The Shakedown: A Look at the MR2's CO2 Installation and Test Hit
As we sit here at the track with our trusty MR2, we're excited to put its new CO2 installation to the test. The car has just been taken to the alignment shop to ensure it's running straight, and now we're ready to make a Shakedown pass. Our goal is to see how well the car performs on its new setup, which includes a reduced boost pressure of 50 pounds.
We've got our CO2 system installed and turned down, almost 10 psi from where it was when it ran the previous test. We're eager to see if this reduction will bring out the best in our MR2. With the car's performance in mind, we'll be taking a few laps around the track to get a feel for how she handles on the new setup. As we fire up the engine, we're checking our oil pressure to make sure everything is within normal limits. And...it looks like we've got some oil on our back window! Hopefully, it's not a major problem, and we can still salvage this test hit. We'll take a closer look at what happened later, but for now, let's focus on getting a good read on the car's performance.
We just did our first test hit, and everything was working fine...until we lost one of the valve cover grommets. The O-ring failed, spewing oil everywhere! Luckily, it didn't seem to affect the engine's performance too much, as we're still getting good power on 50 pounds. We'll need to check the compression to make sure everything is running smoothly, but so far, so good.
The parachute system seemed to be working just fine, even with a little smoke billowing out of it. We were about to move forward with our hands when I remembered to go back for the button...oops! But all in all, the CO2 system seems to be doing its job well. We'll need to take another look at that valve cover grommet later and make sure everything is secure.
We're still getting a good feel for the car's performance on 50 pounds, but it's clear that we've got some work to do before we can say this setup is complete. For now, let's just enjoy the quiet moments with our trusty MR2 and get ready to take on the rest of the competition.

local Airsoft and uh army supply store and they had some CO2 tanks and they were just down the street so we were able to get this bottle filled and now we gotta get this guy into the MR2 get it mounted up get our parachute handle on there and the MR2 will be ready to go for the weekend listen for the VTEC at 6000 RPM my head almost just barely hit the head rest when that me Tech hit all right guys we are back at the house got our bottle filled ready to go and why is already went ahead and started installing the new parachute handle so this is the old one that came out of the MR2 our manual dangly guy over here but now we got a CO2 assisted unit yeah already up in there push the button the explosions happen and parachute comes out hopefully no explosions but we got the handle up in there in the same position it was before so I just got that guy up in there we are going to be reusing the same parachute cable even though the kit came with the new one so this will just be a good backup we got the steering wheel pull off the car got our button ready to go nice solid click on that guy and then we also did get a brand new parachute as well as I said in the last video our parachute is getting pretty worn out this thing is taking a lot of abuse it melted from the exhaust in the past down here so even though that's just the outer bag the Chute on the inside itself has seen a lot of use from dragging on the ground and stuff so we are just going through everything refreshing the whole parachute system while we're at it and uh yeah getting this guy on a push button so my hands do not have to come off the wheel and hopefully keep this thing a little straighter on the top end yeah it always gets a little sketchy up top you can tell when he goes for that handle because the car darts around a little bit so yeah driving her with one wheel and yeah shoot for 200 miles an hour you know both hands on the way you got to stay focused on this thing yeah because it was taking some Force to get this handle to open up sometimes so I was you know fighting I was bracing with my other hand which was on the steering wheel which is was not good so he's also getting the uh four port or actually this is a three port Mac valve it's getting that guy installed right there and the button will trigger the solenoid which will let CO2 go into the valve there to open the parachute and if there's any malfunction it still has the handle on there to manually open the Chute as well yep so yeah within a couple minutes we'll be able to try it out and uh make sure it works so yeah get everything installed yep finished this up real quick and give her the old testaroo then We're Off to the Races hopefully to the first place probably not but we'll give it our best shot come on MR2 you can do it we have faith it's only six seconds it's only six seconds stick cars we got this all right time to get a new one nice that was depressing gotta do it to the new one come on out of there oh God damn it you know they're fresh parachute dude it doesn't even have holes in it what foreign ready yeah all right all right guys we are just about ready to go the bottle is mounted back here in the corner nice and tucked out of the way and it is right by the passenger door so if we do happen to forget to open that guy yeah I can be able to Wyatt to come turn that on