The Buffalo Bulletin: A Recap of Five Major Stories from Technobuffalo.com
Hello Shiny Happy People and welcome to the Buffalo bulletin, your trusted source for recapping the latest news and trends from technobuffalo.com. I'm Ashley Ska, and today we're counting down our top stories from the past few days.
Google's President of Product Management for Android, Hugo Bara, has left Google to take a position with Chinese handset manufacturer Xiaomi. Despite leaving Google, Bara will still be dealing with the Android ecosystem, albeit from an OEM side. This move comes as a surprise to many, especially given Bara's great onstage presence at Google IO. It remains to be seen who might step into his role at Elgo, but one thing is certain - Hugo Bara will certainly be missed in Mountain View.
Blackberry has launched a landing page for their upcoming Android and iPhone versions of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). The announcement that BBM would go cross-platform was met with excitement from fans, many of whom had been eagerly awaiting this move. However, the cross-platform launch will only feature messaging at present, with video and voice chat expected to roll out sometime later this year. So, are you on board with using BBM on your Android or iPhone? We'd love to hear your thoughts - have you been convinced by someone in gaming, or do you remain skeptical?
In other news, Nintendo has continued its streak of creating wacky, wonderful, and weird games with the surprise announcement of the Nintendo 2DS. This new handheld console is essentially a 3DS without the 3D functionality or clamshell design, making it look quite bizarre in the process. However, with a price tag of just $129 and a shared release date with Pokémon X and Y, Nintendo might have a hit on its hands. The marketing strategy aimed at young kids could be a recipe for success - after all, stranger things have happened.
Square Enix is having a tough week, to say the least. The launch of their remade MMO Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn has been met with disaster, with gamers unable to log in across the country due to server issues. As a result, Square Enix has completely stopped digital sales until the servers can be brought up to speed. While the game may be an apology to those who played the original Final Fantasy 14, it's not exactly the most effective way to make amends, especially for those who were burned by the first iteration of the game.
Finally, our wild card for the week comes from Tom Hazelton, who reminds us that the Apple iPhone 5S event is likely slated for September 10th. Hazelton runs through what we can expect from the event, including galleries and rundowns of both the rumored iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. If you're interested in staying up-to-date with the latest rumors and speculation surrounding Apple's upcoming products, be sure to check out these resources.
