Always-Listening Technology - My Thoughts

The Power of Technology: Embracing Innovation and Concerns

As I always check in everywhere I go, whether it's to my favorite Wawa or other places, I've noticed that people are starting to get comfortable with technology that was once considered invasive. My mom, on the other hand, is not as open-minded about this issue, but she's warming up to it. Another friend of mine used to be paranoid about privacy concerns, but now she checks in at various locations without a second thought.

I must admit, I'm a technology geek, and I'm always excited to explore new innovations. The latest trend that caught my attention is the concept of "always listening" technology. This feature, which allows devices to listen for specific phrases or commands, has sparked both excitement and concern among users. For me, it's amazing to think about how far technology has come, and I'm eager to experience it firsthand.

Microsoft's Xbox One is a great example of this innovation. Although some might claim that it's not as groundbreaking as Microsoft would like to make it out to be, I believe that the company is pushing the boundaries of what we consider normal. The always-listening feature is just one aspect of a larger ecosystem that aims to revolutionize the way we interact with our devices.

On the other hand, Sony's PlayStation 4 takes a more cautious approach. While still innovative in its own right, the PS4 seems to be playing it safe compared to the Xbox One. I'm not saying that this is necessarily a bad thing; sometimes, caution can be beneficial. However, as an individual who thrives on innovation and exploration, I believe that we need to push ourselves to try new things.

The example of Four Square comes to mind. Just 10 years ago, checking in at a place like Wawa would have been unimaginable. Now, it's almost normal behavior. This is the kind of trend that we can expect to see with always-listening technology: people will become accustomed to it over time.

I'm not naive to the fact that there are concerns about privacy when it comes to this technology. Some might worry about the potential for devices to listen in on private conversations or share sensitive information without consent. However, I believe that these risks can be mitigated with proper design and implementation.

For instance, Microsoft's Xbox One uses a specific phrase to activate the always-listening feature. This way, users can ensure that they're not inadvertently sharing their voice recordings. Similar systems are in place for other devices like Moto X and Google Glass, which allow users to say a specific phrase (e.g., "Okay, Google") to activate the listening feature.

While I understand why some people might be apprehensive about this technology, I'm excited to see where it takes us. The potential benefits of always-listening technology are vast, from improved convenience and efficiency to enhanced user experiences.

As someone who's not narrow-minded when it comes to this topic, I want to assure readers that my concerns are genuine. However, I also believe that we need to be open-minded and willing to adapt to new technologies. The future of innovation is uncertain, but one thing is clear: we'll be relying on technology to shape our lives in ways both subtle and profound.

In conclusion, the power of technology lies not only in its ability to transform our daily lives but also in its capacity to challenge our perceptions and assumptions. As we continue to explore the world of always-listening technology, it's essential that we approach this trend with a critical eye, weighing the benefits against the potential risks. By doing so, we can harness the full potential of innovation and create a future where technology enhances our lives without compromising our values.

