Welcome to Two Minute Tactics: Analyzing Defensive Mid Block Strategies
Before we dive into today's video, please take a moment to like and subscribe to our channel. If you missed last week's video, click on the link above to catch up on our previous analysis. Today, we're going to explore the tactical approach of a defensive mid block, specifically focusing on Liverpool's style when defending in the middle third.
When it comes to defending in the midfield area, teams often employ a high block or a low block strategy. However, Liverpool's approach falls somewhere in between these two extremes. They adopt a more balanced defense, which allows them to contain space and prevent opposition attacks from reaching their goal. This balance is crucial, as it enables the team to avoid committing too many players forward, thus leaving themselves vulnerable to counter-attacks.
One of the key reasons behind this balanced approach is Liverpool's possession-based style of play. They have a strong midfield trio that can cover a lot of ground quickly, allowing them to press high and win the ball back. This front three consists of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Roberto Firmino. Each player brings their unique skills to the table, making it difficult for opposition teams to find space in midfield.
Firmino, in particular, is instrumental in this setup. His ability to drop deep and win the ball back makes him an excellent midfielder. He's also a threat from midfield, capable of supporting the front three when they press high. When the opposition plays a pass into the center of the field, Liverpool's defenders will shift across, making it difficult for them to find space and play through. This tactical adjustment forces the opposition to look elsewhere for passing options.
The goalkeeper is also crucial in this setup. They need to be prepared to intercept high balls that are being played over the top of their defense. If the ball does travel higher, Liverpool will drop deeper to prevent space behind them. However, if they stay too high and receive a long pass from their own half, they risk leaving themselves vulnerable to counter-attacks.
This balance is also influenced by Liverpool's front three. They have an incredible ability to press high and show the ball into central areas, making it difficult for opposition defenders to get the ball out wide or play a through-ball. When the front three do press high, they're looking to win the ball back quickly, rather than playing long balls over the top of their own defense. This approach allows them to dictate the pace of the game and prevent opposition teams from getting a foothold in midfield.
In summary, Liverpool's defensive mid block strategy is all about balance and flexibility. By adopting a middle ground between high and low blocks, they can contain space and prevent opposition attacks while still maintaining possession and creating scoring opportunities. This approach is made possible by their strong midfield trio and the importance of Firmino in winning the ball back and supporting the front three when they press high.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwelcome to two minute tactics where we look at a recent game and focus on the tactical approach of the team's hi guys today we're going to be looking at a defensive mid block but before we get into today's video make sure to give us a like and subscribe and if you missed last week's video click on the link above so we're gonna be looking at how a defense of mid block sets up so let's get 2 minutes on the clock and let's go okay so looking at the defensive mid block it's a more balanced approach instead of playing a high block more as a as a local trying to press in the final third or a defensive low block where we're trying to prevent the opposition getting anywhere near the box but we're very deep so tardis if it's I've got a more balanced approach we're going to look at Liverpool style when they defend in the middle third obviously we do know that they can high press as well but in the middle fair they have their three sentiment fielders who are all capable of covering the ground quickly so if you have Fubini oh Jordan Henderson James Milner Georgie no mine are them Alex oxlade-chamberlain our sense midfielder they can all cover ground quickly they can get into wide areas to support the fall backs if Sally on my name masala is still quite high and they've also got Roberto Firmino who drops him well and is fantastic at winning the ball back so what we're looking to do is contain space and prevent space in behind for the opposition but we don't want to drop too deep so we're happy for them to have the ball here and then once they come into the midfield third can we look to put them into areas where we can win the ball so when the ball is in central areas we are defending in central areas so we are defending in between the box when the ball goes out wives of the ball goes out right here we all shift the cross making it difficult for the opposition to find any space in here to play through and what we also need is our goalkeeper ready so if the ball does come over the top and it's going towards the box the goalkeepers there to intercept so when the ball does travel higher we will go a little bit deeper to prevent space in behind whereas if we stay too high and the ball is coming into our own half from a height we're leaving space for a running behind and then the chances are that play might be on side so we can't really take those risks it also gives us the ability to drop deeper and to precise over the teammate Liverpool we've got the ability to press higher because of the front three and but also when the front three do press high they want to show the ball into central areas why because they know that's where there's more and that's also where they can win the ball back because of the players in here who are eager to win it back so if a ball gets played to the center back and salad and money are both pressing they will show the ball inside making it difficult for the defender to get it out wide to fall back and if the ball does go inside they will drop in here so that the ball can only go backwards again and this is wherever be it Roberto Firmino can support the press and if it's a three on one or a 3v2 situation the defenders who normally can panic and he can give the ball back to them as well thanks for watching this week video for more content follow me on Instagram Twitter
