How To Hang Five BMX

Learning to Hang Five: A Beginner's Guide

The hang five is a fundamental skill in skateboarding that can seem intimidating at first, but with practice and patience, it can become a natural part of your riding. To start, you need to understand the concept of "hanging five," which means having both feet on the pedals, with your dominant foot forward. This position allows you to generate power and momentum for your turns.

To begin, find a safe and suitable spot to practice, such as an empty parking lot or a skate park. Start by getting comfortable standing over the board and pushing off with your dominant foot. Focus on placing your other foot on the pedal, but not too far forward, so that you can maintain balance. As you get more confident, try pushing off again and bringing your back foot to meet your front foot.

One way to start learning how to hang five is by practicing a " drag-and-release" technique. This involves dragging your back foot across the ground behind you, then releasing it as you push off with your front foot. Repeat this motion several times until you feel comfortable with the movement. As you get more confident, try adding weight transfer and balance shifting to improve your overall stability.

Another key part of mastering the hang five is learning how to turn while in the position. To do this, keep your arm straight as you lean into the turn. This will help you maintain balance and control over the board. If you're trying to turn left, keep your left arm straight and if you're turning right, keep your right arm straight.

Finally, it's essential to know how to get out of the hang five position safely. To do this, focus on keeping your front foot firmly planted on the pedal, while bringing your back foot down to meet it. As you feel comfortable with the movement, try hopping off the board and landing smoothly. If needed, spot for your front foot to catch, as catching your back foot first can be tricky.

As you become more confident in your hang five skills, it's time to take them to the next level by incorporating manual pads into your riding. Manual pads are small platforms that attach to the ground, allowing you to ride over obstacles and maintain control of your board. By mastering the hang five, you'll be able to perform more advanced tricks and stunts with ease.

Some final tips for mastering the hang five include keeping a steep incline until the very end of the curb, maintaining moderate speed throughout, and applying gentle pressure on your front foot as needed. With practice and patience, you'll be hanging five like a pro in no time!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys I'm Cody Krueger and today I'm going to teach you how to hang five well the Hang five is generally an easy trick it's just like a nose manual the more you try it the more you're going to get better at it um the first thing that you need to be able to do in order to hang five is you need to be able to find your balance point your balance point is key when trying nose manual tricks or or front heavy tricks what your balance point is is it's the point in which you're not going to fall over but you're just about to so you could keep it for a really long time the way ad and I found how to uh find our balance point is we did the stationary hang five um it's really simple all you do is you're just on the ground you do whatever foot you have front forward and you put that front forward foot on your peg you put a little pressure and you get your seat on your ass so it's like this and your other foot is tiptoe and you just have your arms straight looking down at the ground and you just lift up your foot it well if you're short not a problem you could you could either lower your seat that that could help or what some people do to start learning hang fives you can start rolling like this you can have your foot on the Peg and you could just up pop it up you should learn how to fall just like that there's two types of Falls there's a leap frog fall where you just push your bike from under you and you just hop over or you could do the kind of fall that I just did I leave my opposite hand behind and I just tilt the bars a little bit so I have enough time to get over the bars so I don't clip my feet you really don't want to clip your feet you don't want to land on your face it's not going to be a fun time so once you have the stationary hang five down if you have a hill assess to you that's really good to start off with you could get into the stationary hang five and you could just go down go down the hill like I'm and I will show you in a second and you can just drag your toe and then pick it up and you and you'll find that your leg is going to start to like move back and forth on its own if you're too far back it's going to push you forward and if you're too far forward it's going to help you level yourself out so you don't fall over the bars as you can see we're on a hill right now stupid phone uh what you want to do is you want to get on the stationary ink five like I showed you before and you just you just kind of uh just push off with your opposite foot like this and you just drag your foot you can do this forever it won't hurt you and then you can let go and then you can drag your foot again it's a really easy way to start learning how to hang five it will give you the gist of it when you actually want to start rolling and play place your having your foot be placed on the peg the third step is just having your uh other foot on there that isn't front foot forward and then you could just push off with your dominant foot and you could just place your foot gently on the Peg and just put all your weight back and then push it forward and then you'll see that your ass is going to catch the seat and once your ass catches that seat that's the perfect position you want to kind of if you can have a little higher seat it's a little easier so you could clench your calves together so your bike isn't going to be moving either to the left or the right after you're comfortable having uh doing the Hang five where you just gently place your foot on the pedal I mean Peg um you're ready to hop in hopping in is just one smooth motion it it it's going to be scary at first but you're going to find that it's way easier um what I do is you're just going to go at a moderate speed um it's just you're going to want to kind of know how to do a little nose manual I'll show you what I mean you just want to do like you want to be able to do this you put the little nose manual and then you look for your Peg and you just put all your weight back and put it all forward and then it just all works the more you try this trick the better you're going to be it's not a trick that you're going to get perfect overnight just like every other nose manual trick or you just like you didn't learn 180s like that or you didn't learn 360s it's going to take some time if I feel like I'm not going to have enough oomph or whatever you want to say going forward I put a little pressure on this and I push it like this it helps but sometimes it's your enemy sometimes you'll do it too much and you'll fly over the bars if you want to know how to turn while doing a hang five all you have to do is keep the arm in which you're going to be turning straight so if you're going left you just keep your left arm straight and if you want to go right you keep your right arm straight all righty to turn left you just keep your left arm straight and turn right just keep your right arm straight the last thing that you need to know for a hang five is obviously how to get out of it it all goes back to the stationary hang five you want your ass on your seat you want your dominant front foot that you have in your pedal touching your Peg and then you want your opposite foot tiptoeing and you just want to let go like this this and then you want to hop back in it's it's that simple but if you're having really a lot of trouble um catching these one thing that you could do is you could spot for your front pedal what that will do is it will make sure that you don't get shinners even though you should probably be wearing shin pads with these and you should try to catch front foot first so when you're on that Peg and you feel like you're ready to hop out you want to be looking down and trying to spot your front front foot first your front pedal because if you don't catch it and you catch your back what's going to happen is this it's just going to fly up and it's going to hit you in the shin and it's not going to feel good if you're not wearing shin guards or you're going to land one foot and it's going to look like all righty so once once you uh could hop in and you could hop out of the Hang five you're going to want to start bringing it to like little manual pads maybe or maybe that cool kid who tries to do it off loading docks or something one key thing is you want to be very steep till the very end of the curb because or else you're going to case I'm telling you so there's three key things you want to be steep till the very end you want to be going at a moderate speed and you want to have some pressure on your front Peg and there you go you just learned how to hang five if you have any questions guys don't be afraid to comment if you want more howto like this please subscribe hit
