swap this out or change it around or anything like that i can do it you guys get the idea right hello there i in no way shape or form built this in an hour but i think some things like doing the l brackets and having to assemble the casters kind of played into that and filming probably build this an hour and a half and i'm just a little uh just a little tired after that so i went got whiskey but check this thing out okay so i wish i could show you like the shop's final form but like the cnc hasn't come in yet things like that these are probably temporary down here right now this is going to move there's a table over there that needs to get out of the shop but look at all this space sweet sweet space sweet sweet bourbon and thanks for playing now i gotta get to work all right that's what she said like a glovy glove owwhat's up guys i'm nick and this is build that build a place where
