Welcome to Another Episode of Thirsty Today: Exploring Japanese Drinks
Greetings, and welcome back to another episode of Thirsty today! I'm excited to share with you another Japanese drink that I recently discovered while shopping in Los Angeles. The drink is called Capo, but as we'll see, this is actually the US name for a Japanese beverage that's more commonly known as CPUs.
When You Go to Japan, It's Called CPUs
In actuality, when you go to Japan, the drink is not called Capo at all. Instead, it's referred to as CPUs, which may seem confusing given the different names used in the US and Japan. However, I've learned that this change in name might be due to the fact that CPUs sounds a lot like "ciss," which isn't exactly the most flattering term in English.
The Original Flavor: A Fermented Drink with Milk
It's been said that the founder of CPUs discovered a fermented drink while traveling in Mongolia. While I couldn't verify this claim, it's clear that the original flavor of CPUs does contain milk or fermented milk. Upon opening my bottle of CPUs, I noticed that it had a milky white color and smelled like yogurt. This is no surprise, given that many Japanese drinks are known for their unique flavors and ingredients.
My Experience with CPUs
As someone who's lactose intolerant, I'm always hesitant to try new beverages that contain milk or dairy products. However, in this case, I decided to give CPUs a shot since I do fine with yogurt. To my surprise, I found that I could tolerate the drink just fine. The flavor was slightly yogurty, but it also had a fruity and citrusy taste that was quite refreshing.
Similarities with Gatorade
When I first opened my bottle of CPUs, I was reminded of a Gatorade in terms of its sour-sweet balance and slight saltiness. While it's not identical to a sports drink like Gatorade, the similarities are undeniable. CPUs is definitely quenching, thanks to its tartness and body.
Try It for Yourself!
I'd love to hear from you if you've ever tried Capo or CPUs before in the comments down below. Have you had any other flavors that you'd recommend? Are they worth trying? Let me know your thoughts!
In the next section, I'll be sharing with you another Japanese drink that caught my eye during my shopping trip in Los Angeles. Stay tuned!
