**Dream Spec**
I think I think on the road ready to go out the door with the Iva all that sort of stuff I think it's about 67 67 and in your Henry your dream spec what what options are you sort of going for. I would be having I would have these wheels and tires, I would have the 18in wheels with the altering tread pattern. There a 16 as well isn't it? So the standard wheel is a 16 with the same tread pattern and the side walls are quite tall. Um I would choose the 18s because you get some good on-road performance if you want to go to a track day, they're not going to start rolling over too much, you're not going to they do give more mechanical grip because the side wall is smaller slightly harder but if you do want to drive off-road you can drive around but you have to be a little bit careful because you can't lower the pressures too much in the 18s otherwise you end up squashing the tire onto the rib and getting it pinch flat. Got it, um but I think as a tradeoff for a car that will spend 75% of its life on the road I think the 18s are the one to go for sure.
**Customization Options**
And in terms of sort of the Wilder options then imagine some of your customers are obviously that no two Aerials are alike famously and there'll be some I'm sure which are which are very extreme. So taking the Nomad Mark 2 to its kind of yeah you know the uh how extreme do you want Apex of extremity yeah what does this car look like? And you've said we're going to see a sort of more it extreme if you can picture the old Nomad with the lights with the winch and all that sort of stuff. It will be like that with the LED whips that light up, so you can be extra visible at night. Um it will all it will be all the same sort of options um as a similar sort of cost uh but just a lot of the stuff is more modern.
**Storage Solutions**
LED will have LED spotlights on the top and that's another thing that this uh that the header rail is doing is some of our customers that are using these cars at night Offroad found that if the screen gets very dirty and you turn on your overhead lights the lights were glaring onto the screen. So that is one reason why the the fixings for the lights are all the way back here so you don't get the glare onto the screen.
And talk to me about storage because I've seen some I don't know if they were renders or images of the of the Mark I with you know dhar style. This is another this is another thing where we this is another thing where we listen to our customers. We initially with Nomad one we just went with with a spare wheel carrier and that was it. We then had some guys saying can I have a bike rack so we made a bike rack. Then we had people saying can I have a box so we took a spare wheel carrier cut the spare wheel carrier off put a plate down so you can then mount a box to it. So we have taken all of that into consideration and you can now have any sort of combination of boxes, bike racks, spare Wheels in this in the area at the back here. You can have two small boxes one big box two bike racks and a box a spare wheel and two bike racks just a rack if you just want to kind of strap a soft bag onto it.
**On-Road Performance**
And there's a lot of different things you can strap onto the back of it according to how you want to use your car. But this one of the things is the small boxes is a motorcycle style box so if you want to go out somewhere go on a trip leave the car somewhere and you're taking a helmet you can put your helmet in the lockable box at the back so you don't have to carry your helmet around. Ideal because you're either or if you have a quick release steering wheel as well you're either you're in one of two camps I look very cool with a steering wheel or I don't look cool with a steering wheel so you can choose to lock it in your box of experience speaking absolutely.
