Hands-on - Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Edition - charge multiple devices at once!

The Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Wireless Charging Dock: A Convenient and Thoughtful Solution

I've had my hands on the Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Wireless Charging Dock for a couple of months now, waiting for Apple to release their second-generation AirPods with integrated wireless charging. While that hasn't happened yet, I'm excited to share my experience with this product once it becomes available.

One thing I love about Nomad's products is the build quality, and the Base Station is no exception. The aluminum construction feels premium, and the leather wireless charging surface looks sleek and modern. But what really sets this dock apart is its well-designed charging surface, which features three coils that allow you to charge multiple devices in multiple locations. This means you can use it with your iPhone, Apple Watch, or even AirPods, all at the same time.

When I plug in the Base Station, I notice that the back cover is made of plastic, but the addition of non-slip rubber strips helps keep the device secure on a surface. The barrel plug for the power adapter is also present, and it's detachable, allowing you to switch out regional plugs if needed. Inside the box, Nomad provides an illustrated explainer showing how to charge devices with the three charging coils.

I start by sitting my iPhone down on the dock and observing that it uses the middle charging coil. If I place it on the right side, the dock will use the right coil instead. This is made possible by the LEDs on the front of the dock, which indicate which coil is in use. It's a simple yet clever design.

Next, I grab my Apple Watch and sit it down on the dock. To my surprise, the watch charges wirelessly without the need for any additional cables or adapters. The Base Station supports 7.5-watt fast wireless charging, making it an ideal solution for keeping your devices charged on the go.

One feature that really stands out to me is the little rubber piece that prevents the Apple Watch from crashing into the aluminum surface of the dock when placed down. It's a thoughtful touch that shows Nomad has put careful consideration into the design of this product. Additionally, the dock features an ambient light sensor that automatically dims the LEDs when charging in a dark environment, preventing any harsh light pollution.

Of course, there are some downsides to consider. One obvious drawback is the lack of iOS integration, which means you won't be able to charge your devices wirelessly from the dock without using an external adapter or cable. I'm not sure why Nomad didn't include this feature, but it's something to keep in mind if you're expecting seamless wireless charging.

Another issue is that the Base Station is currently temporarily sold out, and I'm not sure when it will become available again. It's unclear whether Nomad is waiting on Apple to release their second-generation AirPods with integrated wireless charging, or if there are other factors at play.

Finally, the price of the Base Station is $120, which may seem steep to some users. However, considering the quality and features of this product, I believe it's a fair price. After all, Nomad has consistently delivered high-quality products that are both functional and stylish, and this dock is no exception.

Overall, the Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Wireless Charging Dock is a convenient and thoughtful solution for charging your devices on the go. With its premium build quality, well-designed charging surface, and thoughtful features like the rubber piece and ambient light sensor, it's an excellent addition to any wireless charging setup. While there are some downsides to consider, I believe the benefits of this product make it a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to stay charged on the move.