the drw by now this one and today's question comes from Seth Landry I don't think Seth included any links no he didn't but Seth if you're watching this video just comment below and I'll take care of it all right so Seth says hi David I myself am also an Xbox guy although I do enjoy Sony's the company and their too my question for you is are you concerned about the always on Xbox One during the time when government listening and NSA topics emerge and then he goes on to say I would be curious if anyone would be capable of watching us in our homes through our connect camera I have nothing to hide as I'm sure many don't but what are your thoughts thanks thank you Seth for the excellent question now I already talked about the Xbox One a couple months ago and actually this question was posted on June 11th 2013 but I did a search on my own website over at davidf frank.com for always listening because I wanted to finally make a video on my thoughts about always listening but not just regarding the Xbox one I just want to talk about technology in general and the direction we seem to be heading in okay so I got this idea yesterday when I was watching while reading a review on the verge or Gizmodo one of those sites of the new Moto X the phone actually looks pretty cool uh you guys know me I'm not an Android guy but from what I can tell the phone looks pretty sweet and one of those features included in the Moto X is the always listening functionality of Google Now now this is just like Google Glass but instead of saying okay glass for any phones that support this always asending technology for Google Now you simply say Okay Google now and then the phone instantly wakes up and is listening to your commands Okay so if you ask me I think this technology is a break through I love the idea of always listening technology seriously I do I freaking love it so much I just think it's the coolest thing all right so backing up a bit let's talk about previous products that introduced this technology and then build our way up to things like the Moto X and the Xbox one now I do want to say Google Glass I'm not sure if Google invented this technology of you know always listening I'm sure it's been around for a while actually yeah my connect actually has it right now if you just say Xbox it's listen although it's not listening right now cuz it's technically off and that's one thing I I love about the Xbox one is that it's technically always on and always listening all right so anyway let's get back to Google Glass real quick and then I'll talk about I just love this stuff so much okay so if you tap your glasses well if you're wearing Google Glass okay glass take a picture and then it takes the picture I'm just looking up here pretending I have it guys I want glass so freaking bad seriously it actually kind of drives me crazy and then of course there's things like Okay Glass call my mom or Okay Glass what is today's weather Okay Glass record a video and then you can swipe through the menus and it it's just freaking fascinating as hell okay now with Google Glass it's hard to argue this Google Glass needs that always listening feature I mean without the always listening okay glass you know phrase then it's pretty much pointless you'll be scrolling through endless menus with a screen this small when in theory I believe it appears pretty large I have yet to use a glass but I'm pretty sure I will when I go to CES 2014 can't wait but still Guys Without always listening technology something like Google Glass would not be possible now I understand some people don't like the old Zing technology trust me I fully understand why you know between Google Glass the Moto X the Xbox One and I'm sure many other future products will'll see at least within the next two years um it's going to be kind of the new normal thing all right so with something like this I like to relate it along the lines of checking in the four square people used to be so freaking paranoid about checking into a mall checking into Wawa checking into their business because they would fear of people stalking them and just seeing everywhere they go but nowadays it's kind of a normal thing I mean look at my dad he's checking into everywhere he goes me I always check in the Wawa my mom not so much but another friend of mine I'm not going to say her name but she used to be kind of paranoid about privacy concerns but now she checks in the places I mean it's one of those technologies that people will Embrace over time but for now it just kind of freaks them out a bit but you know me I'm a technology geek I'm very open-minded with this sort of thing so this new technology doesn't scare me if anything it amazes me I mean it really really does and then going to something like the Xbox one without the always listening functionality the Xbox one isn't as Innovative as Microsoft is claiming it to be but thankfully they are pushing this feature they're not kind of playing as safe like Sony is with the PS4 which isn't a bad thing I mean I'm sure I'm sure the PS4 is going to kick ass but I really really like the fact that Microsoft is actually trying something different with the Xbox One and they're kind of pushing the privacy concerns of course I mean that in the best way possible because guys you know what this is something we're going to have to get used to I mean if no other company pushes certain features on us then we're going to get bored with the current things we have and we're never going to try new things I mean again look at Four Square 10 years ago today would you ever dream of checking in a place like Wawa and sharing it with 19,000 plus followers of course not but nowadays it's kind of a normal thing to do well I mean we share our pictures of our kids our babies our family our boyfriends and girlfriends we share so much stuff online so I really don't see the harm in this kind of Technology always listening for our voice and also I should say things like the Xbox One the Moto X and Google Glass you shouldn't really have privacy concerns because they're specifically listen uh listening for that one specific phrase I just said specific twice didn't I for instance Xbox One just say Xbox I believe that's how it works I don't have an Xbox one yet but in theory that's how it's going to work and just like Moto wax you say Okay Google Now or for Google Glass you say Okay Glass and then you say our phrase I think it's awesome I don't think it's anything to be paranoid about but I do understand why others are concerned I mean I'm not narrow-minded with this topic I do see privacy concerns it's just for me personally I'm very open-minded I share my life as it is and quite honestly I am hyped as hell for the Xbox One for Google Glass and even the Moto X I mean I'm not getting the Moto X but the fact that the technology is out there I think it's awesome that we finally reached that point in technology and how technology is working for us so there you go Seth those are my thoughts on the future of technology in terms of always listening again I'm going to repeat myself I just think it's the coolest thing ever and I really can't wait to try it out for myself and now guys since today isn't ask a question video that means you do get another free audio book over at Audi trial.com thecreative one click
