current iPad lineup is Apple's most extensive yet in fact at an Apple event earlier this year CEO Tim Cook called it the biggest day for iPad since its introduction and that was way before they announced the iPad Mini a few weeks ago and he's right it's not very often that we have an almost complete lineup of new iPads all but the entry-level iPad got an update this year the iPad Pro 11 and 13 and the iPad Air were updated in May and then we got the iPad Mini this October so now you've got six different iPads to choose from so let's not waste any time and dive in to find the best option for you let's start with the iPad and I have the yellow one right here think of the iPad as the entry level model it's the most affordable of the bunch but by no means a slouch when it was last updated in 202 2 it got a much needed redesign to fit the current iPad lineup with a flat back and rounded Corners this means that now all iPads sort of look the same the iPad comes in a range of fun colors blue pink yellow as well as silver this iPad was the first to introduce changes that eventually came to higher-end iPads this year like moving the front-facing camera here a much more flattering angle for video calls you unlock it with your finger using the touch ID sensor right here on top of all the six iPads on offer the size of the iPad is the most common you can compare that to the 11-in iPad Air and the 11-in iPad Pro it's like your more standard size but one of the biggest differences is the display technology the screen on the iPad is not laminated if anything it just makes the iPad thicker Reflections may be a bit Bit Stronger but hey this isn't my Gadget match in fact I'd argue because of those separate parts it's the cheapest iPad to repair which makes sense because this iPad should primarily be for kids if you're a parent looking to buy your child their first iPad or you're a doting Uncle like me who insists his three-year-old nephew also needs one then definitely this is the iPad to get it's affordable and has larger bezels so you avoid accidental Taps when handling this year Apple announced a $100 price drop from $449 to$ 3.49 making this an even sweeter deal the iPad is perfect from toddler to grade school and speaking of school consider the magic keyboard folio for the iPad it's an extra $249 but in the meantime it will save you from having to buy your grade school or a separate laptop computer and while you're at it you can teach them how to use a keyboard and a trackpad my almost three-year-old nephew David loves to write so an apple pencil is a must for him too the iPad supports both the first gen apple pencil and the apple pencil USBC but I highly recommend the newer apple pencil USBC it magnetically attaches to the iPad like so while to charge and pair just pull this up it reveals a USBC Port where you can plug in a cable if you want a device with a screen bigger than an iPhone for playing games or watching videos a big screen for FaceTime calls with the family browsing the internet studying reading or typing school reports I highly recommend the iPad of course being the most affordable iPad comes with some compromises first we've already talked about the pros and cons of the non-laminated display second its A14 chip was used on the iPhone 12 series from 2020 that's not necessarily concession but do keep in mind that this is an already 4-year-old chip I'm not saying it's not capable it's still powerful enough to handle everyday tasks but when you start to do more whether that be gaming editing your videos then you may need to move up third the $349 price tag is for the base 64 GB Wi-Fi model for me in 2024 128 GB would be so much better but unfortunately there is no 128 GB model meaning if you is so much better than any colored eink reader can deliver with the most recent update comes an a77 Pro chip like the one found on last year's iPhone 15 Pro Max which not only makes it more powerful but it gives the iPad Mini Apple intelligence for things like writing tools image playground and image wand while smaller the iPad Mini actually sits above the standard iPad with a more powerful chip and a fully laminated display the iPad Mini supports both the apple pencil USB C and the apple pencil Pro but unless you need features like pressure sensitivity or hover then the USBC model should be good enough after all of those extra features mean anything to you then you're probably better off with a large iPad anyway I'd say this is the iPad for reading and maybe some note taking you can still watch movies or play games on it but if those are your priorities and pocketability and I use that very lightly is not one of your concerns then I highly suggest upgrading to the iPad Air also size up to the iPad Air if illustration painting photo or video editing are your jam now one con of the iPad Mini by virtue of its size is the fact that Apple doesn't offer a keyboard case for it and that's really not their fault because there's no way a standard siiz keyboard will match with its Dimensions that said you could use any portable Bluetooth keyboard as