The Prop Replica: A Closer Look at Hasbro's Staff of Ra Headpiece

As I unbox this prop replica, also known as the Staff of Ra headpiece, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia. in any movie ever famously Indie goes to Maran ravenwood's bar to look for this headpiece of the staff of raw that her father abnar Ravenwood had collected she has it she rescues it from the fire uh and it sets the actions of Raiders of the Lost Arc In Motion um what not a lot of people know is that there were two Raven there were two headpieces made for the film there's this one which has a smooth sided Wings made for the Ravenwood bar sequence and then there's this one that we clearly see when they're having it interpreted um last year I was at Prop Store down in Al and they had one of the original cast uh headpieces that was a crew gift in metal oh was so beautiful to see the original up close and personal I have spent so many years working on this these two are my favorites this is my Ravenwood hero with the correct chain and this is my other hero the uh the the the the the measurement hero uh with its chain I these are my babies these these live in my office at home and then these are all the others that I've picked up over the years this I think is a 24 Karat or 18 karat Relic maker version um they all have swar speed crystals in them this is uh a wonderful peor version of the one that tote burned his hand with so it's only on one side and it's actually signed by bellik in Tannis 1936 this is a great idea I can't remember what these are but someone gave them to me um these are two that I collected because I love that they're oh no this one this is one of my favorites simply because it's bronze and I love that deck sorry Deckard Indie I'm getting my Harrison Ford iconic Classic Movie characters mixed up when Indie says it's a worthless bronze medallion Mary and are you g to give it to me or not I absolutely love this guy but I'm not here to talk about my collection of Staff of raw head pieces because I'm here to tell you that uh there is a product out of this prop and a beautiful prop replica um who made this uh where is where is oh it's dis oh it's Hasbro excuse me Hasbro has made a headpiece of the staff of Rod that looks like it lights up and as I do with all of my favorite props when replicas show up I bought it in fact I bought two of these just to make sure you know you never know you never know and also like sometimes these take off and become like rare as hen teeth so whenever I buy a brand new thing like when the pulse Rivals came out I immediately ordered two um it's just a nice little bit of insurance so I'm going to do an unboxing here of this uh of this piece okay so okay we have here a stand that looks like it's actually it looks like it's Stone that's neat it looks like it's stone with um with sand being brushed away which totally makes sense that's what we saw Indie do he he brushed away and found the hole that the that the rod goes into uh there is clearly a rod crack that there is that just a little slicey poo through the tape excellent oh nice looking that's cool um oh look at that oh right I'm going to need it's got batteries batteries it feels like it has batteries already in it let's see if it has batteries already in it is there a oh there is here we go RTF f m uh put the staff on the thing put the thing in the staff put the thing on the thing and put in the batteries all right let me crack open the battery compartment here ow ow double A okay now there's that I don't need that I don't need that this go over here ah and yeah there's the that and these I don't need and now we get to cut out the staff the headpiece let's see it again one of my Al time favorite props in history in the history of movies um when I I the first time I executed this prop I had a casting from one of the screen used uh from one of the screen used pieces and I spent a tremendous amount of time cleaning that casting up to make some Masters I no longer have any castings of that one all right here we go it's plastic that's one thing uh but first and foremost uh the size yeah the size is right the size is dead on the money actually I mean there's a few small differences uh the bird's head is a little bigger the the wire wrapped around the edge is a little bigger it's a little thicker yeah you can see that looks kind of like a cookie um this apparently lights up oh it's got light pipes going on so there is a is there an orientation it doesn't look like there's an orientation looks like it can go in this Any Which Way one wants or does it go in like this oh okay the staff is in the the St here we go the staff is in the rod oh and there we go I think there's a button I can turn that off oh yes oh that's pretty freaking cool so I would classify this as what this lacks in a refined Fidelity to the original it makes up for in a dramatic lighting presentation because there are no bulbs inside there are no bulbs inside this thing what they've clearly done it looks like is this is molded in three parts there is a clear orange plastic part that is inside and goes all the way out to the edge and that is covered by a clam shell of two opaque pieces so that when you put it all together the lighting comes on there we go and you get this light pipe bringing the light all the way out to the edge that's a non-trivial problem to solve and it makes me forgive how thick it is given that they made it out of three parts look this is you know this kind of thing doesn't give me the experience that I'm looking for that I get from this at the same time I've never been able to buy for a few couple of dozen dollars a headpiece of the staff of raw so if you're jonesing for one you can get this one uh and it's darn good look I keep on saying it's never been that is just lovely it's never been a better time to be a cosplayer and prop collector specifically because uh of the Fidelity that a lot of these companies specifically Hasbro are bringing to their prop replica toys what a delight this is going to go right on the Indiana Jones shelf here thank you guys for joining me for this uh
