The Author's Thoughts on the DJI Osmo Action and GoPro Hero 8 Cameras
As I compared the two cameras, the DJI Osmo Action and GoPro Hero 8, I couldn't help but notice that they both have Wi-Fi and apps to control them. Both cameras are great in terms of usability, with intuitive interfaces that are familiar to users who have worked with similar camera systems before. The author notes that this is an important aspect for anyone considering purchasing either camera.
One notable difference between the two cameras is their grading functions. According to the author, the GoPro tends to produce a more vibrant and colorful image, which they believe will appeal to most people. In contrast, the DJI Osmo Action produces a more subdued look that is less pleasing to the author's eye. However, the author also notes that this subtlety can be an advantage in certain situations.
The author also mentions that both cameras have tiny sensors and high ISOs, which can lead to issues with image quality when pushed too far. The GoPro's camera has a maximum ISO of 6400, while the DJI Osmo Action's camera is limited to 3200. This difference in ISO range may be important for some users, particularly those who plan to use their cameras in low-light situations.
In terms of design, the author notes that they prefer the GoPro's design and usability features over those of the DJI Osmo Action. The author mentions that the DJI Osmo Action has a somewhat awkward shape and doesn't feel as comfortable to hold as the GoPro. However, the author also acknowledges that this may not be an issue for everyone.
One aspect of the DJI Osmo Action that does stand out is its "ghosting" effect in low-light situations. According to the author, high ISOs can lead to a "crazy line" or "bleed out" effect on the image, which they find unappealing. The GoPro's camera, on the other hand, tends to produce more natural-looking images with less distortion.
The author notes that both cameras have features like automatic exposure and noise reduction, but these features can sometimes lead to a loss of texture and detail in the image. In their opinion, this is a trade-off that some users may be willing to make for cleaner images at high ISOs.
The author also mentions that the GoPro has features like locking in ISO settings, which allow users to cap out their camera's sensitivity at 800. This feature can help prevent noise and distortion in low-light situations.
As I weighed my options between these two cameras, I had to consider factors beyond just image quality. The author notes that the DJI Osmo Action is making a bold move by entering the action camera market with its first product, the DJI Osmo Action. This competition could potentially bring out improvements in design and usability features from GoPro.
In conclusion, my experience with the DJI Osmo Action and GoPro Hero 8 cameras has been informative. While both cameras have their strengths and weaknesses, I ultimately think that the GoPro is a better fit for most users. The author notes that they prefer the GoPro's design and usability features over those of the DJI Osmo Action.
But before making any final decisions, it's worth considering that the GoPro Hero 8 does have some limitations. When comparing these cameras side by side, I couldn't help but notice that the DJI Osmo Action is nearly flawless in terms of image quality and features. This camera has a feature set that will likely appeal to serious videographers.
One thing is clear: both cameras are fantastic options for capturing footage on the go. And while the GoPro may have some advantages over the DJI Osmo Action, it's worth considering whether the difference between these two cameras is enough to justify the cost of one versus another.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is the GoPro Hero 8 black and thisis a DJI Osmo action these are twoaction cameras that we are gonna belooking at in comparison to each otherwhat's up everybody my name is Joeyfamiliy I'm a video producer here attested and I'll be taking a look atthese two cameras DJI actually sent usboth these cameras late last year theysent us their Osmo action but they alsopurchased and sent us a GoPro Hero 8 sofull disclaimer there I'm sharing thatinformation with you because I thinkthat's an important part of thisnarrative that tells me that DJI is veryconfident in their camera they're veryconfident that it is as good as orbetter than the GoPro we will see wewill give you our opinion about that atthe end of this video but let's jumpright into this now everything shot withthese action cameras will be kind of asis I don't do any full color touch-upsand I won't adjust any of the audio whenI get to the audio testing and thisreview video is being published at 1080so everything will be set to that framesize I might do some scaling adjustmentshere and there but I'm not going todegrade the quality by upscalinganything everything will basically bescaled down I shot most this stuff at2.7 k60 that just seemed like areasonable frame size for me aresolution size but these cameras arefully 4k capable and kept you before K60 but I tend to use 2.7 K because a lotof my stuff is published in 1080 sothere's a lot to cover with these twocameras I mean there's a lot to coverdosage of one of these camera there's alot of functionality built into thesebut I think the big thing that peopleare gonna be wanting to know or not onlyto know but making this