Apple MacBook Pro (February 2011) - Overview and Custom Order

What's Up YouTube: Apple MacBook Pro Update Review

Today, I'm going to take a few minutes to go through what's new with the updated versions of the MacBook Pros that have just been released. Unfortunately, none of the five basic configurations available for purchase come standard with an SSD, which is something I've always wanted in all my Macs.

As a result, I had to place a custom order for my new MacBook Pro, which means it won't be ready until Monday or Tuesday of next week. Once I receive it, I'll be sure to share my unboxing and review with you guys again. You can check out the specifics of each configuration in the description below.

The five basic configurations available for purchase are two 13-inch models and three 15-inch models. It's worth noting that there are no physical changes to the MacBook Pro itself, meaning everything is essentially the same as before. However, under the hood, Apple has made some significant upgrades.

One of the biggest changes is the new processors across the line. The 13-inch model now comes with Core i5 and i7 processors, which are still dual-core but offer a noticeable boost in performance compared to the previous generation. Similarly, the 15-inch models now feature quad-core i7 processors, which should provide even more power and efficiency.

In addition to these processor upgrades, Apple has also introduced new graphics processors for each model. The 13-inch model now comes with Intel HD graphics 3000s, while the 15-inch models feature AMD Radeon HD 6490m (256MB) graphics. While this may seem like a downgrade compared to the previous generation's dedicated graphics, it's worth noting that the new Sandy Bridge processors offer better performance and efficiency.

The big question is how these changes will impact the overall performance of each model. We'll have to wait and see how benchmarks hold up once we get our hands on some real-world tests. On a related note, the 15-inch models are now available with upgraded dedicated graphics options, including an AMD Radeon HD 6750m (1GB) card.

Another notable change is the introduction of Thunderbolt i/o technology, which combines the mini display port and light Peak features into one single port. While this may not be a game-changer just yet, it's definitely an interesting development that could have significant implications for future-proofing your MacBook Pro. And speaking of future-proofing, Apple has also invested in Thunderbolt technology to provide even faster speeds.

Of course, no review of the new MacBook Pros would be complete without mentioning the camera upgrade. The FaceTime camera is now capable of HD video, which should make it easier to connect with friends and family remotely.

Now that I've gone over all the details, let's take a look at my custom configuration. As you can see from the image below, I opted for the standard 13-inch model with an i5 processor, but instead of sticking with the standard hard drive, I upgraded to a 128GB solid state drive (SSD). This may seem like a small upgrade, but trust me when I say it makes a big difference in terms of performance and responsiveness.

Overall, I'm excited to get my hands on this new MacBook Pro and put its capabilities to the test. With the SSD and i5 processor, I'm confident that this will be one of the most powerful laptops on the market. And with Thunderbolt technology and an improved FaceTime camera, it's definitely shaping up to be a top-notch machine.

what they've released and tell you about the version I've ordered now there are five basic configurations that you can pick up in the store today but none of them are a version I wanted I want an SSD in all my Macs I will never buy another computer without an SSD and unfortunately none of them come standard with an SSD uh so I've done a custom order which means I won't see it until Monday Tuesday or Wednesday of next week and of course once I get it I'll do an unboxing and review for you guys again there are five basic configurations there's 2 13in 2 15in and 11 17in I'll give you guys a link in the description below so you can take a look at their specifics but there are four major Hallmark changes with the new Macbook Pro there are no physical changes to the Pro itself it's the same case same body same keyboard track pad ad uh screen everything uh so really everything is done under the hood it's basically a significant spec upgrade so we get new uh processors across the line the 13inch goes from Core 2 Duo to Core i5 and i7 processors they're still core or still they're still dual core processors the 15-in and 17-in now move to quad core uh and they're the quad core i7 processors so they see a huge jump in processing power starting with the 15 in they also get all new graphics processors and of course with the Sandy Bridge you now get Intel's integrated Graphics processors uh the 13-in gets the Intel HD graphics 3000s instead of dedicated graphics like we had with the Nvidia 320m in the previous generations now this is a weaker graphics processor than the Nvidia 320m but with the uh higher with the new generation of CPUs performance should balance out and you should see a better processor performance or better GPU performance with a combination of the new uh Sandy Bridge processors and the weaker uh GPU so we'll see how benchmarks uh scale that out now the 15in are now available with two upgraded dedicated graphics processors the 15 in is available with a standard AMD Radeon HD 6490m at 256 megabytes and you can upgrade to the 6750m at 1 gab and that's uh in the upgraded 15in and the upgraded 17in of course they all get the new Thunderbolt iio or input output standard which uh basically combines the mini display port and the light Peak technology into one input so unfortunately there is only one input at the current time uh but you can imagine as this technology takes off uh we'll start seeing more of them but right now there really is nothing that can take advantage of light Peak so this is really is an investment into the future here so this is sort of future proofing your MacBook and again you get much higher speeds with the Thunderbolt uh technology uh so we'll see how that performs out in the future I certainly look forward to testing it once I have once I have something to test it with and the fourth major change is the fact that the FaceTime camera on the MacBook Pro is now capable of HD uh of course once I get that I'll show you guys how that looks now the MacBook I chose was the standard configuration 13in with the I5 processor so that's the 2.3 GHz processor let's go ahead and select that now here I have the option to build my custom configuration and I'm going to leave everything else alone I'm not going to change my Ram uh but what I want to do here is change my hard drive so I'm going to go from the standard 320 gbyte hard drive and go to the 128 gbyte solid state drive so that adds $225 to my build price and that's good enough for me I don't save a lot to my MacBook Pros everything is saved on my iMac or on my central server storage uh so this is uh more than adequate for me so I don't need a larger one and I largely want the performance of an SSD over the storage so that's all you can certainly add cables I don't need to add cables I have plenty of cable adapters I'm not going to add uh Apple Care at this time I'm not going to add any software either so that's it basic standard configuration plus uh 128 GB SSD so let's go to antart so there we go that's my custom configuration and that's how much I'm paying for it before taxes and shipping so that's all there is guys I really look forward to testing this computer especially with the SSD and the core i5 processor once again this is Detroit Borg thanks for watchingwhat's up YouTube this is Detroit Borg and today Apple