seen here with my previous gen iPad Mini the new iPad mini is available in four colors space gray blue purple and starlight it starts at $4.99 for the 128 Wi-Fi model if you're looking for the best value for money iPad we'll keep require more power you'll be all set I also love that this year alongside the standard 11-in model apple is also offering a larger 13-in iPad Air which means that if you want a larger screen you don't need to pay the premium to jump up to the Pro Models but why would you like a larger screen if you watch a lot of videos on your iPad especially when you're traveling a bigger screen is always better if you're into drawing and sketching you'll also appreciate that larger canvas now speaking of screens remember when I told you that the regular iPad doesn't have a laminated display well the iPads air do have one and here are some of the benefits tapping the screen sounds different there's better visibility out doors and it just looks better overall following the iPad this year both the iPad Air and the iPad Pro have 12 megapixel front cameras along the landscape Edge which is maybe an acknowledgement that iPad front cameras are less for selfies but more for video calls other notable differences include the ability to power a 6K display via its USBC port and support for the faster Wi-Fi 6E standard compared to the iPad Pro the iPad mini and thep IP ad air do not have face ID instead to unlock the device you use your fingerprint via the touch ID sensor built into the power button both 11 and 13in iPad Airs have their own magic keyboard it looks like this it doesn't come apart like the one the iPad uses and it doesn't have a function row but it's back lit and mimics the feel of a laptop computer I love how it elevates the iPad and how there's a pass through port for charging that said the iPad Pros get a sleeker new one made of aluminum with larger glass trackpads the magic keyboard for the iPad Air starts at $2.99 so it's only worth it if you do a lot of writing and plan on leaving your MacBook home when you travel now let's talk about my favorite accessory the apple pencil apart from the apple pencil USBC which I have been recommending thus far the new iPad Air like the new iPad Mini also supports the new Apple pencil Pro which brings even more functionality for pen users like haptic feedback the ability to pinch to bring up tool bars and a new barrel roll feature if you just care about note taking I think the apple pencil USBC is good enough but if you want to dabble more into art then the apple pencil Pro is worth every penny it's also worth pointing out that if you're upgrading from a previous generation iPad Mini or iPad Air than the second generation apple pencil is no longer compatible so iPad Air or iPad Pro hang in there we're talking about the iPad Pro next of all six iPads on offer today believe it or not the 13-in iPad Pro is the thinnest yep it's even thinner than the 13-in iPad Air it's also lighter which is welcome news because I do find find the 12.9 in iPad Pro to be heavy of course if you want Pro features and portability then you can always go with the iPad that I've been using the most this year the 11-in iPad Pro not as thin as the 13-in model but still incredibly thin and light apart from the display size specs wise both models are nearly identical both deserving of that Pro monitor for the first time ever we're getting OLED displays on iPads this best-in-class Ultra retina xdr display is stunning and super bright at 1,000 nits of peak brightness this is achieved by stacking two panels on top of each other apple is calling it tandem OLED with promotion technology you also get adaptive refresh rates from 10 to 120 HZ and that also gives you super low latency when using the apple pencil and making all of this power possible packed into such a thin chassis is the new M4 chip the M chips are what powers Apple Computers too and during the time of its release the iPad Pro was the first Apple device to run this new chip just this week Apple announced a new lineup of Max powered by M4 but don't forget this year the iPad Pros came first Apple promises up to four times faster performance on Pro rendering apps regular users are probably not going to venture into the realm of what the iPad Pros can do that's how powerful they are lastly for 1 and 2 tbte iPad Pro Models apple is offering a nanotexture glass display as an optional $100 add-on which I love and over the last few months of jumping between a glossy 13-in model and a matte 11-in model the matte version is the one that I really gravitate towards even if it makes the display less reflective it still maintains the rich colors produced by its OLED panel choosing between the two will boil down to personal preference just remember that because of that 1 tbyte requirement matte models start at $16.99 versus standard glossy models which start at $9.99 now as I alluded to earlier the iPad Pro is probably overkill for most users so I recommend the jump from Air to Pro for that top-of-the-line display if your work demands more power and if you