FD Irwindale Practice - Blew my Engine! SOS!

The Experience of Racing with a High-Performance Car

I was at the track feeling like I had finally gotten used to the chaser, but then I realized that it felt like the craziest and most powerful thing in the world. But as soon as I hit the limiter, I knew I wasn't in control. The last lap was a perfect storm of everything just working together to lift the head gasket. I'm not sure what's going on with my car, but I know it feels like I've got the skills to make it work.

I think one reason we're having trouble is that our engine management system is set up for long compression, which might be a problem at 400 feet above sea level. But that's not something you can test out here at the track, so we're just going to have to trust our instincts and adjust on the fly. I'm glad I've got a great team behind me - they'll help me figure out what's going on and get us back up front.

We're also having some issues with traction, which is why I think we might be able to solve this problem by adding an extra layer of tread to our tires. That way, we can double the life of our tires and avoid getting all the cones washed out like we have been. Our opponents are definitely giving us a run for our money, but I'm confident that with a few tweaks, we'll be able to come out on top.

We've made some changes to our engine management system in an attempt to free up more power. We're talking about adding more nitrous oxide to the system, which should give us an extra boost of horsepower. But it's not just about throwing more fuel at the problem - we need to make sure that everything is working together seamlessly if we want to get the best results.

Our experience with engine swaps has been invaluable so far. We pulled out the old motor and found a head gasket failure due to detonation in one of our spark plugs. It was a clear indication that our car needed some major work before we could even think about competing at this level. But now, thanks to our team's expertise, we're going to be able to put in a new engine and get back out on the track as soon as possible.

One of the things I appreciate most about racing is the sense of community that exists within our sport. Everyone is so helpful and willing to lend a hand - whether it's sharing tools or offering advice, we all work together to make sure everyone has what they need to succeed. And with that kind of support, even when things get tough (like they did for us in that last lap!), I know we can always count on each other.

So, as we head back to the pits and try to get some rest before our next run, I'm feeling pretty confident about what tomorrow will bring. We've made some changes to our setup, gathered some valuable intel from other teams, and are ready to put it all into practice. With a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, I know we'll be able to come out on top and take down that tough competitor, Byron.