**Driving Experience**
So we're going out um on the local roads have a go in this absolutely. I just ask you for the mark one Nomad owner driving this car for the first time you know what are they what are they going to notice what's really going to stand out for them how fast it is? It's really a lot faster but as we've talked about with that big talk figure it's it's much more immediate than the old car. All right it is and that was one thing that happened from atom 3 to atom four as well you can have the same fun but you're just going a bit faster
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello everyone and welcome to crew Kern and the aerial motor Factory which is just behind us and you can see them building atom fours there's a couple of Nomads in build as well and it's actually The Nomad 2 the replacement for the Mark 1 which was released in 2015 but we've come here to see this is the very first nomad 2 and I'm joined here by Henry who's the MD of aiel who's going to tell us a little bit more about this car so Henry the big news G is the Honda motor you got a Ford 2.3 four cylinder that's right yep bigger tubing bigger tub it is much stiffer it's over 60% stiffer okay massiv m one it's a bigger car in terms of footprint is well WI a little bit longer it's a little bit wider the track is slightly wider the wheels are slightly larger and that's all in an effort to make it easier to live with better on road better on track faster more stable at speed more suspension travel okay sorry more everything and just briefly tell us then who who is this car for because we all know about the atom the atom is is basically a road card that can go to Silverstone and you know hang out with the really really serious stuff but the Nomad that goes the other way doesn't it it does it's well The Nomad sort goes both ways really the standard car is kind of all is it will it will do anything it's a great Road car you can take it on track and it'll be fun you can take it onto saly plane or some light green Lanes something like that you're into that sort of thing um or you can modify it like this car we've modified this one has a sports car so this is not too many off-road options it's big brakes lots of power good dampers no winches no bumpers no underbody protection um so this one is going to be pretty fast on the road pretty good round a track but you can take it the other way go with the winches the off-road lights all the underbody protection and go and take it through needy mud if you want to and we're going to see one of those later we are going to be building that car later this year so if you want to come back and have another go and see how stuck you can get it abely take it up to Sweet lamp um let's talk about power for a moment the old car had about 230 this new car starts at 260 and then you can sort of amp it up to 300 and I was doing a little bit of um research before coming down here even at 260 in the base tune you've got a power to weight ratio that is the same as basically the same as a 911 Turbo S and a footprint the size of a k Picanto so the aerial spirit is still you know live and kicking in this car even though it's a bit bigger and a bit more grown up than before and that's one thing that we really didn't want to lose out of nomad one was its nomadness so we did spend quite a long time on the road Offroad keeping those driving Dynamics with it kind of leaning over ducking and Diving under breaking and looking at the sky when you're accelerating uh and of course when you upgrade to the higher power version to the 300 horsepower version which is the same power as the old car but the torque figure is absolutely through the roof the old car is probably 300 350 Newtons and the new car in the upgraded version is 550 Newtons okay and we're going to find out how that manifests on the road so like an atom uh The Nomad will come the upgraded noad will come with an adjustable boost system so you can dial it back to position one which is your 260 horsepower fairly sort of mellow on the road still very brisk uh but then into position two you get full power and around 90% of the torque delivery with a nice smooth curve so it's not too aggressive and then put it into number three put your mats in the passenger seat see how long you can keep the wheel spinning quite now look one of the things that we've always loved about atoms is uh the quality of the manufacturing and obviously the sort of skeletonized nature of the car which puts it all on display so let's just move around the car CU I read somewhere that only the filler cap and the steering wheel are carried over from the old NAD so I mean it is an entirely new car the whole car is brand new so let's start with these dampers for example you've got remote Reservoir dampers on there eyb Springs and tell us a little bit about those because presumably there's some sort of choice in terms of the suspension control so this is an upgraded damper this is an oens option which is a three-way adjustable it's got WRC internals so if you want to go absolutely flying around sweet L and do a long very high jump absolutely go for it we've done it we've been there and that's how we test these cars we go up to Sweet lamb and we just go round and round and round until something breaks then we fix it keep going round and round and if we can do two days without anything breaking or falling off and just go around with it with in the evening with a with a spanner check everything's on there I think we've we've done pretty well um so as I said this is the option damper three-way adjustable the standard damper will be fixed but will'll be still very good very compliant on off-road is that more Road s of a standard it standard setup is it Road leading it's difficult it's a bit easier with an atom for a standard setup