decision basedoff of is the just overall image qualityof it the image that the camera is justprocess and push out to you so let'stalk a little bit about that these arethese are tiny sensors on wide-anglelenses and so each is using a little bitof processing power to add somesharpness and clarity and it kind of itdiffers based off like how much detailis in the shot sometimes we'll get somesome gnarly looking aliasing when youhave too much detail and certain thingslike trees where the camera is trying toresolve that but really when it comesdown to like clarity and Christmas iskind of how each of these resolve thatsharpness and they're pretty comparableI think the DJI at times can look alittle more alias in the trees but it'sbarely noticeable the other big part Ithink actually the most important partthat is gonna be a big decision makerfor people is the is the color treatmentthatout of these cameras you'll notice thatthe GoPro just loves orange it lovesorange it loves vibrancy it loves highsaturation there's a bit of an s-curvehappening with the contrastyou're seeing a relatively grated imageI call this like the GoPro look this isthe very tan very orange skin tones verybright orange II highlight like sunsetsand like bright green grass and bluesit's I mean it's a little bit too muchin my opinion but most people will enjoythis image and if you do then it's allready for you to come out of the box theDJI on the other hand you'll noticelooks much flatter it's not particularlya flat image or I'd call a flat imagebut it's more subdued that thesaturation is dialed way back thevibrancy there's a little bit less of ans-curve that's not as aggressive it's animage that you'd want to work with inpost or I'd want to work with an post Iwould if I was to take photos that eachof these images I'd prefer the DJI if Iwas gonna be matching this with othercameras if it was an action camaccompanied by other cameras I'd wantthis because this is a better startingpoint for me to to push and pull theimage or is the GoPro I would be pullingthe image kind of back from its gradeand then moving it to store I need it tobe if that'll make sense and you don'twant to do that too much because theseare highly compressed codecs and formatsand images will start breaking apart andsort of look a little ugly and so havinga starting point that's less treatedit's my preference as a professional nowthat all being said I don't actually seetoo much of a difference in the colorrenditions I know the color looks verydifferently but how each camerainterprets its blues its reds or screensthough that that data how it interpretsthose is pretty similar if I startbumping up the saturation on the on theDJI I will start to get closer to theGoPro GoPro still has a little bit morewarmer highlights than the DJI and theDDI probably a little bit warmer shadowsand mid-tones but it's relatively closein color rendition so at this pointduring the video you might be askingyourself why do I care about any of thiswhy do I all I want is to bungee jumpoff of Machu Picchu and I need a actioncamera to do so the GoPro will then beyour camera for that it's a great camerafor out-of-the-box image that looks nicenow if you do want something from theGoPro that is nottreated there are log formats in both ofthese cameras there are GoPro has what'scalled protune and the DJI Osmo actionhas was called dicen alike and what thatdoes is it brings everything down to aflat profile I love working in theseformats normally the gh five that Ishoot on here I usually always shoot inv-log which is their log format andevery camera kind of nowadays has theirown log format and the versatility onthose formats can depend on how muchdata is being recorded to the card theGH five has a lot of data it's a 42image 10 bit and I can push and pullthose colors and contrast although aplace without the image degrading in myin the past I've shied away from usinglog formats and cameras that provideless data because you almost immediatelystart to get degradation now there's alot of people who have been using theselog formats and have been getting greatresults and great color and great oklooking images I haven't in the past soI tended to not really use it I shotvery little with this in the in theprotune and the decent alike just totest out the lots and just to see howthe color went and it's it seems fineand I think if you wanted to kind ofcontrol your GoPro a more and you wereconfident in your color grading abilitythen that protune is certainly an optionto to try out just know that you can'tgo too crazy with your color grading inyour color matching now I think myfavourite innovations with actioncameras over the years is thestabilization both these cameras havedigital stabilization which means thatthey're using a little bit more thesense they're a little bit more theimage and reconfiguring the image togive it a smoother stabilized look whenyou're doing things like running orbiking or jogging GoPro uses what'scalled the hyper smooth function and DJIuses what they call Rocksteady both ofthese work and look fantasticI think the DJI you might have a littlebit more sway but it's barely noticeablehere you can see examples of me runningwith the cameras now let's just startoff here this is both cameras with themodes turned off I'm just holding thecamera and you can see it's relativelyrough there's a lot of shake a lot ofwomen that you would expect as you'rerunning with the camera