want and can afford the best iPad on offer the iPad Pro has enabled so many possibilities for Pro users apps like procreate and logic pro allow Professionals in these creative fields to do things previously not possible the iPad Pro can handle tasks like 3D rendering and color grading another reason for that Pro name is its Pro camera system it's got a 12 megapixel wide-angle camera that with the Final Cut Pro Camera app you'll be able to record 4K pror video this year Apple took away the ultra wide angle lens which was intended for document scanning instead they gave the iPad Pro a new true tone flash that combined with AI produces better looking document scans by the way that new true tone flash is also available on the new iPad Mini only Pro Models have liar which is useful for lowlight photography as well as augmented reality applications if you're an iPad Pro user then it's a no-brainer you need the apple pencil Pro not only does it have pressure sensitivity Wireless pairing and charging ing for just $50 more you get all the new features like barrel roll squeeze and haptic feedback the $349 magic keyboard is also worth looking into it's different from the one available for the iPad Air and looks super sexy with its new premium bill of materials especially this white one the silver aluminum finish really shines through just make sure you do the math if you're thinking of replacing your laptop with something like this because it does does add up the new magic keyboard comes in two colors to match the two iPad Pro colors space black and silver so should you get the M2 iPad Air or the M4 iPad Pro I think this year it's even more evident that the iPad Pro is really meant for users who need the utmost Empower professionals who use the iPad Pro as their daily drivers or creatives whose preferred apps are procreate Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro notice there's a lot lot of Pros in there the superior display faster performance higher storage and memory options even support for up to a 6K display via its USBC Port is something other iPads don't have and Thunderbolt for super fast data transfer speeds and gigabit Ethernet all are things that only Pro users can really maximize if you don't need it save that $400 premium for a magic keyboard or an apple pencil or even a storage upgrade if you're already a pro user thinking of upgrading then that's going to be a tougher pill to swallow this year if you already have an array of iPad Pro accessories from Apple most of them will not be compatible with the new iPad Pros the new M4 iPad Pros don't support the second gen apple pencil and the previous magic keyboard so which iPad is your Gadget match start by asking yourself these questions what do I need the iPad for how much am I willing to pay do I need a bigger screen will I use an apple pencil my recommendation is if you're on a budget then just get the standard iPad but spend a little bit more and upgrade that storage to 256 GB the iPad Mini is the one to get if you're using it primarily for reading and taking notes and of all things you value portability the most having said that spend $100 more more for the 11in iPad Air if you want more screen real estate and faster performance get the 13-in iPad Air if you love movies on the go or are dabbling in art and could benefit from that big display and lastly if you're a pro user the choice between the 11 and 13in models really depends so ask yourself if you can get more done by paying an extra $300 for a bigger display or if you're like me and prer portability no need to have fomo this time around one is not better than the other and that's why this year pencil Pro which brings even more functionality for pen users like haptic feedback the ability to pinch to bring up tool bars and a new barrel roll feature if you just care about note taking I think the apple pencil USBC is good enough but if you want to dabble more into art then the apple pencil Pro is worth every penny it's also worth pointing out that if you're upgrading from a previous generation iPad Mini or iPad Air than the second generation apple pencil is no longer compatible so iPad Air or iPad Pro hang in there we're talking about the iPad Pro next of all six iPads on offer today believe it or not the 13-in iPad Pro is the thinnest yep it's even thinner than the 13-in iPad Air it's also lighter which is welcome news because I do find find the 12.9 in iPad Pro to be heavy of course if you want Pro features and portability then you can always go with the iPad that I've been using the most this year the 11-in iPad Pro not as thin as the 13-in model but still incredibly thin and light apart from the display size specs wise both models are nearly identical both deserving of that Pro monitor for the first time ever we're getting OLED displays on iPads this best-in-class Ultra retina xdr display is stunning and super bright at 1,000 nits of peak brightness this is achieved by stacking two panels on top of each other apple is calling it tandem OLED with promotion technology you also get adaptive refresh rates from 