Welcome to HGTV Handmade with Me Meg! Today, we're at MaryAnn's house in Nashville, Tennessee, where we're all going to make different elements for a tiki party that we'll be attending together. As I always say, one of the most important parts of a party is the table and the centerpiece, which is a great way to get creative and speak to the theme of your party.
To start making our tropical leaves, we'll need some fake leather, scissors, a gold-tip marker, a pencil, and my free printable template. I created this template for you to use as a guide, but feel free to eyeball it if you want! We've got everything laid out on the table, including vinyl rolled out with the good side facing down, so we can trace our template onto our fabric.
Mother Nature has done all the hard work for us by creating these gorgeous tropical leaves. Now, we're just going to mimic their shape and have some fun with it! We can go with one color of green or get creative with different colors - whatever you want is fine by me! Let's start tracing our template onto the fabric. Remember, we're just using this as a guide, so feel free to experiment and make any changes you like.
Once we've traced our template, let's cut out the leaf shape. I always find it easier to cut around the general shape of the leaf, so I can get in there for the details without having to contort my whole body. Make sure to use a nice pair of scissors - if you have fabric scissors, they're perfect for cutting faux leather. And, as a pro tip, sometimes turning the actual leather instead of turning the scissors makes for a cleaner line.
Now that we've got our main shape cut out, let's add some little divots to give it some extra texture and interest. We can certainly leave it as is, but I think adding a little gold will bring in some pizzazz! I'll just go around the perimeter with my felt-tip permanent marker in Gold and add some details.
As we work on our tropical leaves, remember that this is where you can get really creative and go as elaborate as you want. You could mimic the veins of a leaf or do some little gilded edges - there are no rules! I'm going to create a contrast with a darker green for one leaf and mimic the veins with Gold, doing it a little heavier by the stem. I'll also get thinner as I get down here.
Once we've added all our details, these tropical leaves will be the perfect DIY element to add into our layered tropical Bohemian centerpiece. And that's not all - we're making different elements for this tiki party, so stay tuned to see what my girls Julia and Karen come up with!