in your hand nowI'm gonna turn both of these modes onnow you can see me running things aremuch more smooth much more pleasing yeahthis would be great for like things likesnowboarding or skiing ormaybe some water sports where it reallyjust keeps the the subject centered andframe and not all shaky and going crazyso this whole part might sound a littlebit petty but usability and just designis kind of important for me with thesecameras I don't like their bodies andfunctionality working against me solet's talk a little bit about what Ilike and dislike cuz it's actually kindof funny there's both these cameras haveso much that I dislike about the designand and I like and I like I wish I canget some kind of amalgamation of theboth it just combined to give me my myperfect camera but let's talk about theGoPro the GoPro I love this new justfully inflate and closed body there's nono cages it's just it's just there it'swaterproof with everything witheverything locked in is waterproof ithas these mounting points that fold downnow even though I'm kind of done withthis whole like weird little screwplasticy mounting option I don't know ofany other alternative options for thesebut um I'm a little bit tired of themwhatever this this is the best versionof that where it actually just foldsdown you don't have to deal with likefinding the cage and find the piece justfold down and click it in or fold it upand tape it or butyl to some kind ofsurface the micro SD card look anotherthing I'm done with is micro SD cardsI'm ready for these cameras I have fullSD si but I'll take the extra grams andwait I'm so tired of micro SD s anywaythe GoPro has this micro SD cards slimfrom right against the battery it'salmost impossible for me to get out withmy fat fingers with the battery in placeso every time that I have to get thecard out I usually ought to take thebattery out which is a small nitpick butit's just a pain I want this stuff to bea little bit easier the screen in the UIthe uise was a little bit dated I likethe G I'll get the deed you guys in aminute but I like their version of thisbetter this feels a little bit a littlebit antiquated a little bit clunky andsometimes I just get lost in the menustrying to figure out what I'm trying todoI love the presets that it lets you illso you set a presets and access thosevery quickly that's awesomeit does only have the rear screen withmuch more of a bevels than the DJI whichI'm not a huge fan of but yeah rearscreen you can only see kind of behindyou can only see what the camera seenfrom behind you there's an attachmentyou can buy that gives you afront-facing camera I'm not sure howimportant that is to you or youor anybody really I mean let's talkabout what front-facing parents reallyform that's like vloggers for the mostpart you there's benefits of having thefront faces dream when you're trying tomount this thing to a car and adashboard and you really want to justsee what's in front of you but let'stalk a little bit about vlogging withthese cameras in general so this testhere is for for these cameras look likea vlogging camera now I know thesecameras aren't gonna be used for anykind of full-time vlogging for anyvloggers but um these gamers might beused for like supplemental purposescameras just bring in in spaces wherelarger cameras can't go right now I'mgonna throw this brick around and nowI'm on the DJI and the DJI I canactually see myself in the front-facingcamera which the girl pro doesn't haveso I can frame it myselfin the way I want which is good but alsothese cameras are such wide-angle lensesthat it's not gonna be too much of anissue to get yourself a frame I can Ican turn this back around at the GoProand assure myself that I'm in frame eventhough I can't see myself because theyknow that these things are white as heckand it's only two and a half three feetaway from me which the front-facingcamera is usually for when you want tofilm yourself so I don't think is anyreal danger and not having thefront-facing screen I could guess it isnice go back to the DJI you know littleextra feature but I don't think it'simperative to have specially if you'redoing any kind of vlogging talking tothe camera both of these cameras haveinternal microphones with their ownversion of I guess wind suppression Ishot a little test using the windsuppression here alright check one twothis is me speaking intogo pro and the DJI with wind reductionquite a bike so it's a little breezy onthe Mike's so we'll see how this holdsup and now I'm going to switch over tothe mike boats go pro and the DJI andagain I really like the I really likethe would be the the UI that DJI isgoing with it just feels snappy ifyou'll sell it it's very simple itsquick everything's very large for myeyes to see in my faint my big fingersto touch and the going from from frontto back screen is pretty nice just twotaps with three fingers pretty easy touse I we're back to cages this feelsthis feels oldthis feels antique rate at this point Idon't I don't like how I have to dealwith this plastic cage it uses the sameGoPro mounting system which is nice ifyou already have those mounts you canyou can throw those into the mix and usethose for DGI stuff but like just thecages in general and then you end upwith just so much especially those whowho have used multiple GoPro iterationsknow that like you get cases for oneversion that doesn't work the nextversion and then now you just have a anobsolete case it's