The Sound Leak and Sound Isolation Test: A Consumer's Perspective

As an average consumer, I've learned to appreciate the importance of sound isolation in headphones. Audio-Technica sent me their ATTH Ws 70s headphones to put through my own brand of testing - The "Girlfriend Test". This unique approach involves simulating common complaints that girlfriends might make while wearing headphones, and seeing how well they can block out those sounds.

First up, I conducted the sound leak test. To do this, I played music at three different volume levels: 50%, 75%, and 100%. The goal was to see how much sound leaks from the headphones at each of these volumes. With a quiet background, I started with 50% volume and listened for any sounds that might be escaping. To my surprise, I heard absolutely nothing - pretty good!

Next, I cranked up the volume to 75%, which is usually where sound leak issues start to become noticeable. But in this case, I only heard slightly - a bit more than what I expected at 50% volume. This was reassuring to see that the headphones were doing a great job of isolating sound at higher volumes.

Finally, I tried the headphones at 100% volume, where most headphones tend to leak more sound. But again, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't too bad - not as good as some other headphones we've tested, perhaps, but still quite acceptable. It's clear that Audio-Technica has done a great job with the sound isolation on these headphones.

Now, it's time for The Girlfriend Test! In this part of the review, I'll simulate common complaints that girlfriends might make while wearing headphones, and see how well they can block out those sounds. With my hair tied back and put over one ear, I'm ready to get started. First up: complaining about the way I look. I stood in front of a mirror, frowning at myself, and then looked around for someone to complain to. And then... I spoke.

"I hate the way I look today," I said, trying to sound as dramatic and exasperated as possible. "I feel like I look so fat." I paused for effect, taking a deep breath. "Are you listening to me?" My girlfriend (who was actually just sitting in another room) responded with a faint "Yes...". Not bad! I'd expect more, but that's about what I heard at 50% volume.

Next up: whining and complaining some more. Sometimes I just feel like the world is against me," I said, trying to muster up my best whiny tone. "It's just it's not fair...I try to do the best I can all the time but people just don't understand..." I stumbled over a few words, but overall, the sound was muffled enough that I couldn't quite make out what she was saying at 75% volume. Not bad!

Finally, I cranked up the volume to 100%, hoping to block out my complaining completely. "I feel like you're not paying attention to me and like you're ignoring me as usual...but you know when I die then you'll wish you could have me and hear me in my complaining..." And then... nothing. Not a peep! The sound was so effectively isolated that I couldn't even hear her responding.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the sound isolation on these Audio-Technica ATTH Ws 70s headphones. They passed both the sound leak test and The Girlfriend Test with flying colors. If you're in the market for a new pair of headphones and value good sound isolation, these might be worth considering.

couple of other headphones so that's pretty impressive very very nice based off of that right there it's a pass at 7 at 100% we know it's going to leak a bit so let's try it out you yeah all right so this is 100% I can hear it but this is actually not that bad wow really surprising really good at 100% you could be like I heard it but it wasn't very loud or bothersome at all so definitely A+ for sound leak test guys really good job isolating sounds from the um atw at7s cool so now we're going to jump into the girlfriend test K to tell them what it's about sure so with you so the girlfriend test um I usually do something that's annoying that most girlfriends would do or maybe just like what I do that annoys him and he tries to see if his headphones can block out the racket my complaints anything like that okay so that's what we're going to do and today what I'm going to do is I'm going to do my typical whining and sometimes emotional outbursts and cries so you guys will get to witness that today all right so wish me luck guys and we're going to start this off at 50% 75% and done 100% so let's start that 50% boo I hate the way I look today I feel like I look so fat okay are you listening to me unfortunately yes I I heard a whole of that at 50% it wasn't enough to uh black out any of that I heard it pretty clearly so let's crank it up to 75% and see how it does there ready okay sometimes I just feel like the world's against me it's just it's not fair I try to do the best I can all the time but people just don't understand the fact that I really do try and I Tred my hardest but I just think they judge me okay I don't know what she said at the end there but it was actually it was actually pretty good guys I did hear her a bit but it was all mumbles so didn't isolate it completely but at least it wasn't enough to um distract me by picking up what she was saying so pretty good there now let's do 100% hopefully this will block it out completely let's try it you know one even cares about me it's not right I know okay I got into it all right guys at 100% I didn't hear her at all pretty good there um I wish it was a little a little more around the 50% range I wish it could isolate a little bit more but not too bad 75% did the trick so I'm very very impressed didn't leak at all at the um it didn't leak at all with 50% through 75% well it did Leak with 75% but it wasn't bad and um of course 100% was pretty normal but it was still a lot lower than a lot of the headphones we've tried so very impressed which we should isolate a little bit more anyone
