**A Month of Romances: A Review of the Books I Read**
I just finished reading four romance novels that left me feeling a mix of emotions, from enthusiasm to discomfort. As I sat down to write about my reading experience, I couldn't help but think about how much I love discussing books with friends and family, especially when it comes to romance novels.
**Not Enjoying the First Book**
I didn't enjoy the first book that Chelsea recommended. Unfortunately, she didn't recommend it herself, but she did read it and seemed to be saying "to pray" if you liked it, which was a bit off-putting for me. The opening line about black curly chest hair and a grizzled face set the tone for what I felt was going to be a pretty cringeworthy read. The dirty talk in the book didn't sit well with me either, especially when it came to the theme of daddy kink.
The next two books that were recommended by Chelsea, "Tied" and "Torn", also didn't make an impression on me. While I understand that some readers may enjoy these types of stories, they weren't for me. In "Tied", there was a taboo element that made me uncomfortable, and in "Torn", the premise of a girl falling for her brother's best friend was just too much to handle.
**A Different Take on Romance**
However, it wasn't all bad news when it came to romance novels this month. I stumbled upon two books that were a departure from the usual smutty, campy romances that I've been reading lately. "Tied" by Alexa Riley was one of them, and what a difference it made! The emotional development of the main character was phenomenal, and I appreciated how the author handled themes of trauma and abuse in a way that was both realistic and respectful.
I also loved how the male love interest in "Tied" had his own set of trauma, which allowed him to understand the main character's experience in a deeper way. The sex scenes were also handled with care, reflecting the characters' past experiences rather than glossing over them. Overall, I was really impressed with this book and think it's a great example of how romance novels can tackle tough topics in a way that's both engaging and respectful.
**A Second Surprise**
My second surprise came in the form of "Tide" by Alexa Riley, which is actually the brother of the main character from "Tied". I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did, but it really exceeded my expectations. The premise was different, focusing on a girl who's been held captive and abused for 11 years, and her journey towards healing and recovery.
I appreciated how the author handled the heavy themes of trauma and abuse, avoiding the usual tropes and clichés that can be found in some romance novels. Instead, she focused on creating a thoughtful and nuanced portrayal of the main character's experiences, and the way she navigated her relationships with the people around her. The male love interest was also well-developed, and his own trauma added depth to their relationship.
**Audiobooks are My Jam**
I listened to "Tied" almost exclusively on audiobook, which made it an absolute pleasure to read. I'm so glad that I decided to give this format a try, as it really brought the characters and story to life for me. I'm excited to continue listening to audiobooks in the future, especially since they allowed me to focus more on my reading experience.
**Looking Forward to Next Month**
As I look back on my reading experience from this month, I feel grateful for the opportunities that I had to try out new books and authors. While not every book was a hit with me, I'm excited to see what next month brings. I've already started listening to an audiobook, and I'm eager to dive into it and see where it takes me.
**Conclusion**
Overall, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about my reading experience this month. While some books didn't quite hit the mark for me, others really resonated and left me feeling hopeful and excited for the future. As always, I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts with you guys, and I look forward to hearing from you in the comments below.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys welcome back to my Channel today we're going to be doing my December wrap-up so I'm feeling a little weird today work was weird I'm on my lunch break today's Friday and on Saturday a big life event is happening so I am thrilled I'll be sharing it with you guys and like a week or so I'll have a whole video up on it but until then you can just deal with my anxious ramblings as I tell you guys what I read this month I read 12 books this month it's definitely a better reading month that I've had in a really long time so I'm really glad that all these talking books without further ado let's get into it had two five-star reads yes okay anyway the first book I read this month was Mary ink - by Thalia Hibbert I think the best way to describe this one and I think the way in which you should go into this book is knowing that it is basically the book form of a hallmark movie it's very fluffy and kind of cheesy but that's exactly what I wanted I didn't go into this thinking it would be something like highbrow changed my life short of romance it was just a lot of fun basically it's about cash and Bailey Bailey's a barista at a coffee shop and cash is a tattooed I mean he's a tattoo artist but just to her knowledge at the beginning he just does TS tattoos and they're both pretty attracted to each other at first the way that they kind of come together is a homeless man walks into the coffee shop while cash is getting coffee from Bailey and the homeless man is one of Bailey's like acquaintances her friends her boss at the coffee shop is like you can't let homeless people in here daily it's like that's super up cash is also like that