Picking the Right Smartphone: A Matter of Personal Preference

When it comes to choosing a smartphone, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Everybody has an opinion on what makes a great phone, and it's hard to say that anyone is right unless you're putting a lot of apostrophes in your kid's name. As someone who has put their own thoughts into the mix, I'm excited to share my top five picks for smartphones that can be purchased for under $400.

Coming in at number five, we have the BlackBerry Priv. This phone can be picked up for under $400 and offers an almost stock Android experience. It's got just been updated to Marshmallow, and it's worth noting that it has an incredible on-screen keyboard - perhaps the best physical keyboard available. Now, I know what you're thinking: "But there aren't many keyboards, so this must be a stretch." And you're right, but if you don't like the clickety-clack of actual keys, you can still use it as a trackpad.

At number four, we have everybody's favorite Nexus 6P with discount. This guy can be picked up for as low as $449, and it's built by Huawei, offering the best of Android - including being the first phone to get Android when it hits the market. You'll also get awesome build quality, incredible battery life, and a really thin package. It's no wonder this is one of the most popular phones out there.

Coming in at number three, we have Apple's flagship iPhone 6s Plus. This phone is exactly what you know you're going to get if you live inside of Apple's Walled Garden - it's one of your own real choices. The phone works well, with a nice screen and great camera. And let's be honest, who doesn't love iMessage? It's no wonder this is a fan favorite.

At number two, we have Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge. This thing looks good from absolutely any angle - it's like it was built to please. But it performs well too, with probably the best smartphone camera we've ever tested, and one of the best screens we've ever used. Of course, there is a questionable utility with the edges, but no doubt this is one of the best phones money can buy right now.

And finally, coming in at number one, we have HTC 10. They just released the HT C10, which offers a ton of awesome features. You'll get one of the best builds I've ever seen on a phone - it's incredible. The speakers are top-notch, with great boom sound that will blow your mind. And let's not forget about the camera - the front-facing camera has OIS, which is perfect for vloggers who like to record themselves. Plus, if you break or drop your device, HTC's UO protection means you get a new one for free. All of this makes this phone a really well-rounded choice for the best smartphone on the market.
