iSlate: The Apple Tablet Revealed?

The Apple Tablet: What We Know So Far

Hey guys, what's up? It's Duncan, and today we're going to go over one of the most exciting things that have come out of Apple since the iPhone - the Apple tablet. There's a huge amount of information about it, so let's get started.

The first piece of evidence is the date January 26th, when Financial Times covered the news that Apple has rented out the same Center that they usually use for events, including the last one in September where they announced the new iPod Nano. This looks perfect for a tablet announcement as well as for the announcement that the MacBook Pro is getting core i5 and i7 processors.

The next evidence is about the name of the tablet - Slate. The past few days have contained a huge amount of evidence that Apple has been working on the name, which they own the slate.com domain among many others. They've trademarked the name under a shell company, although this doesn't mean it will definitely be called the "Isolate". It certainly sounds very catchy and is probably the most likely bet considering how few other names make sense.

Let's take a look at exactly what the tablet might be all about. We're guessing that the tablet uses a smallish solid-state drive, perhaps a 64 GB one. The processor could either be an Intel atom or a custom chip - both are possibilities. An Intel atom makes sense since it's already in use in other tablets like the Juju. On the other hand, an Atom is underpowered compared to what we'd expect from such an expensive tablet.

My bet would be on a custom chip entirely tailored made for this tablet. Apple bought chip maker PA Semi just recently, and they're certainly capable of creating a processor for this tablet. This would also fit in nicely with Apple's style of controlling the entire package - operating system to all the aspects of hardware.

The question is, what operating system will the tablet use? Most evidence points towards it running a custom version of iPhone OS, which of course is also a version of OS 10. Apparently, app developers have been told not to make their apps entirely dependent on the screen size of the iPhone and iPod Touch, so either the tablet will run a modified version of iPhone OS or contain an iPhone OS emulator.

We're still unsure about this one, but we'll get back to it later. Another big question mark is the price - everyone agrees that it will be between the most expensive iPhone (around $300) and the cheapest MacBook ($1,000). Since the only other tablet in the space, Juju, costs $500, Apple's tablet will probably be a lot more than that.

Looking at all these details, I'd say the price point of around $700-$800 is the most likely. There are plenty of rumors about specific features in the tablet - one particular patent from Apple applies to a multi-touch tactile keyboard that would allow the screen to physically rise and lower at different times. This would be perfect for a keyboard because it would allow the screen to remain flat normally, but could morph into a keyboard when needed.

This technology is certainly possible and would make the tablet a lot easier to use on. Now we're just waiting for everything to come together if things go according to plan - that's likely next month with the tablet being released for sale a few months later.

So, what do you guys think? Are you excited about the idea of an Apple tablet or do you think it's going to be too expensive? Leave your thoughts in the comments because I'd love to hear them. Thanks for watching!
