A Car Lover's Dream: A Conversation with an Evo Editor

For our editor, having the opportunity to drive some of the world's most iconic and coveted cars is a rare privilege. In this exclusive conversation, we sit down with one of our editors to talk about their favorite cars, from each era, and what makes them truly special.

We started by asking our editor about their thoughts on cars from different eras. "I think the 60s is quite special because everything's so mechanical and you feel every little bump in the road," they said. "There's no power assisted anything, there's just that beautiful engine sound." This love for the raw, unbridled driving experience of older cars led us to ask them which car from each era they would choose if they could have one. The answer was a surprising one: one car from each era.

The conversation quickly turned to what makes these cars so special. Our editor highlighted the 288 GTO as a great start, followed closely by an Enzo for its modern, agile feel. However, their true star of the show is a 1960 Ferrari 250 Short Wheelbase Berlinetta. This car was built in just 45 units and features a unique aluminum-bodied competition model that finished first, second, third, and fourth in class at the 1960 Goodwood Revival. One of these cars, which we were lucky enough to drive, is truly an exceptional machine.

The Ferrari 250 Short Wheelbase Berlinetta is powered by a classic V12 engine producing around 280 horsepower in competition tune, driving through a four-speed manual gearbox. Its chassis may be from the ancient ladder type era, but it's equipped with disc brakes as standard, making it tough, fast, and a joy to drive. When driven on the road, our editor found that this car is "absolutely lovely" to handle, with a steering wheel that feels like a work of art in their hands.

The driving experience is truly physical, especially at low speeds, where the steering requires a bit of force to unlock its full potential. However, as speed increases, the whole car comes together, and our editor found themselves enjoying every moment behind the wheel. The sound of the engine is equally impressive, with the exhaust note growing more satisfyingly as the revs build up.

One of the most remarkable things about this Ferrari is that it was used by a doctor who lived in Florence as his everyday car. It's hard to imagine anyone else using such an exceptional machine for daily driving, but our editor found themselves just as captivated by its presence on the road. The fact that we get to experience even a taste of what it's like to drive this car is truly special.

As we wrapped up our conversation, our editor couldn't help but emphasize how much they love cars and the experience of driving them. When asked if any car could be worth 10 million, they laughed and said it's hard to say. However, one thing was clear: the driving experience is just as valuable as the car itself, and with a drive like this Ferrari, we can see why.

For those who may not get the chance to meet our editor in person or watch them drive one of these incredible cars, we invite you to join us on June 23rd at RM Sotheby's Villa Erba auction. We'll be there live-streaming the event, and it promises to be an unforgettable experience.

Goodwood lagona saer and Spa it's the stuff of Dreams A Different World well today we're getting a little insight into that world with RM sbis on the run up to their next event overlooking the Tranquility of Como talking Ferraris with Auctioneer Max gerado feels pretty damn cool and that's before I jump into something very special indeed to see if the reality lives up to the dream so I came here with my cynical head on because I guess Evo is more about driving cars than beautiful locations and beautifully polished cars but then I saw the cars it just goes out the window so you're around this stuff all the time does it ever wear off when you get into a car and just I mean these things are unreal yeah it it it never ever I guess you get a little bit uh you get a little bit blaz about you forget how much they're worth but it never wears off I mean every time you get into one of these cars it's just it's such a thrill and so so so exciting it it's special every time and do you think the same for the owners I mean there's this perception that these cars are all being squirreled away and put in collections now but are the owners still out there enjoying them and driving them there are it's it's it's really good I mean we always push owners to come and use their cars that's what we want to see but there are some great events and it's these events that are really getting these cars out you know look at Goodwood look at how many Great Cars come out of Goodwood or Pebble Beach or or veste um uh you know there are some great events where these cars do uh do come out they don't all just uh just hide away okay and we've got amazing selection of cars here all Ferraris but I guess to make an auction really magical you need some unique things you need you need a sort of light and shade as as the pace of the auction changes so some of these cars here can you tell us what what they add to the auction what they're going to bring to yourself that's what we we really try and find the special the special cars for example the the the Ferrari the 195 behind you that's really special because it's got competition history it did it did rallies in uh uh in in period you know it's really special to have one of the few California spiders in existence is it's right here or but down to an F40 and a 288 dto together it's not very often you see them te them together and that really adds adds something special to the sale and these modern cars have I mean the values have just gone crazy where where's it going to end do you do you think it's slowing down now yeah I think so I think it's it's it's not it's not just the bubble you know I can see that the collectors are sensible they're not just going to pay any price um there is sense behind the market and I think it's it's actually quite healthy we've reached a happy place in the market I think yeah okay so California it's incredibly rare unbelievably beautiful tell us about it how much is this likely to make so it's going to make somewhere between 11 and 15 million EUR um it's it's said so rare it's considered to be the most beautiful two-seater Ferrari the most one of the most beautiful two-seater cars ever produced that's how special it is and do the people who are bidding for that do they do they turn up and put a paddle up or do they phone in how how does it work some people turn up some people it's interesting you know the great thing about this business is clients are so different you know and they come from all over the world so some people have to be here and have to come and see it some people will send somebody we've got clients that'll come and buy a car like this without ever seeing it just be on the phone and you know I've done my research I know what it is I just spit on it okay I'd like to ask you you you drive all these cars I'm in a lucky position I get to drive a lot of stuff but not from all the ages like you do what what for you is the magical period what would you have if you could have anything I think you know the 60s is uh is quite is quite special because everything's so mechanical and you feel feel every little bump in the road there's no power assisted anything there's you feel that beautiful engine sound so I think that's really sort of a a magical time but then again you might ask me tomorrow and I might say to you you know F40 let's go you know let's kick get those turbos kicking in so so it depends on the day I need one from each era I think you're right one car from each era sounds pretty appealing doesn't it the 288 GTO would be a good start maybe an Enzo for that modern super agile Ferrari feel but for me the star of the show is a 1960 250 short wheelbase Berlinetta it was the one we had to to drive this jawdropping car is an driving experience and the way it looks I have to say what what a gorgeous car but let's try and do that so we've got this three ler V12 which really needs some revs but sound so good when you get it RIT it's got 260 280 horsepower the sad truth is a uh a modern hot hatchback would kill it but that that doesn't matter because the theater of this car is so good and the feel and the feedback you can actually drive it much quicker than you would think you can just really enjoy it we try and break down the individual elements of this the steering absolutely lovely in this thin Rim wooden steering wheel feels fantastic to hold the breaks have really really firm pedal feel not pushing them hard today but just feel coming back through this car and the brake pedal's part of that just feels of needs a bit of force a bit of bullying you can't be weedy with it you just got to go for it but and the little glimpses when I can get up to speed the whole car just it all comes together I mean you