kind of a pain and Idon't like that they went this route Ireally wish they stuck with the whatGoPro was trying to do and just creatingthe single body and then if you wantsome kind of protective cage or ifthey're I think cages should be anaccessory not something to have amandatory for mounting what else thelenses so the lenses the GoPro at thispoint went full just built in lens youcannot you scratch this thing it's stuckin there you cannot replace it theremight be some like I think there areprotective layers you can get to attachon to it the DJ actually has this likeremovable removablepiece on the edge a little filter thatyou can trade out and this might beimportant for you if you if we wantcertain color color filters if you'redoing some underwater stuff where you'retrying to do some stylistic stuff andthese if you're wanting to control yourshutter control everything and nd willhelp cut down that light it is actuallygreat for me I love this idea and I hopethey continue going on with this routeand keep it relatively standard icing upto keep buying new sets of filters foriterations of these cameras as far aslight goes I have noticed in a littlebit of my tests where light sources areon camera shining towards the light thatthe flare-ups on each of these camerasare very different now if you look hereyou'll see that the light leaking on theGoPro is very it's got this kind ofcrazy line that just prints it and I'veseen this I'm like cheaper plasticlenses or I mean always a cheaper likethere are certain lenses that just kindof have this effect and to me it lookscheap and immediately screams like videoor just cheap plastic the DJ actuallyblooms out in a way that's a little bitmore indicative of like moreprofessional lenses not a huge thing formost people um unless like you know ifyou don't mind that that's fine Idefinitely do mind that it's not looklike they go for so usually in the pastwhen I've shot with GoPros are some DJguys older cameras do that too I justtend to avoid lights on set and for me Ilike I like lights and shots to addcontrast here and there so I do like alittle bit of flare and if I do I wouldprefer the DJ I look rather than thatkind of crazy kinda bleed outnow both cameras have Wi-Fi and apps tocontrol them I've used both of these Ithink they're both great they're bothwork fantastic and if you've ever uselike just a camera on a phone you'll befamiliar with the UI style I did a wholebunch of ISO tests with low-light andI'm not gonna go too much in that that'sthat could be its own video the amountof information that is divulged thereand that will drag this video way downso let's avoid that just know that thesecameras are tiny sensors and high ISOsstart to really break apart the imagesand then they'll also try to clean it upfor you they aggressively try to almostlike smooth out some of the chromaticthe Loom annoys they're trying to smoothit out and give you something that looksmore I guess normal to me that looksterrible it looks it looks bad you kindof lose all the texture and detail ofthings so I tend to avoid high out ISOsI have both these guysthe GoPro believe goes like 6400 ISO andthe DGI goes to 3200 both of those areway too high in my opinion I mean ifyou're trying to get a if you're goingthat look if you're going for the ghosthunting kind of low light you're okaywith it being a little noisy and dirtythat's that's that's greatfor clean images I tend to stick at 800you can lock in both those ices on thiscamera they give it a cap essentiallyit's a yeah go Auto but don't go abovethis so let's wrap this if I think insummary most people who are looking atthese two cameras or going to be lookingat the image I don't want to say imagequality it's gonna say image because ofof what the the GoPro is doing as far aslike its grading functions I thinkpeople will generally like that papiorangie colorful look much more than thesubdued DJI I enjoy I actually like theDG eyes color and I think that the moresubdued look is more pleasing to what Iam drawn towards on what I do but Ithink all those little things that Imentioned about the DJI all those littlenitpicky things I mean they're notdeal-breakers but the things that Ibugged me about it I think will be fixedin a future iteration which is making mehold out on even buying a camera likethe DJI Osmo action if you were to makeme purchase one side by side I would gowith the GoPro the design the usabilitythe image I think all of these thingsjust make it a little bit better thanwhere the Osmo action is at right now solet's circle all the way back aroundinto ydj I sent Dustin awesome actionand the GoPro Hero 8 to compareis it because DJI thinks that theircamera is that much better than in theGoPro I don't think so I think this is Ithink this is marketing money intoletting people be aware that GoPro nowhas a serious competitor in the actionmarket they actually camera market inthe DJI Osmo action and I think that'ssomething that GoPro should take ratherseriously because this is DG eyes firstiteration of this camera and they nearlynail it so those are my thoughts onthese two very long video you guys willbe happy with any of these cameras thatyou choose to buy again my I thinkGoPros gonna be best for most people uhwe'll see you guys next time you fed anyother questionsthrow them down below or shoot me intoit on Twitter now I'll do my best toanswer until next time I will see youguys all stay safe and stay insideyouyou\n"
