Audi R8 V10 vs Audi TT RS - autocar.co.uk

The Audi R8 V10: A Monster of a Sports Car

This is the Audi R8 V10, a car that has left many experts claiming it is Audi's best sports car ever made. With its 518 BHP Lamborghini engine, this beast of a machine costs £110,000 and is sure to leave even the most seasoned drivers in awe. But how does it compare to other cars like the TT? To find out, we'll be putting the R8 through its paces on the twisty roads of Chobham's infamous "Snake" track.

As we set off, our driver Tim Dixon, Audi Auto Car's production editor, takes the wheel of the R8. He's a seasoned driver with a passion for speed, and he's here to see if he can stay with the TT on this challenging course. With nearly 200 horsepower more than the TT, there's no doubt that the R8 has a significant advantage in terms of straight-line speed. But how does it handle on twisty roads? Tim is determined to find out.

As we begin our journey on the Snake, Tim puts the pedal to the metal, feeling the R8 come alive under his hands. The car's composure and handling are impressive, gliding through even the tightest corners with ease. Meanwhile, the TT struggles to keep up, its understeer making it difficult for Tim to maintain a consistent pace. But despite its lack of grip, the TT is still capable of keeping up with the R8 on some of the faster sections of the course.

However, as we approach the jump, the TT's limitations become more apparent. The car is unable to quite sort out its understeer, and Tim finds himself struggling to stay in control. Meanwhile, the R8 handles the jump with ease, its precision handling and advanced technology allowing it to maintain speed and composure even at high speeds.

As we continue on our journey, Tim raises an interesting point about the value of a car like the TT. While it may not be able to match the performance of the R8, it's certainly more affordable, with a price tag significantly lower than that of the Audi supercar. But is there something else that justifies spending more money on the R8? Tim isn't convinced, and he wonders whether the extra £60,000 can justify the difference in performance on everyday roads.

To answer this question, we'll be putting both cars through a series of tests designed to highlight their differences. First up, we'll be looking at straight-line acceleration. With the R8's 518 BHP engine and the TT's relatively modest 200 horsepower, there's no doubt that the Audi will take an early lead in this department.

With Tim pushing the R8 hard through second gear, it quickly becomes apparent that there's a significant gap between the two cars. As they move through to third gear, the difference only grows wider, with the R8 pulling away from the TT by several yards in just 5 seconds. This is a clear indication of the R8's superior acceleration and performance.

In conclusion, the Audi R8 V10 is indeed a monster of a sports car, capable of delivering exceptional performance and handling on twisty roads. While it may not be the most practical or affordable option, those who value speed and excitement above all else will certainly find something to love in this incredible machine. But for those who prioritize everyday usability and affordability, cars like the TT remain an attractive alternative – one that won't break the bank but still delivers plenty of thrills on the road.