because it just has to go down the road and it doesn't need to perform on track it doesn't have to perform off road whereas The Nomad we have to have quite a happy medium between soft enough to be good off-road but firm enough to be good if the customer wants to go round a track there will be another option of a billstein damper which will be a lot softer than the standard and then we've got the oin which is harder than the standard which is better for track use and highspeed off-road use double wishbones front and rear has the geometry changed markedly from before obviously it's a wider car but in terms of the sort of behavior and dive and squat and it's it hasn't changed we have added a very small percentage of antis Squat and anti-dive okay and it makes the car slightly more precise and that is because we wanted to do that because there's so much more power I don't think I would want to drive a nomad with 515 mutons I think it would be quite wild so basically you've you you've had a duty of care to put some some anti-dive into it yeah and it it makes it it makes it a an easier car to have fun in but we haven't lost the Nomad feeling of it ducking diving leaning around in the corners you still get all that stuff and tell me a little bit then about this um it's not a snorkel is it it's an intake uh that feeds the intercooler is that right because on the atom the inter cooler is fed from underneath the car but that is not a good idea on a on a dirt road car it you don't want rocks in your intercooler absolutely so H tell us a little bit about this then okay so this is a feature on every Nomad CU on the historically on The Nomad we had a raised air intake uh this is permanent on this car we've got two air intakes at the top and they are directly linked to this uh panel here we call it the header rail at the top of the windscreen and the intake for the top is where the for the intercooler comes in and underneath is for the engine the air for the intercooler is guided in by these fins over the top of the header Rail and underneath you can put your hand all the way through and that guides the air into the engine intake so you have actually got two designed mhm air intakes channeling the air in there so really without this the air you need basically completely bypasses the the snorkel really it will still get there but this makes it much more efficient it reduces turbulence coming off the screen it just directed in nicely makes the air a bit calmer and that way you can get smoother power better cooling for the intercooler and tell us a little bit about the cabin then obviously steering wheel one of the only one of two parts carried over from the old one but um this is a bigger cabin isn't it and it's a little bit more um refined is probably it is a little bit more it's another it's another place where we spent I we spent a lot of time on whole car but there's a few things where we wanted to spend a little bit of extra time uh to bring the car into the kind of the 21st century almost uh the old car had an LCD type display and this has got a full color TFT screen uh we've got in the center uh we've got some can buttons so instead of having lots of separate switches with lots of wires coming out of the back which makes the wiring a bit fiddly and complicated and not that neat we've got a small panel that we can activate different buttons for different for different things mhm when you get in the car shortly if you have you driven an atom 4 I I have driven an atom for it's a very familiar place to be you sit down and you think yes I'm in my aerial it's it feels as it should uh we hav we haven't changed any of the driving position or anything from the atom 4 because we're very happy with that we spent a lot of time there uh the only the only difference is we can now Supply a wider seat okay and what's the take up on that out of interest it's 5050 and it's not some people just want a wider seat for Comfort sure because the standard seat is it's pretty snug um I'm I'm not too bad in the standard I'm 6'2 and nearly 100 kilg and I fit into the standard seat absolutely fine um it's just if some of our customers want some padding on the seat um so we would advise them to have the wider seat to put the padding in so you retain the kind of the snugness of the seat with your own padding but I mean it's not all uh luxury is it I'm noticing so the pedal box is still fixed and you move the seats manually right yes with the nuts and bolt we can do we can do you an individually ratcheting seat in carbon fiber mhm um it's a it's an option not that many people go for it on the Nomad they're usually pretty happy with the with the standard seat I've driven thousands of miles in those seats and they are pretty comfortable to be honest and let's talk about the drive line then obviously you've got this new Ford engine yes um gearbox Ford Ford okay how many speeds six speed six speed like the old car and the diff where's the diff coming from uh the diff is a qu diff qu so an ATB yeah great diff and in terms of gearbox choice is this going to be the only gearbox you're offering or you going to get something a little bit more uh we will do yes so the the Ford um manual will be the standard gearbox and we will do a sequential gearbox like the atom which will also have a Quai differential in it and just more praic then build time here in two and a half years is that about right is about right yeah okay price is 60 starts at about 65 they start I think I think on the road ready to go out the door with the Iva all that sort of stuff I think it's about 67 67 and in your Henry your dream spec what what options are you sort of going for I would be having I would have these wheels and tires I would have the 18in wheels with the altering tread pattern there a 16 as well isn't it so the
