The Tiniest Little Video Game System: A First Look at the Panic Play Date
The Panic play date is the tiniest little video game system that I've seen in a long time, and it's finally available for those who pre-ordered it. This little yellow crank Ena thing has been expected for years, and it's like a little crazy Game and Watch created for Indie Games. The Panic play date is priced at $179, but apparently, right now, pre-orders are backed up to 2023 if you happen to actually order one.
When we opened the box, not surprisingly, it's pretty minimal, and it's a really cute package with a little kind of welcome pic Panic play dat logo on it. Inside the box, there's really not much there - just a little system and a USBC cable also yellow, that's it. That's the entire package; it's kind of invitingly minimal. There is a little mini instruction manual that tells you what to do how to set it up basically the Panic plate 8, which kind of like connects through to uh the Panic website and and downloads things but but that's it. I mean, if you want to see the animation how it works, um, the little startup animation is super Charming there's all this little fun music and stuff.
This is just a first peak at what we have here - it's like an early peek into what this thing can do. If you want to see more of what Panic play date has to offer, stay tuned for our upcoming full review. We'll dive deeper into what's inside the box, what it looks like next to other gaming handhelds, and all the details we couldn't fit in this initial first look.
For comparison, let's take a look at its size - if you remember that Game Boy uh R from way back in 2005, that super tiny one actually is a little bit smaller but it's also close to the size of the Nintendo gaming watch released last year. There are these little $50 things that you can play retro games on - the Zelda one or the Mario one before that, which are essentially portable fidgety gaming devices.
The Panic play datee has 24 games that will be downloaded over time onto it, and you basically buy as part of the package and get as these little surprise gifts. It's a totally different proposition compared to what we have now - that is why this game console has garnered so much attention among gamers. The design of this thing is really cool; it feels comforting and analog with the crank on the side, and the buttons feel great.
The Panic play date also features a headphone jack and a USBC Port which will charge it up for about 8 hours of battery. You can at least play with it with headphones on, something you can't do on a Game and Watch.