made it to la we are here at irwindale for the very last two rounds of fd uh before we get into anything this video is going to have both no i guess this video is just going to be practiced huh yeah sorry i had a mental shut down for a second um chris and andy flew in about five days ago to go over the car they found a bunch of broken stuff and i want to give the mic over to them so they can fill you guys in all right so walking around the car aesthetically i will say there is a very fun video clip of andy bashing out the door with a hammer we made the call not to go crazy and make the car super pretty for the last round of irwindale all the cars get super beat up here and i want to have it super nice at the end of the season so i thought just going into it it's not a spectator event you know it still looks pretty good from say 10 feet away so andy just bashed it out with the hammer walking around uh it's not really in that bad of shape just you know front bumpers got some little scratches here and there but there were a bunch of broken stuff that we didn't know about and that's what i'm gonna let chris fill you guys in on what are you doing chris throwing some springs on how's it going guys tell me all the all the secret stuff that you guys found that was broken that we didn't know was broken before okay so what all did we change we changed coilovers all the way around rear coilover was blown front coilovers were bent that's kind of common after texas texas is a brutal track especially when you get ran into a lot yeah yeah um of course a little bit of body work try to make this thing as pretty as we can as pretty as we can and we did axel's axles had a little bit of play in them uh we changed clutch clutch was a little worn out pilot bushing was worn out front top hats on wise fab one right tie rod then we just did like periodic maintenance changed oil transmission fluid diff oil um nut and bolted the car just kind of checked everything over and then i did a little bit of testing in the car um seemed okay changed some spring rates around finishing up the rear right now and should be good to go and that's something i'm really stoked that you were able to do because a lot of the issues with the car we don't even know until a car starts being drifted because it's really hard to tell but i feel like one thing i want to touch on with you saying all that stuff pretty much every round even if there's no crashes there's so much that needs to be looked at and gone through the gearbox pretty much every single round has needed to been gone through and new parts ordered for it so a lot of people are like why don't you just run this car at every osw day and it's like what would you say a fair estimate it would be like two to three full work days to like competently go through the car after every time it's being driven oh 100 i've been out here since last wednesday and we finished yesterday so that was a solid week's worth of work just from texas because the car was ready to go in texas we did a lot of driving in texas and then from wednesday till yesterday it was eight to 10 hours a day every single day and now the car's ready to go again so yeah and that doesn't include the insane cost of tires and fuel and all the other consumables on the car so it's it's very expensive to operate and that's why you don't see pretty much any of these guys running their fd cars at demos or anything like that um the smart way to do it is to do a van and chelsea do and have like almost identical demo cars that are much simpler set up that don't require as much tlc but i thought that'd be an interesting thing to touch on because we kind of graze over the like that part of behind the scenes of what goes into the car um is there anything else i'm forgetting on the car that we should talk about i think that's pretty much everything everything else is just little odd and ends like the buttons we put the new ecu master keypad buttons in this is a great plug for me to talk about the fact that you guys can purchase ecu master stuff on my web store and get entries to win the supra and that giveaway is i think only has one day left when this video is going to go up don't don't work out words there might be one or two days left but anything you get off my site the ecu master dishwerks bc racing or any of our merch will get you entered for a chance to win the super and fifteen thousand dollars cash every five dollars you spend gets you an entry we have a ton of uc master products listed on the site where you can literally get anything you want so just hit us up if we don't have it listed and we can get you squared away they're everywhere they're following me everywhere it's a sign that i need to get one mike they're just they're just calling my name this is chris's big congrats to chris he joined the corvette gang i'm jealous very jealous but i'm stoked for him um so today's pretty much just more setup stuff and then actually this evening we're gonna go over take a look at the e46 over at castro's it's got some new fancy little bits and then practice tomorrow stop not doing it right right go up hey just kidding you should do it more often it's funny everybody do your best showman impression chris do that again put the spongebob meme in this is why all the other teams don't take us seriously what are you simpletons doing so one other thing i wanted to do is give a massive thank you to the dc auto sport guys um what i forgot to mention before is they were super super welcoming and let chris and andy use their facility so they could go over the car test it and get everything dialed in so massive massive thank you to those guys i wish i was there to thank them in person but it's sweet to have uh the support you know everybody's like really really friendly in the industry and it's always cool to see and speaking of friendly people we're now in north hollywood we're going to pick up the e46 it's been over at castro's so we're gonna stop by there and see what's new so we're back you stole my car what's up guys we're taking all the local car meets just ripping around the block it's been fun i'm just playing so uh what would you want to walk me through yeah so i had autumn over at speed collision paint the hood paint your mirrors they fully disassemble the mirror so you won't have any overspray you want to see spots and then i have my guy here our detailer color corrected for you obviously we didn't wax or polish the hood just yet but we just wanted to make you fall in love with it a little more i'm so pumped i kind of like jokingly said because i knew we were going to be picking this car up and bringing it