What to Eat in Myrtle Beach, SC _ The Extra Mile with Tyler Florence _ Food Network
The Extra Mile: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Great Food Truck Race Summer Beach Battle
As we shot next to Peppa Hall, I couldn't help but feel excited about this place. The owner has been here since 1937, and it's truly a piece of Myrtle Beach history. We're in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and this is the summer beach battle of the Great Food Truck Race. I'm Tyler Florence, and welcome to the show! Welcome, everybody! It's great to be here today.
As we take a look around, you can see that this place has it all - our favorites, including hot dogs with mustard, peaches, burgers, and even fried Oreos. These are just a few of the delicious options available at Peppa Hall. As I always say, when it comes to food trucks, you've got to have some amazing options, and this place definitely delivers.
We're also here because we're taking you behind the scenes on the entire trip from Myrtle Beach all the way to Key West, Florida. We'll be visiting some of the best little secret restaurants in between, and I'm excited to share them with you. As I always say, it's all about finding the good stuff and going the extra mile.
As we take a look at this place, I notice that they have scrambled eggs, vegan nachos, and even soft-shell crabs straight from the water. These are just a few of the amazing options available here. The chef is telling me about how these crabs are harvested during the molting season, when their shells are still soft and vulnerable. It's truly a delicacy, and I'm excited to learn more about it.
The chef explains that when the crabs are in this stage, they're perfect for eating because you can eat the whole thing, including the lungs and the back of them. He also tells me that he's been working on this restaurant since he was 18, and it smells just like his old workplace at The Trawler.
We're now ready to rock and roll! We're going to add some tempura batter to these soft-shell crabs and cook them to perfection. As we take a look at the chef's technique, I'm reminded of my own culinary school days. It's amazing how something as simple as a delicious meal can bring people together.
As we prepare for our next challenge, I want to talk about one of my favorite restaurants on the strip - The Sea Captain's House. This place is truly a legendary spot in Myrtle Beach, and their signature dish, shrimp and grits, is something that I've been dreaming about for years. We're going to head over there now and see if it lives up to its reputation.
As we arrive at The Sea Captain's House, I'm immediately struck by the historic feel of this place. Chef Gary Smith is a friend of mine from culinary school, and it's amazing to see him in action here. He tells me that he's been working on this restaurant for years, and it's truly his passion.
We're now ordering our meal, and I have to say, it looks like creme brulee - the grits are creamy and yellow, and they look absolutely delicious. As we take a bite, I'm reminded of why this dish is so beloved. It's truly one of the best plates of food that I've had in a very long time.
As we come to the end of our challenge today, I want to thank all of the teams for participating in the Great Food Truck Race summer beach battle. It's been an absolute pleasure to share this experience with you, and I know that next week's destination will be just as exciting. We're off to beautiful Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where we'll find more delicious food trucks and hidden gems.
