Welcome to Android Weekly: Minis, Plus, and Compacts Take Center Stage
Hello everyone, I'm Jace, and we're here to talk all things Android on our show. This past week has been all about minis, pluses, and compacts - a trend that's got us wondering if manufacturers can provide Flagship power in smaller packages. For those of you who aren't familiar with the world of smartphones, let me explain what I mean by "Flagship." In simple terms, a Flagship device is the top-of-the-line model from a manufacturer, offering the best hardware and features available.
One of the devices that's been making waves in this category is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini. As expected, it's a smaller version of the popular S5, but with some key compromises to make it more compact. The display on this device is 4.5 inches, making it perfect for one-handed use - something that I'm sure many of us can relate to. But what about performance? Don't worry; Samsung hasn't skimped on power. The Galaxy S5 Mini is powered by a quad-core processor spinning at 1.4 GHz, along with 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage - expandable to 32 GB via the micro SD card slot.
The rear-facing camera on this device comes in at 8 megapixels, while the front-facing camera is a respectable 2.1 megapixels. The battery life is also quite impressive, with a 2100 mAh capacity and an ultra power saving mode to help you stretch it even further. But what really gets me excited about this device is that Samsung has included some of its popular features like Ultra Power Saving Mode, Kids Mode, and the revised S Health app - all of which take advantage of the heart rate monitor.
But wait, there's more! For those who love the Moto X but wish it was just a little bit bigger, there's a rumor circulating about a new device that might fill the gap. According to this rumor, the handset will come equipped with a 2.26 GHz quad-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a 5.2-inch display - all for the low price of 12 megapixels on the rear camera and 5 megapixels up front.
Of course, no discussion about Android devices would be complete without mentioning the latest operating system - Android L. Now, I know what you're thinking: "When will we see this OS in action?" Well, the good news is that it's already available to developers who want to get a head start on testing. And let me tell you, folks - this OS looks stunning. One of its standout features is the newly designed notifications system, which allows them to float near the top of the screen and pop up over any other application - even in full-screen immersive mode.
But what's truly impressive about Android L is that it takes all of these great features and turns them into a cohesive user experience. Of course, we're not quite ready for prime time just yet, but if you want to get a taste of what's to come, there are instructions on how to access the developer version in the show links below.
Last but certainly not least, we have some exciting news from the world of Sony Xperia devices. According to renowned xeria developer Doomlord, there's a new device in the works that's going to shake things up - or at least, that's what I think based on his leak. Apparently, this "slim down Flagship" will come equipped with a 2.5 GHz quad-core processor, a 4.5-inch display, 2 GB of RAM, and an impressive 20.7 megapixels on the rear camera - all while keeping its weight and size in check.
So what's going on here? According to Doomlord, this device is going to be perfect for those who want the best of both worlds: the power and features they need, without the bulk. And let me tell you, folks, if this leak pans out as promised, we're going to have a real treat on our hands.
