Nest Learning Thermostat - Unboxing & Review
**Getting Started with the Nest Thermostat**
We begin by going back to our home screen and dialing back in. As we can see, we've been greeted with our Green Leaf, which indicates that this is more economical than usual. Taking a closer look at our brightness settings, we can see that we have several options to choose from, including High, Auto, Low, or Medium. In essence, leaving the settings on Auto means that the screen will automatically adjust its brightness based on the ambient light in the room, similar to how it would work on a Mac or an iPhone.
**Understanding Ambient Light Sensors**
The Ambient Light Sensor feature uses those sensors to detect the ambient light of the room and will adjust the screen brightness accordingly. When we approach the thermostat, it will turn on automatically if it detects our presence. This feature has a subtle click sound when scrolling through its settings, which can be turned on or off as desired. Additionally, users can choose between Fahrenheit or Celsius temperature scales.
**Adjusting Settings**
We now have access to various settings that allow us to adjust our account information, add new accounts, and even change our name. Currently, I'm logged into my Nest account with my ZIP code, date, and time. We can easily adjust our date and time settings within the app. Furthermore, technical information is available for those who want to delve deeper into their device's features.
**Accessing Technical Information**
The "Technical Info" section provides an exhaustive list of information about our thermostat, including wiring hookups, voltage, networks, IP security, and more. This level of detail is impressive and offers users a comprehensive understanding of their device's capabilities. Additionally, we have access to legal information, which includes reset options for the device as well as instructions on how to use it.
**Connecting to the Nest App**
Moving on, let's explore how the app works on devices like the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android. The app provides a seamless experience across all platforms, allowing users to easily control their thermostat from anywhere in the world. By connecting to the Nest website through Wi-Fi or 3G/4G networks, users can access the thermostat's features remotely.
**Using the Nest App**
Upon launching the app, we're presented with the Nest thermostat interface. Tapping on it allows us to adjust the temperature up and down, as well as see real-time information about our ambient temperature. If the ambient temperature exceeds a certain threshold, the thermostat will automatically turn on the heating or cooling system. We can also view historical data about our energy usage.
**Adjusting Settings within the App**
Under the "Settings" section, we can adjust various features, such as fan settings, device names, and even change the temperature scale to Celsius from Fahrenheit. Additionally, users can access technical information and schedule settings, which allow us to set specific times for adjusting the temperature.
**Accessing the Web Interface**
In addition to using the app on our devices, we can also access the Nest thermostat's web interface on a Mac or PC by visiting nest.com and logging into our account. The web interface offers an almost identical experience to the app, with access to all the same features and settings. This level of flexibility is impressive, as users can adjust their thermostat settings from anywhere.
**Two Weeks of Use and Initial Impressions**
After using the Nest Thermostat for about two weeks, I've become increasingly impressed with its capabilities. The device's ability to automatically learn our behavior and adjust its settings accordingly has made it a valuable addition to my home. While the initial investment of $249 may seem steep, the potential savings on energy bills make it well worth considering.
