T Mobile G2 Review (www.TheUnlockr.com)

first up we have the T-Mobile G2 6.39 megabytes down 1.6 up let's run it again 6.51 down 1.31 up one last time 5.73 down 1.55 up now we have a regular my touch little under 2.5 megabytes down little under one Meg up little under three Megs down little under one Meg up little under 2.3 Megs down and a little under one Meg up okay next we'll test the Nexus One the L 2.1 Megs down little under half a Meg up little under 2.1 Megs down little under half a Meg up and again about two Megs down under half a Meg up so here's the part of the review where I get to tell you the things I like and don't like about the device first we'll start with some of the things I do like I like the fact that T-Mobile and HTC have finally come out with a high-end Android device with a full physical keyboard it's about time the keyboard itself I like because of the nicely spaced keys you can actually type pretty quickly on here without hitting the wrong keys accidentally uh also on the keyboard I like the hot keys that were added down here at the bottom you can set these to any application you want or even calling a contact Etc um through the application that comes with the phone I like it cuz I found that it actually does get me to some of my applications a lot faster faster than me searching through my menu to get to them I also recommend setting these keys to applications that you're going to be using the keyboard for anyway since you already have the keyboard open so I also like the styling of the device from the brush aluminum backside to the optical trackpad and even the Z hinge now at first I didn't really like the Z hinge uh but it kind of grew on me and now I don't seem to mind it too much uh the CPU speed is about 800 MHz but the phone is pretty responsive and as our CPU benchmark test showed it actually performs a little bit better than some of the other phones that have a higher clock speed the last thing that sets this phone apart from other phones is the new high-speed HSPA data speeds that it gets from T-Mobile during our HSPA test we actually showed that this phone gets about double the speed compared to some other phones that don't have HSPA plus enabled okay now for some of the dislikes first disliked is the LCD screen now you may or may not know but HTC started putting LCD screens on all of their newer phones and were forced to switch to LCD when the manufacturer of AMOLED screens Samsung had a big shortage now it's no coincidence that this shortage for Samsung happened right before Samsung released their own line of Galaxy S phones here in the US all with AMOLED screens but because of this most of the newer phones from HTC have this LCD screen instead of AMOLED and the G2 is no exception so I can't help but feel like I wish the shortage didn't happen so that I could have an AMOLED screen instead of LCD and as you saw in our tests the AMOLED screen is a lot more vibrant than the LCD okay another thing I didn't really like too much about the phone is the Z hinge now I know I said it grew on me and it did but I still can't help part of me feels like this is going to get looser and looser with time maybe like a magnet in here could have fixed this who knows okay the last thing I dislike about the phone isn't something your average consumer is really going to know anything about um it's basically the fact that just like the Motorola Droid X HTC has put some blocks on this phone to stop you from loading custom roms and getting root access and those kinds of things uh again if you're your average consumer you have no clue what I'm talking about right now and as such it's not a big deal to you but for people like me and other ROM junkies that want to load custom roms put our own stuff on the phone Etc it's going to be pretty hard to do now it's not to say it's impossible but because of these extra steps that HTC put in the phone just for this reason it's going to be a lot harder to do okay

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys this is David from the unlocker.net workk called HSPA plus okay first we'll start off by talking about some of the technical specs of the phone it's got an 800 MHz qualcom processor with a separate Graphics chip it also has 512 MB of ram 4 gigs of internal storage and bundled with the phone is an 8 gig micro SD card uh as far as connectivity is concerned the phone is bluetoo bluetoo Wi-Fi BG and N uh and it also has not only 3G but T-Mobile's new HSPA plus 3G which is their new highspeed Data Network we'll get into what that means a little bit later and also do some tests to see what actually that equates to as for the hardware you can actually see we have a 3.7 in super LCD screen with a 480x 800 resolution we have four touch sensitive buttons along the bottom of the screen um which seems to be come uh becoming a standard on on HTC phones one that I would actually like to see gone um I prefer real buttons these touch s buttons just never work exactly the way you want them to and sometimes they're just not very responsive uh but beneath that we have a touch sensitive trackpad for use navigating menus uh squish websites or through text when you need to go back and and delete a word that you just couldn't really spell very well one thing I am happy to see on the phone uh is a dedicated ated camera button I still think this is the fastest way to get the camera out and it's the most comfortable and easiest way to use the camera since you're kind of used to doing that anyway it does offer push down a little bit to autofocus and push down all the way to take the picture okay on the opposite side of the phone we have a micro USB uh which is used for charging and also to transfer data on the phone we also have our volume rocker for raising the volume and lowering the volume on the back we have a 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash and we also have this brushed aluminum battery cover which I quite like okay one of the other big features about this phone is that it is one of T-Mobile's first high-end Android phones with a full cty keyboard the Cy keyboard is taken out not by sliding um by kind of lifting the top half of the phone and then once it gets halfway it kind of just falls into into place and locks into place like that same thing goes for when closing it once it gets about halfway it just kind of Falls and locks into place um doesn't actually lock you'll notice can actually hold the phone by the back so it's kind of just gravity doing the work uh it's a very nice keyboard the keys are nicely spaced uh they're slightly raised um which makes them easy to use uh there are also a few added features onto this keyboard that other HTC keyboards didn't have which are the hot Keys these