The Wine Bottle That's Changing the Game

This bottle is made from 100% recycled pet, what? PET. Pet. It says pet. (laughing) This is letterbox wine. The founders were on the hunt to find an alternative to the inconvenience of waiting in for delivery from a wine club and they wanted something that was practical and particularly environmentally friendly. They found a solution by producing plastic bottles that are 8.4 times less energy to produce than glass bottles, and 40% more spatially efficient when packing onto transporters. This means that for example, 100 lorries full of wine suddenly become 60.

Each bottle weighs 63 grams when it's empty, which is 87% lighter than a traditional glass bottle. With all that in mind, each bottle saves half a kilo of CO2 emissions. The company behind this innovative product has had to address the issue of people perceiving plastic bottles as inferior to glass ones. It seems that some wine drinkers are put off by the idea of drinking from a plastic bottle, even if it's made from recycled materials. However, the founders are confident that their product is high quality and that the perception will change once people try it.

The company has had success with its flat bottle design, which is the same size as a normal bottle of wine but without the shape of glass. Isn't that deceptive? It is deceptive, yeah. I had to look at that. It's won lots of awards for packaging not wine awards. The conversation around this product is mostly about packaging and distribution, although help yourself to a glass is always an option.

Not everyone has been enamored with the idea of drinking from a plastic bottle, but one person saw the benefits right away. I'm not loving the wine personally, but I don't know if we can judge the wine. You could decant. However, this person's house is tiny and space is really valuable, so they couldn't fit a traditional wine rack. Therefore, they had to find an alternative solution. Knowing that they could put these flat bottles alongside their cookbooks was a major problem solved.

If you're ordering wine as part of a wine club, it's common to receive six or twelve wines in your pack. However, trying to store and consume all of those wines at once can be impractical. One potential solution is to order the wines one by one, which could mean receiving multiple flat boxes of wine delivered over time. The idea behind this product seems to be that it would be more convenient for consumers to receive their wine in a single box but with less packaging material.

The founder's vision for this product is not just about convenience but also about reducing waste and the environmental impact of the wine industry. If people start buying more flat bottles, then eventually it could become common practice. The founder believes that it will take time, but it's an exciting possibility.

Would you quaff it back or post it back? I'd quaff it back. Quaff it, quaff it. Look at me now embracing these. You've changed. It seems that some people are open to the idea of drinking from a plastic bottle and even enjoying it. That's a positive development for this innovative product.

Now a blooper. James's haircut has made it onto the front page on searches for hipster haircuts, or something. Hasn't it? I haven't, I don't know. People just keep (mumbles). It seems that James's haircut has become a meme despite having nothing to do with his own style.
