Handy Tech Under $100 Episode 8 - Just Plain Cool Stuff

A Hands-On Review of Various Tech Products

One of the devices that caught our attention was the Seagate Enterprise Drive, which boasts drive compatibility as one of its strong points due to its native 4K sector. This feature makes it stand out from other devices, but there is one potential drawback - the Dual drive model does not have separate power switches for each bay. This means that adding or removing a single drive will momentarily disconnect the other bay. While this may be inconvenient, it's worth noting that no dock handles this situation any differently.

In contrast, the TechKeys products were quite unique and fun to play with. The company started with a concept of ultra-small driverless programmable keys for PCs or Macs. The original idea was to create a business card-like PCB with a microcontroller that would spit out information about the manufacturer when pressed. However, this led to the development of a more advanced product - the TechKeys programmable card, which features a 7x24 LED array built into the board. This allows for easy reprogramming by holding down the "program" button for 2 seconds and selecting the key you want to program using the arrow keys.

The Programmable Card is not a finished product intended for end-users, but rather an experimental device that showcases the capabilities of TechKeys' technology. The company has also created an exposed PCB model that can be purchased along with cool keycaps. While this device may not be durable, it's safe to use due to its low amperage 5-volt power supply.

However, the true star of the show is the One Keyboard and the Three Keyboard, which were inspired by these earlier experiments. The concept behind these devices is simple - a sweet little aluminum housing from nude CNC with a PCB mounted to the bottom that gives you either one or three fully programmable keys. These keys can be used for a wide range of applications, including single inputs, frequently used passwords, program-specific shortcuts, and long macro chains.

The process of programming these devices is surprisingly easy, as demonstrated in the video footage we captured while testing the StableCam mobile accessory. The device works by sliding your phone into one of two slots, depending on its thickness, and then holding it horizontally with the grippy ring. By adjusting the weighted end to balance the device, you can achieve smooth footage that rivals professional equipment.

The StableCam is a game-changer for anyone looking to improve their mobile video production capabilities. It's small enough to fit in a bag, easy to use, and offers incredible results that are on par with high-end cameras like the Galaxy S6 Edge. While it may take a minute or two to balance each time you start filming, the end result is well worth the extra effort.

In conclusion, we've had the pleasure of reviewing several unique tech products that showcase innovative design and functionality. From the Seagate Enterprise Drive to the TechKeys Programmable Card, each device has its own strengths and weaknesses. However, it's clear that these companies are pushing the boundaries of what's possible with technology, and we can't wait to see what they come up next.

Full Disclosure

As is our tradition, we'd like to provide full disclosure about the products we've reviewed today. The Seagate Enterprise Drive was provided by Thermal, but we already owned one that we had purchased for ourselves several years ago. The TechKeys Programmable Card and StableCam were also provided by the manufacturer without any obligation to review them.

We want to emphasize that these devices are not finished products intended for end-users, but rather experimental prototypes that showcase the capabilities of the technology. If you're interested in purchasing any of these products, we recommend visiting their websites or forums for more information.
