"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enrev up your engines people like ford pickup trucks but the price of new ones is starting to drive some people insane a new one's 53 grand up i paid 7 500 bucks for this used let's see did he make a wise decision i'm kind of guessing that he did not just looking at it cosmetically you can see this thing's in good shape now we noticed that the step here it's kind of rusty he's going to get another one that's just aftermarket stuff but it's got a humongous bed one time it had a gooseneck trailer hooked up to it that shows you how much these things can tow and since it's a 4x4 you're not going to get stuck anywhere and yes it needs new tires you know you're going to expect that buying a used vehicle it even has the manual lockers and the lockers here and they still go by hand that amazes me i can imagine what this thing's been through because it has two previous owners all right the coating is wearing off you can buff the wheels up if you want but really it's a big old work truck he wants to use it to pull his trailer around when he goes places and as we open the hood we can see what's inside a 5.4 later it's going around a long time hundreds of thousands of miles as long as you keep oil and water in the radiator let's start it up and listen starts right up exhaust sounds fine the church got hand cranked windows one less thing to break as we can say it's got 139 000 miles and like i say the engines they can last hundreds of thousands of miles now the transmissions are always the first thing to go bad we're going to check it when we do a road test but i've seen them go sometimes 230 240 before they needed replacing and then you get a ford factory remanufactured ones and it might go another 230 240 so that's not a big worry two-wheel drive four-wheel high four-wheel low electronic but if you notice it's a pioneer this isn't the factory one they added this on well he didn't add it on it came with it when he bought it so what the heck that's part of a 7 500 bucks utilitarian seats not fancy leather seats seats for a pickup truck that's what they're supposed to be you put too much money in fancy seats you're going to ruin them if you use it for work idle smoother silk the ac is still freezing cold the two previous owners one was a minister had a landscaping business did a lot of highway driving and as i tell people highway driving mileage is equivalent to about one-tenth city so if you go 5000 miles on a highway that's like 500 miles in stop-and-go city traffic this had a lot of highway driving so i'm assuming it's going to ride good but i'm going to take it for a spin to see this has the usual ford failure the shifters often get loose and you got to mess around with them but hey that's the way fords are it still works and the first thing you notice is you're high up in here it's the big f-250 truck has the extended mirrors on it it drives like a big truck this isn't the modern ford in a basic suspension system the new ones do ride quite a bit better there's no arguing that plus they weigh less because they got a lot more aluminum where this has steel and this gets a little worse gas mileage but still so far it chose to be a solid truck especially for towing it can pull a lot of weight which is what he wants it for you can see how smooth the transmission shifts are so we're gonna take our little drag strip here handle's good enough for a big old pickup truck let's see what's left of its engine since it's a 2006 with 139 000 miles here we go it's a heavy truck but it's moving you can hear that engine smooth shifts and tranny's still going good still in excellent shape considering he bought this truck for 50 000 or so less than what it would have cost if you bought a brand new one i would say it's not that bad of a deal especially since it's the 4x4 in case you want to take it out into the fields these large factory side mirrors it's great for towing you can see behind and i actually like this back window better it's a full-size window doesn't have that slot in the back kind of loses vision you can really see 360 degrees in one of these trucks which of course is great if you're towing a trailer you're towing the trailer what do you want you want pretty good views see what the heck you're doing so you don't back into something frankly i'm surprised at how well it rides considering the tires are all worn out and it needs new tires now you're buying a used vehicle as there's no warranty of course you're taking a gamble this one seems to have paid off so far we're gonna hook the computer up and see if there's anything we missed so here we go with the old scan tool you know the auto scan on this baby got the vin got everything right 524 later we'll do a fast scan realize one thing this may be an o6 but it's an f250 still pretty high level technology probably gonna find things that don't mean that much but it'll generally have some codes powertrain no codes the gem module has two failures so let's see what they are and here they are circuit transfer case two-wheel drive solenoid is open failure transmission case four-wheel drive solenoid fault of ignition key and circuit you see this all the time on these things the electronics are just too touchy as they age you can get weird things