back to florida and the rig i was like hey like there's a lot of really really good painters out in california and i figured it would probably be a good opportunity to get it done while it was out here and since the car was just kind of sitting for a month or so yeah so i'm super super happy and i guess we should we should show them the goodies in the trunk too i forgot about that my oem plus inspiration helped me acquire oem m3 aero so we can finally make my um or i should say my e36 back home look cooler so i'm gonna do oem arrow with like ltw wing ltw front lip and it'll look so much better like three minutes ago i mentioned the fact that i would still need to get the ltw wing and the lip look what he has yeah so you make these right so we make these replica ltw that's literally a direct copy of the factory one because nobody makes it and then that is an m.a shaw uh my car's gonna look so cool finally i know it's sick though that we don't have the shipping into something you're just throwing in the total yeah it's a perfect time one stop shop i don't put this on e46 real quick all right it's officially practice day i've never driven on irwindale i actually watched irwindale for my first time last night i've never seen any of the competitions here i don't know why it's just maybe just timing wise i've never been able to see it looks pretty cool looks like a combo of a few different tracks that i've driven one thing that we have to look out for though that second inside wall or whatever you want to call it eats a lot of cars up so the right side of this car is going to get pounded i'm going to do my best in practice just kind of chill we've got all day practice and then they switch up the schedule so tomorrow is actually the first day of competition but if you walk over here with me you'll see we got a little science project going on and the guys right now are measuring all the uh current measurements for arms and stuff so everything's ready to go and we can pop right on in the event of a crash or something so you can get back out and make the most out of practice just because there's what like three or four laps that we'll probably end up getting in practice it's really important to make the most of them um but yeah it's just a chill day and i'm excited to get back in the seat of this thing i'm driving the chaser and that thing's slow compared to this the things that we do uh we go out on track now which helps me a ton we go out on the scooters and try to visualize all the different points and stuff try to figure out where the zones are it gives us you a way better idea of the pavement the bumps the material and it makes you feel way better your first lap out especially if it's a track you haven't been on before uh that was a super super garbage run i wish that i was driving this car during drifting getting used to this car on my first lap out i had a brand new track i've never used before it is terrifying uh there's no excuses other than i am scared like this and i definitely just did a garbage lap and i'm gonna do my best but man this is the scarf for the different of what i finally got used to during different weeks that's why i found the taster first just hopefully there's enough practice where i can get comfortable and moving down the least black um ah that last round feels a little bit better i definitely have some more confidence in the car but something's really really wrong with it it's very down on power so you're looking at the car right now to see something mechanical i've been hearing the hissing noise i'm wondering if it's like uh has a big boost or something but they're looking into it right now i put it into the wall on that last one uh i don't know what's going on the car is really loose so we're going to try adding some dip to it but it also feels like the car is really down on power so we don't have enough time to check into what's going on in practice we make sure that the nitrous is working but it just it just feels like it's missing like 200 300 horsepower uh but we don't have the ability to look into it fully in practice right now so it's gonna have to wait until afterwards i'm just gonna have to do my best um oh but i'm still kind of struggling in that very last outer zone i was a little blind coming into the second outer uh so i kept it really conservative i know it was inside there but it seems like everyone's struggling the very last zone because it's kind of like a downhill with a bump a little bit more shallow and mellow i think that will help but right now i'm just giving it a little bit too much sauce and uh at least on the bank i feel a lot better because that's like the scariest part for me is a lot i need to get another trunk that's big big sad big sad look so sad i realize one other problem though coming back to the pits if you look at the tire i wasn't even done with my full two runs and they're like all bulb so i'm gonna try doing like a less of a burnout um i saw a lot of other people doing like really tiny burnouts maybe that's why um the track's a little bit longer than it normally is and uh running out of tire are probably the best change how do we look compared to everybody else other than messing up a lot we're really slow right you're the fastest out of time so far really yeah i mean i time like the second half of the field because everyone's getting used to it but you were like fastest probably two tenths of a second in the first uh outer zone you came a little shallow but uh so i had an asterisk next to it but it was still faster time it feels so slow we're like trying to add more grip to the car and but do you see the tires look there's a lot yeah so we gotta we gotta work on that um and then figure out why it feels like really really laggy so i can't land elevation this time because we're only like 400 feet above sea level so i think i think maybe the engine's like long compression or something but i don't know you should never bring a compression tester to the track anyway so for sure compression testing cars is bad luck uh but yeah no it's weird because you would think that i got used to the chaser now this car feels like the craziest most powerful thing in the world but i'm like bored and like third and it's like i don't know maybe it's just you it sounds like you're hitting the limiter at the uh the last the last the last one was better yeah but it was like flicking into the very very last last zone i would like flora in a bar but i think you are right i need to go a little bit shallower and like have that art a little bit better and i think the car will fight us less yeah a lot of people are coming in