super up Bailey's manager like fires her from the coffee shop and cash is like hey I run my own tattoo shop you can come and be the receptionist and love blossoms I thought this was pretty cute there were some issues that I had with it cuz the plot was kind of messy so the homeless guy I mentioned he's brought up a lot in the beginning of the book but it's pretty clear that he's really just a plot device to make the love interest look a charitable which it's a little sighs it's kind of like those videos you see where people are like handing out $20 bills to homeless people it's like okay cool but like why did you record it it just felt a little weird and disingenuous and we don't really get a nice wrap up of his character we don't hear from you again it's kind of dumb also I didn't like this element and I don't really judge tell you Hibert for it because I think it's a hard thing to pull off and especially in a novel of this length I think it's difficult but cash is very reluctant to get into a relationship with Bailey at the beginning and throughout the story he is just like I can't do it I can't love people I'm not able to love people and you are left wondering what the are you talking about I think it would've been more effective you have been like okay if Cash's inner dialogue I guess had explained why he was reluctant to be in love instead of using it as a plot twist at the end oh he has this childhood trauma it I didn't like that I rarely like that in books it just wasn't well executed but I like to it was slow angus it was a christmas story it's just what I needed they like to repin it Bailey is black and she's plus-sized second book I read this month was a five star read it do you want to guess what it is cuz it's Twilight by Stephenie Meyer I am NOT gonna fully review this because I have a whole podcast where I talk in depth about my feelings about this book but I rated it five stars purely on my enjoyment of it and just the experience of the Installer I have let's be real like it's not technically a five star read but I don't give a damn the next book I read was also a five star read she was just going good for me in the middle of the month it was the governess game by Tessa dear I give it five out of five stars this one everybody's like oh my god the Duchess steal so much better than the governess game and I was like okay I didn't have my hopes going into it but it actually ended up being better in my opinion I just really felt for the character some its historical romance which I really usually don't like historical anything whether it's romance or contemporary or like Oracle nonfiction I don't like usually but this was actually really good it's about chase who is in charge of taking care of his two nieces essentially he hires Alex to be his governess to take care of these kids for him because he's ill equipped to do so because he's kind of a boy I almost never enjoy books where kids are used to bring the main love and dress together but the kids and this we're hilarious there were two little girls it opens up on them like ritually killing off their dolls everyday it's just funny and also just really likes chase who became a reformed boy alex is also a budding astronomer I don't know if I said that but she had a lot of personality and a lot of personal goals and I liked that Chase supported her at the very end I mean throughout the book he is supportive of her I love that we stand historical feminist king I don't know if this would have happened actually in history but I appreciated it and I thought it was very cute next book I read was actually a graphic novel and it was fenced by CS passat you have this four out of five stars does it deserve that no but I am Who I am but I describe this as four like gay chaos just kidding nothing guys even happened yet dense volume want is a wrap up for the first four issues it's about a fencing program at a college I think or is it high school I don't know it's about a fencing program out of school and it's good I actually believe it's high school I know it's gonna be a event like sits yes Passat and set up that way but I know it's gonna be a while slow burns really not the word for it it's like probably how miserable it would be to be like burn on the stake is what kind of burn you're getting from her books but I like it I probably should've given it three stars because it really didn't do that much like word the story just kind of set things up but um I liked it the next book I read also another graphic novel it was Mean Girls Club pink donned by Ryan Hache guy and I gave it four out of five stars this is another one that probably didn't deserve four out of five stars but I just genuinely enjoyed it it's a graphic novel that I picked up at my library on a whim cuz it was pink and it's basically fifties pin-up girls fighting misogyny and kicking ass and it's it was just a whole lot of fun it's nothing groundbreaking in terms of the moral story that it was telling the takeaways weren't exactly like highbrow but it was just a lot of fun the art is beautiful and I enjoyed it I thought it was cool and I don't know anyone that's talked about this one so I would look into it if you have not heard of it the next book I read this month was say yes the Marquess also by chested air I give us some three stars it wasn't bad but I think maybe I was just getting kind of burnt out on Tessa dear since I had like read two or four books already jaja steel I think I read at the end of November and so yeah it was just a bunch of historic lows back to back I could probably go my whole life without hearing the word topping ever again it sounds like you're your meal prep pasta I just don't like it can we just say bang in I know that that's like not