10 to 120 HZ and that also gives you super low latency when using the apple pencil and making all of this power possible packed into such a thin chassis is the new M4 chip the M chips are what powers Apple Computers too and during the time of its release the iPad Pro was the first Apple device to run this new chip just this week Apple announced a new lineup of Max powered by M4 but don't forget this year the iPad Pros came first Apple promises up to four times faster performance on Pro rendering apps regular users are probably not going to venture into the realm of what the iPad Pros can do that's how powerful they are lastly for 1 and 2 tbte iPad Pro Models apple is offering a nanotexture glass display as an optional $100 add-on which I love and over the last few months of jumping between a glossy 13-in model and a matte 11-in model the matte version is the one that I really gravitate towards even if it makes the display less reflective it still maintains the rich colors produced by its OLED panel choosing between the two will boil down to personal preference just remember that because of that 1 tbyte requirement matte models start at $16.99 versus standard glossy models which start at $9.99 now as I alluded to earlier the iPad Pro is probably overkill for most users so I recommend the jump from Air to Pro for that top-of-the-line display if your work demands more power and if you want and can afford the best iPad on offer the iPad Pro has enabled so many possibilities for Pro users apps like procreate and logic pro allow Professionals in these creative fields to do things previously not possible the iPad Pro can handle tasks like 3D rendering and color grading another reason for that Pro name is its Pro camera system it's got a 12 megapixel wide-angle camera that with the Final Cut Pro Camera app you'll be able to record 4K pror video this year Apple took away the ultra wide angle lens which was intended for document scanning instead they gave the iPad Pro a new true tone flash that combined with AI produces better looking document scans by the way that new true tone flash is also available on the new iPad Mini only Pro Models have liar which is useful for lowlight photography as well as augmented reality applications if you're an iPad Pro user then it's a no-brainer you need the apple pencil Pro not only does it have pressure sensitivity Wireless pairing and charging ing for just $50 more you get all the new features like barrel roll squeeze and haptic feedback the $349 magic keyboard is also worth looking into it's different from the one available for the iPad Air and looks super sexy with its new premium bill of materials especially this white one the silver aluminum finish really shines through just make sure you do the math if you're thinking of replacing your laptop with something like this because it does does add up the new magic keyboard comes in two colors to match the two iPad Pro colors space black and silver so should you get the M2 iPad Air or the M4 iPad Pro I think this year it's even more evident that the iPad Pro is really meant for users who need the utmost Empower professionals who use the iPad Pro as their daily drivers or creatives whose preferred apps are procreate Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro notice there's a lot lot of Pros in there the superior display faster performance higher storage and memory options even support for up to a 6K display via its USBC Port is something other iPads don't have and Thunderbolt for super fast data transfer speeds and gigabit Ethernet all are things that only Pro users can really maximize if you don't need it save that $400 premium for a magic keyboard or an apple pencil or even a storage upgrade if you're already a pro user thinking of upgrading then that's going to be a tougher pill to swallow this year if you already have an array of iPad Pro accessories from Apple most of them will not be compatible with the new iPad Pros the new M4 iPad Pros don't support the second gen apple pencil and the previous magic keyboard so which iPad is your Gadget match start by asking yourself these questions what do I need the iPad for how much am I willing to pay do I need a bigger screen will I use an apple pencil my recommendation is if you're on a budget then just get the standard iPad but spend a little bit more and upgrade that storage to 256 GB the iPad Mini is the one to get if you're using it primarily for reading and taking notes and of all things you value portability the most having said that spend $100 more more for the 11in iPad Air if you want more screen real estate and faster performance get the 13-in iPad Air if you love movies on the go or are dabbling in art and could benefit from that big display and lastly if you're a pro user the choice between the 11 and 13in models really depends so ask yourself if you can get more done by paying an extra $300 for a bigger display or if you're like me and prer portability no need to have fomo this time around one is not better than the other and that's why this year I chosen to go from the larger