hot there and you just keep washing out getting all the cones so i think another reason why they're washing out is the same issue that we're facing so i think what we're gonna do mike make sure you don't put this in the video we're gonna like glue on an extra layer of tread so we could have double the life don't put that make sure you don't put that in the video the other teams might copy us all right adam is getting ready to go out or start the last practice for the day i know they made some changes based off of what he was doing in the car earlier he kept saying that it felt like he was a lot lower on power so i'm gonna go try and steal freddy for a second and have him explain the changes that he did with the nitrous ready uh what nitrous changes did you end up making before more more so not not less more more more more schooling more thank you for the technical report and all this we'll check back in later hmm um 400 more horsepower so i think that's good um hey uh all right i don't know so the motor started misfiring a little bit in the last lap we pulled the plugs so this is why like a normal spark plug looks pretty clean burn and then cylinder four you can see a lot of detonation marking around it um which potentially caused the head gasket failure from detonation this is the only plug that looks like that um yeah we're gonna swap the motor tonight the head the head gasket is definitely hurt all right confirmed that uh we do have low compression so uh the best scenario and the best thing that we can do right now is to put the spare engine in the car uh the kind of general theory that we have as to why it happened if you remember in the beginning it's the cars felt laggy like low in power i think that we had a few issues going on and we band-aided it by you know spring knight just a little bit sooner adding a little bit of boost and it felt a little bit better and then on those last laps it's like the perfect storm where like everything just worked again and i think it just made too much torque too soon and lifted the head so the guys are already on it already getting engine swap we're gonna have a time lapse of that they're gonna do their best and i'm just thankful that i have such a great team doing it i was just i was just talking about how on grid it's the most bizarre feeling to like go into the corner of a track that i have so little experience with with such an expensive car and just have the confidence in the team to know that if i truck it right into the wall i got my back and they have all the parts laid out ready to swap on because i'm i'm so used to driving the conservation mode that to drive at the limit and to know that it's okay if a car gets essentially written off because they can put it right back together and get me back out on track is it's crazy but i'm super thankful for everyone thank you oh as you guys can see the car is in great hands we're gonna head back and try to get some rest for tomorrow it's not a super early day but i want to make sure i'm well rested because uh i got a very first tough competitor named byron you get it so top 16 don't know who i'm gonna go against hopefully we'll get the car dialed in freddie's pretty confident that he can just get it good without having to go to a dyno so um excited drive tomorrow we're gonna make a few setup changes we've gathered some info talking to some of the teams that have all just been super helpful it's just such a cool community everyone's helping out lending tools offering advice and hopefully feel better tomorrow go into some battles and get some wins thank you guys when you saidcheck check check check check check check check check are we checked yet are we good can i start tell me when the changes that he did with the nitrous ready uh what nitrous changes did you end up making before more more so not not less more more more more schooling more thank you for the technical report and all this we'll check back in later hmm um 400 more horsepower so i think that's good um hey uh all right i don't know so the motor started misfiring a little bit in the last lap we pulled the plugs so this is why like a normal spark plug looks pretty clean burn and then cylinder four you can see a lot of detonation marking around it um which potentially caused the head gasket failure from detonation this is the only plug that looks like that um yeah we're gonna swap the motor tonight the head the head gasket is definitely hurt all right confirmed that uh we do have low compression so uh the best scenario and the best thing that we can do right now is to put the spare engine in the car uh the kind of general theory that we have as to why it happened if you remember in the beginning it's the cars felt laggy like low in power i think that we had a few issues going on and we band-aided it by you know spring knight just a little bit sooner adding a little bit of boost and it felt a little bit better and then on those last laps it's like the perfect storm where like everything just worked again and i think it just made too much torque too soon and lifted the head so the guys are already on it already getting engine swap we're gonna have a time lapse of that they're gonna do their best and i'm just thankful that i have such a great team doing it i was just i was just talking about how on grid it's the most bizarre feeling to like go into the corner of a track that i have so little experience with with such an expensive car and just have the confidence in the team to know that if i truck it right into the wall i got my back and they have all the parts laid out ready to swap on because i'm i'm so used to driving the conservation mode that to drive at the limit and to know that it's okay if a car gets essentially written off because they can put it right back together and get me back out on track is it's crazy but i'm super thankful for everyone thank you oh as you guys can see the car is in great hands we're gonna head back and try to get some rest for tomorrow it's not a super early day but i want to make sure i'm well rested because uh i got a very first tough competitor named byron you get it so top 16 don't know who i'm gonna go against hopefully we'll get the car dialed in freddie's pretty confident that he can just get it good without having to go to a dyno so um excited drive tomorrow we're gonna make a few setup changes we've gathered some info talking to some of the teams that have all just been super helpful it's just such a cool community everyone's helping out lending tools offering advice and hopefully feel better tomorrow go into some battles and get some wins thank you guys when you said\n"