historically accurate but I think I would have preferred it it was pretty fun it was about a probably plus-size heroine she's described as being bigger than her sisters being strung along for 10 years by a Marquez like she's engaged to him and the wedding just hasn't happened she's getting bored waiting so the marquesses brother comes by and it's like hey let me help you plan this wedding I want you to get married to him like I'm gonna make it happen and I think honestly it was never really explained why he was so committed to getting his brother and his future sister-in-law married she falls in love with the brother surprise surprise it was a lot of fun I liked that she wanted to open her own brewery I thought that was pretty dope like I liked that all of Tessa dares heroines tend to be pretty what's the word empowered they have careers and or they want to have careers I wasn't my favorite it just was my favorite yeah three stars the next one was probably one of my most disappointing reads of this year it wasn't the worst thing that I've read but it was definitely really disappointing and it was Luna in line by Mariana Zapata I give it 2 stars it's another slow burn romance if you don't know Mariana Zapata writes extreme slow-burn romances had to be very like family heavy very heroin heavy as well like you got a lot of background on the main character and her feelings and her emotions and her personal growth which I think's really cool especially if you're kind of like hesitant to read with sex in it but I really didn't like Ripley I didn't like rip I thought he was kind of a douchebag I'm cool for misunderstood characters but he wasn't misunderstood he was genuinely just an for the majority of the book and Luna her story was just too sad for me I think I've ever read Mariana Zapata book where the main character's situation in life is something so horrendous yad like her characters usually have struggles but when i'm reading a romance can 90% of the time i don't want to read about a character just having like a downtrodden existence it's just not fun for me i read romance and I read in general for escapism so for me it's just like please note that one sex scene in it - I didn't like it they on a recliner chair that's not sexy next book I read was deke by Eden Finley I was really excited about this one it's a male-male romance give it four stars she also wrote fake-out I don't remember what the second book was called I he didn't like the second book I didn't think it was good I don't think it lived up to fake-out which was a five star view for me I loved it deke though is really I don't even like it deke was about a hockey player and a journalist and their relationship the journalist pretends to be the hockey player's boyfriend around their family but the reason I liked this one the reason I gave this one four stars was that I think it handled the issue of coming out super well the hockey players out to his entire family and his friends but he is not out to the hockey playing world because he's scared and he doesn't wanna jeopardize his career which is totally valid and I think it was interesting - how supportive his family was but we're trying to like push him to be the first gay hockey player his reluctance to do that and annoyance at his family of likes that his love interest told him though it's okay to do things on your own time and you can experience things how you want to experience them I liked it I found the relationship between the two main characters super convincing understood why they wanted to be together it's not oh yeah I think it comes out like January 8th or 9th the next book I read was a 2-star and it's part of the TJ read-along book club that I do with Dylan every month and I actually have it up on my channel if you want to go and watch that live show but we've read after I do by Taylor Jenkins read that I didn't like it I like just I didn't enjoy it this book it was about a white guy and white and their marital issues I didn't get were together 11 years and then they're having marital issues and they said they were gonna spend an entire year apart to kind of rediscover their love for each other almost like I just personally am cynical I guess having been in your relationship that has been pretty successful I don't think that ignoring your problems really is the way to handle things I liked the other cast of characters like I liked the side characters and I liked the white lady I literally can't remember her name because all of the women in Tochigi it's read books have four names I liked her self-discovery and I liked the things that she was doing in the meantime but to me not a lot happens like I don't know if it's just the Taylor Jenkins reads books aren't gonna work for me or what but I just didn't like this one the next book I read was one that I don't want to say that Chelsea recommended because she definitely didn't recommend it but she read it and I was like to pray if so of course I'm gonna read it was dirty uncle by Alexa Riley when the opening line is about black curly chest hair and a grizzled face you know you're in for a real treat it's about a girl who'd like just graduated high school falling for her stepdads brother the relationship between her mother and the stepdad was only like a month old so by to the words that were used the syntax I didn't like it the dirty talk was select pretty gross to me if you like daddy kink like it might be your thing there was a scene that occurred over the hood of a car in a parking lot after a dance recital that was disturbing to me not a huge fan these next two are really a toward and these ones actually also were not recommended by Chelsea but she talked about them in a video tied and torn by Carrie and Coulomb and talked