The Importance of Portable Apps and USB Drives in Security Scenarios
As someone who regularly walks through security systems, I can attest to the importance of being prepared for unexpected situations. Recently, I had an experience that highlighted the value of having a portable app and a USB drive with me at all times.
I recall going through a security checkpoint where they scanned my body using a backscatter machine. This device scans your body and shows you all your fat wrinkles and private parts to those watching the screen. They always ask me to stay in place while they run the scan on me, and I'm not sure why I need to remove anything important from my pockets. In fact, I got busted once because I had lip balm in my pocket, which they thought was an incendiary device. Yes, I was trying to use it to take down a plane!
The reason they asked me to remove my keys is that I have a Swiss Army USB drive attached to them. Not a knife, mind you, but just a regular USB drive. I have it with me because I never know when I might need something like copy data back and forth to run an application without putting the application on the hard drive. It's a simple concept, really.
In our guide, we've outlined how to use a USB drive to run portable applications. You can run browsers on USB drives and plug them into PCs at cafes or random shops where you want to get online but don't want to use their web browser. Simply plugging in the USB drive and installing the right portable applications on it can make things quite simple.
Portable apps offer a convenient solution for those who need access to specific software without having to install it on another computer. They're dime-a-dozen, and while they might not be worth the price for some, they can be a lifesaver in certain situations. You could run browsers on USB drives and plug them into PCs at random shops where you want to get online but don't want to use their web browser.
One of the places we've recommended for portable apps is portable apps.com. This resource provides a wealth of information on how to create and use portable apps, as well as where to find them. The value of using portable apps is that you can take them with you wherever you go – even to your friend's house! You don't have to use their computer if you need to access the internet or run a particular program.
Portable apps can bail you out of situations in which you might not be able to use the applications installed on another computer. For example, if you're traveling and need to make a purchase but don't want to use your friend's computer, you can plug in your portable app and get things done. Having a portable USB drive with you at all times is something I've never considered until recently.
In fact, I have a collection of USB drives, some of which are still in their original packaging! I've got too many, to be honest, but it's crazy how often I end up needing them. So, if you haven't yet considered having one of these portable apps on you at all times, think twice – you never know when they might come in handy.