tripping like that especially when they say the modules the gem is a general electrical module you get all kinds of squirrely codes long as it works okay who cares the instrument cluster and see what that failure is again it's another fault of ignition key and circuit yeah everything's so complicated these days this stuff works who cares about these stupid codes i'm going to erase them all just clear them if they don't come back we don't care if they come back but it works okay we also don't care but if they come back and things don't work then at least we know what to look at so let's look at some data here live data here we go there's going to be a ton of information on this thing because it's a 2006 f-250 so far everything looks pretty normal battery's putting out 13.8 volts that's plenty enough look it even tells you the cylinder head temperature of course it's in centigrade celsius now because it's set up that way i can change it to english if i don't want to use metric temperature of the engine oil the fuel pump doesn't have any faults giving you the fuel rail pressure even though it's in metric we can change it to psi if we want it samples the fuel pressure it's desired 275.908 and it's 275.207 point that's almost perfect doesn't show anything that's wrong no faults we'll check out some more stuff are there any faults in any of them one through eight they're all no faults the long-term fuel trim it's subtracting a tiny amount one percent on one and on two it's adding point five percent you're not going to get perfect at something that's this old with 139 000 miles now maybe in a lexus but it's a four that's close enough it's not hurting anything at all it's got a very very slight i'm putting a camera here now watch see the slight wiggling the slight wiggling it's just a slight off balance at idle because one side's running very slightly rich and the other is running very slightly lean you could run some fuel injector in it that might help fuel injector cleaner a lot of times they're not firing perfectly you get some good cleaner cleans and if it goes back to exactly the same on each side but it could even be a tiny air leak on the intake manifold tiny little things can affect that doesn't affect the running so who cares total misfire number zero it's not misfiring works fine but let's say it didn't the scan tools are great you could control the pressure look at them all you can look at the data this has no faults you see everything says no fault so we know there's no problems but if there was you can actually test them with these machines as you can see in actuation tests look at all the stuff you can actuate and test i mean there's a tons of stuff remove the tables and make them go back to the factory specs you can halt the learning if you want to just leave it the way it is and see if there's a problem then you can resume it after you've done your testing you can do a power balance of the engine there's all kinds of things you can do check it out the power balance is pretty close yes like i say sometimes a tiny bit off but hey the engine's running fine 7 500 bucks about 50 grand less than what it costs new it's pretty well made truck and yeah it's got those goofy little glitches they all do that with all this computer stuff in it but it runs fine it shifts fine it breaks fine the only thing i do to the thing the way it stands now is i put new tires on it and here's some bonus questions and answers jab sar says i got an o6 decoy and somebody stole my catalytic converters here in houston my sister-in-law had her prius one stolen in downtown houston too i guess people are stealing cats there like mad the repair shop the insurance company recommended and they broke the bolts on the exhaust is that common and the estimates for left and right pipes and converters is about 50 percent higher when i see from auto parts stores am i getting scammed you got an insurance job they're paying for it right they have to guarantee catalyst converters that's federal law they have to guarantee them so the repair shop that's responsible for it now of course they mark things up they're not paying for it the insurance companies they're probably not buying them at the toyota dealer buying them somewhere else but they mark that stuff up if you're talking about price differential hey you can't do that with catalytic converters because the aftermarket ones especially the chinese-made ones are often garbage and don't work right so as long as you get your car back and the catalytic converter codes never come up and it runs fine leave it at that now if you were paying out of your own pocket that's another story but the insurance is paying for it and they told you to go to that shop so they have to pay it they said that's the shop we trust just let them do the thing and bolts do break off all the time when things are old i mean that's what 06 so that's uh you know a 16 year old vehicle yeah they will break off especially in houston where it's so humid that the cast iron and the steel rust like mad and they often will break off but they told you to go there so they said it's a good shop so let the insurance guys pay for it that's what you pay your insurance premiums for so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that bell you\n"