about torn first cuz it's the first one in the series this one was also one where there was kind of like a taboo element it was about a girl who falls for her brother her brother huh no it was about a girl who fell for her father's best friend her mom and dad had her at like 15 the best friend was also 15 at the time and you get flashbacks of the girl with her father's best friend cuz he's essentially her Godfather so I'm just gonna say Godfather basically you see her grow up with her Godfather but you also see present-day as she is falling for her Godfather and it's interesting to try to reconcile in your head the fact she he raised her kind of and like was there for her when she needed him with the fact that they're moving into a more sexual direction in their relationship I think it's an interesting dichotomy and you can decide for yourself if you read this like whether or not you think it's acceptable or not but I personally found it super camp and I was really rooting for the characters I think it was extremely well done I really think I found a new favorite romance author because this was so artfully done I've been reading just a lot of basic campy romances or Smuts lately and this one was just super different I listened to this one almost exclusively on audiobook which was super fun and then I read a super different one by her called tide which was about the brother the best friend does that make sense I don't think that made me sense he's related in some way to this story essentially this is about a girl who was taken captive and abused for 11 years who escapes with the help of this guy that found her in the woods basically in a hole and they eventually develop a romantic relationship I liked it for a lot of reasons I thought the emotional development of the main character was phenomenal given that I think a lot of dark romances use abuse to glamorize things and also to make the woman not have as much agency and to rely more on the man oh my god thank you for saving me from abuse that wasn't how this story really was set up like yes the male love interest did help her escape but she went through her own personal journey to kind of heal on her own and watching them come together and understand each other was really excellent I also liked that the male character he also had his own trauma so he was able to understand her trauma as well I thought it was just super well done if you're wanting a book that deals with any sort of like heavy topics this was great I also thought that the sex scenes were super reflective as well of the things above the main characters had been through I think oftentimes authors just gloss over the fact that people have been sexually assaulted or abused jump into weird kinky sex I'm not saying that if you've been abused you can't have like a fulfilling sex life so that's the end of this video thanks so much for watching sorry it wasn't saltier I just like enjoyed the books that I read this month I am really excited for this next reading month I've already had two books and it's only January 4th and I'm almost halfway done with this other smutty audiobook so I think I think we're off to a good start in 2019 let me know what your favorite book was in December curious to know also let me know if you've read any of these books and what your opinions we're posting this on Sunday so I hope your Sundays doe my weekend is gonna be chaotic but I am so excited about it and I'm just so excited to share everything with you guys - time so love you guys so much and until next timehey guys welcome back to my Channel today we're acceptable or not but I personally found it super camp and I was really rooting for the characters I think it was extremely well done I really think I found a new favorite romance author because this was so artfully done I've been reading just a lot of basic campy romances or Smuts lately and this one was just super different I listened to this one almost exclusively on audiobook which was super fun and then I read a super different one by her called tide which was about the brother the best friend does that make sense I don't think that made me sense he's related in some way to this story essentially this is about a girl who was taken captive and abused for 11 years who escapes with the help of this guy that found her in the woods basically in a hole and they eventually develop a romantic relationship I liked it for a lot of reasons I thought the emotional development of the main character was phenomenal given that I think a lot of dark romances use abuse to glamorize things and also to make the woman not have as much agency and to rely more on the man oh my god thank you for saving me from abuse that wasn't how this story really was set up like yes the male love interest did help her escape but she went through her own personal journey to kind of heal on her own and watching them come together and understand each other was really excellent I also liked that the male character he also had his own trauma so he was able to understand her trauma as well I thought it was just super well done if you're wanting a book that deals with any sort of like heavy topics this was great I also thought that the sex scenes were super reflective as well of the things above the main characters had been through I think oftentimes authors just gloss over the fact that people have been sexually assaulted or abused jump into weird kinky sex I'm not saying that if you've been abused you can't have like a fulfilling sex life so that's the end of this video thanks so much for watching sorry it wasn't saltier I just like enjoyed the books that I read this month I am really excited for this next reading month I've already had two books and it's only January 4th and I'm
