The Joy of Building a Car from Scratch: A Personal Perspective
As I sit here with my trusty sidekick, Nicole's new SR hatchback, I have to say that I'm really excited for this project. Having built several cars in the past, including two S13s, I know how much fun it is to see a car come together from the ground up. And let me tell you, this car is going to be a labor of love.
Now, I know some people might look at buying a built car and think that's cheating or that the owner is trying to pass off someone else's work as their own. But that's just not how it works for us. We're all about building cars from scratch, learning the skills ourselves, and putting in the time and effort required to make them truly special.
And speaking of special, this SR hatchback is going to be a real treat. I bought it with some modifications already done to it, but that's okay by me. In fact, I think it's actually helped us get off to a great start. The previous owner had put in some good work, and we can use those parts as a springboard for our own projects.
Of course, there are always people who might be a bit miffed about buying built cars. They might see it as not being "real" or that the owner is trying to get away with something. But let me tell you, I've been in this game long enough to know that everyone's car has been modified in some way. It's just part of the world we live in.
So, what does it take to build a car like Nicole's SR hatchback? Well, for starters, you need a clean shell with no rust or frame damage. That costs around $2,000. You also need a Silvia front, which comes in at about $1,000. The internal is another story altogether - we're talking about a whole new world of parts and upgrades here. Let's just say it adds up to around $3,000.
Now, the SR itself is where things get really interesting. We've got a swap kit that includes everything we need to make this car go from zero to sixty in under 5 seconds. That comes out to around $500 for the parts alone, but trust me, it's worth every penny. And then there's the turbo - oh boy, is the turbo ever something special. We're talking about a whole new level of performance here, folks.
Of course, no car build would be complete without some wheels and tires to match. I've got my eye on some Cosmos Wheels that I think will look perfect with this car. And let's not forget about suspension - we need to get the ride nice and smooth if we're going to make this thing handle like a dream.
Now, I know what you're thinking - all these parts must add up to a pretty penny, right? Well, let me tell you, they do. We're talking about over $116,000 just for the parts alone. But when you think about it, that's not so bad considering how much time and effort we'll put into making this car truly special.
And that's exactly what I'm excited about - taking all these parts and turning them into something truly unique. Nicole has a friend who's parting out his couple of S13s, so we're going to hit him up for some replacement parts to get the interior looking fresh and new again. We'll add some pop-up headlights, maybe some 20 mil over fenders in the front, and give it a nice stock hood to finish off the look.
Of course, there's one more thing that's on Nicole's wish list - a full-on pop-up system for those headlights. Now, I know what you're thinking - that's not exactly easy to do. But trust me, we've got this in the bag. We'll get some typex front bumpers, maybe some 20 mil over fenders in the front, and then we'll just play around with the alignment until it feels just right.
It's going to be a fun project, folks - that's for sure. I'm excited to see how it all comes together, and I know Nicole is too. She's not feeling too well at the moment, but she'd be stoked if you guys could send her some good vibes. Thanks so much for tuning in, and we'll catch you guys tomorrow!