these three buttons can be programmed via an app inside the phone that comes with the phone to launch certain things for example voice search like I've set it up for again you can set it up to whatever you want uh messaging email Etc okay I'm not going to delve too far into the software of the phone since it is vanilla Android on the device if you're not familiar with Android phones feel free to click the link under this video on our site to be taken to an Android overview showing you all of the basic features Etc what I will say is that this phone is not running any proprietary user interface like HTC Sense or Motorola Blur Etc it is running regular Android like its predecessor the G1 it runs pretty smoothly in regular use as you can see okay to run a quick benchmark test we're going to use an app that you can actually download from the market yourself if you want to test your phone it's called quadrant standard it's free and we're going to click run full Benchmark and let it run okay and then here we can see our results uh even though it does have the lower processor the 800 MHz compared to the Nexus 1's 1 GHz and it's running the same operating system Android 2.2 it still has a nice chunk uh of performance better than the Nexus one so we're going to bring in a few different Android devices to just get a size comparison for all four here we have the Sprint hero the old T-Mobile My Touch the Nexus one and and our T-Mobile G2 so you see screen sizewise it's identical pretty much to the Nexus One Tad larger than say the hero or the My Touch which have the same screen size still a little bit thicker if you can tell from there tad bit thicker than the Nexus One about the same as the hero I'd say and same as the my touch so another thing to compare while we have all these phones together is the screens now all phones have been turned brightness all the way up uh the screen has been set to not time out and we're all having the same exact background now you can tell going from left to right we have here the G2 with super LCD screen we have the Nexus one with its am OED screen and then our two lower-end phones the my touch and the hero with their regular LCD screens so you can tell just by looking at it in the camera that the AML screen is the most vibrant of the four then would probably come the super LCD followed by the two regular LCDs here we are testing out the new T-Mobile G2 it's T-Mobile's first phone to run on their new high-speed Data Network called HSPA plus now we didn't want coverage to be an issue in doing this test so we figured what better place to do the test than right underneath a cell phone tower okay first up we have the T-Mobile G2 6.39 megabytes down 1.6 up let's run it again 6.51 down 1.31 up one last time 5.73 down 1.55 up now we have a regular my touch little under 2.5 megabytes down little under one Meg up little under three Megs down little under one Meg up little under 2.3 Megs down and a little under one Meg up okay next we'll test the Nexus One the L 2.1 Megs down little under half a Meg up little under 2.1 Megs down little under half a Meg up and again about two Megs down under half a Meg up so here's the part of the review where I get to tell you the things I like and don't like about the device first we'll start with some of the things I do like I like the fact that T-Mobile and HTC have finally come out with a high-end Android device with a full physical quity keyboard it's about time the keyboard itself I like because of the nicely spaced Keys you can actually type pretty quickly on here without hitting the wrong Keys accidentally uh also on the keyboard I like the hot keys that were added down here at the bottom you can set these to any application you want or even calling a contact Etc um through the application that comes with the phone I like it cuz I found that it actually does get me to some of my applications a lot faster faster than me searching through my menu to get to them I also recommend setting these keys to applications that you're going to be using the keyboard for anyway since you already have the keyboard open so I also like the styling of the device from the brush aluminum backside to the optical trackpad and even the Z hinge now at first I didn't really like the Z hinge uh but it kind of grew on me and now I don't seem to mind it too much uh the CPU speed is about 800 MHz but the phone is pretty responsive and as our CPU benchmark test showed it actually performs a little bit better than some of the other phones that have a higher clock speed the last thing that sets this phone apart from other phones is the new high-speed HSPA data speeds that it gets from T-Mobile during our HSPA test we actually showed that this phone gets about double the speed compared to some other phones that don't have HSPA plus enabled okay now for some of the dislikes first disliked is the slcd screen now you may or may not know but ACC started putting am OED screens on all of their newer phones and were forced to switch to slcd when the manufacturer of AMOLED screens Samsung had a big shortage now it's no coincidence that this shortage for Samsung happened right before Samsung released their own line of Galaxy S phones here in the US all with AMOLED screens but because of this most of the newer phones from HC have this slcd screen instead of AMOLED and the G2 is no exception so I can't help but feel like I wish the shortage didn't happen so that that way I could have an Amed screen instead of slcd and as you saw in our our tests the Amo LED screen is a lot more vibrant than the slcd okay another thing I didn't really like too much about the phone is the Z hinge now I know I said it grew on me and it did but I still can't help part of me feels like this is going to get looser and looser with time maybe like a magnet in here could have fixed this who knows okay the last thing I dislike about the phone isn't something your average consumer is really going to know anything about um it's basically the fact that just like the Motorola Droid X HTC has put some blocks on this phone to stop you from loading custom roms and getting root access and those kinds of things uh again if you're your average consumer you have no clue what I'm talking about right now and as such it's not a big deal to you but for people like me and other ROM junkies that want to load custom roms put our own stuff on the phone Etc it's going to be pretty hard to do now it's not to say it's impossible but because of these extra steps that HTC put in the phone just for this reason it's going to be a lot harder to do okay and that's it for our quick phone review of the G2 as always please feel free to leave your comments and questions on the site uh and thanks for watching\n"