real quick so we have to remember to make sure the bottle is on and armed and ready to go and then we have it wired to this last switch here on the switch panel so now when I drive the car right before I make a pass every switch on this panel needs to be on we have our two for the first ignitions we have the ice box we have the slipper and then now the last one activates the parachute which is this button right here we decided to put it on a switch just in case we were in the lanes or something and someone accidentally pressed the switch if we had it hot the whole time and popped our shoot out without us wanting that to happen with no safety pin in it or something so right realistically the only time we need that is when I'm gonna make a pass so got her on the switch and uh she's ready to go right yep you real quick test hit all right here we go guys there she is oh I like the blow off valve that's pretty sweet yeah that's quick too you really don't even have to hold the button it's just a clue just a click oh yeah that's all she needs hell yeah be able to keep your hands on the wheel and birds with one stone there nice so yeah he's got to get that new Simpson parachute on there I'll just letting some paint dry because I never got to paint this guy just blasted it a little bit and then we will get that on there and then we'll be ready to go yeah off the races go wrong with the big dogs yep do it last thing we need to do is take the MR2 to double check the alignment since we did change those rear lower control arms we got them set pretty much exactly where they were before but with how fast we're going we just want to make sure that the alignment is on point and nothing changed so we're going to drive it down to the alignment shop and uh do that and then she will be all ready to go for the track and we have to be there tomorrow morning for qualifying so let's bring on over get the alignment done and we are good to go here we are all right guys we are all good to go definitely good thing we brought it because the toe is off a good degree or so on each of the rear tires there but we got her all squared away back to the settings where we normally run is ready to roll s for the entire kingdom here in Seffner always helping me out get back to the house pop the rear end out of her yeah here's the old one that thing is Beefy it's a freaking unit so I'm gonna throw it on the scales see how much weight we're gonna lose with the other one I'm out of breath wheeled that all the way over from the garage yeah all the way through the grass so yeah we're gonna get a weight on it and then uh I'll have the other one ready to go in here probably tomorrow give that a lift what you think it is let's see here big thick nice that is definitely she's a unit yeah all right I'm gonna yeah I'm gonna balance it what are we sitting at 483 dude they are not light at all holy crap I'm gonna go ahead and get all this stuff swapped over to the other axle and then uh a couple hundred pounds freeway yeah my goal is 150 pounds would be ideal so all right guys we're here at the track with the MR2 we got the CO2 installed as you guys just saw and we got it turned down we're getting yeah everything was right where it needed to be 524 to the eighth and that was on 50 pounds so that's exactly what it normally runs not the greatest 60 foot on that one either chatter the tires a little bit but the car was going straight just going to look into the compression real quick make sure everything's happy and I normally don't put a GoPro on the back for a parachute cam but one time I did dude we got a big squirt of oil but we uh also did a compression check on the engine just to make sure that there wasn't any excess blow-by that led to that it turns out that these just needed to be snug down a little bit more so we got that back on there it's nice and tight the engine is healthy and happy should be ready to go and we will be qualifying later this evening but everything's alignment done and we are good to go here we are all right guys we are all good to go definitely good thing we brought it because the toe is off a good degree or so on each of the rear tires there but we got her all squared away back to the settings where we normally run is ready to roll s for the entire kingdom here in Seffner always helping me out get back to the house pop the rear end out of her yeah here's the old one that thing is Beefy it's a freaking unit so I'm gonna throw it on the scales see how much weight we're gonna lose with the other one I'm out of breath wheeled that all the way over from the garage yeah all the way through the grass so yeah we're gonna get a weight on it and then uh I'll have the other one ready to go in here probably tomorrow give that a lift what you think it is let's see here big thick nice that is definitely she's a unit yeah all right I'm gonna yeah I'm gonna balance it what are we sitting at 483 dude they are not light at all holy crap I'm gonna go ahead and get all this stuff swapped over to the other axle and then uh a couple hundred pounds freeway yeah my goal is 150 pounds would be ideal so all right guys we're here at the track with the MR2 we got the CO2 installed as you guys just saw and we got it turned down we're getting ready to make a Shakedown pass since we did take it to the alignment shop I just want to make sure the car is going straight so I'm gonna do an eighth mile hit maybe go a little past the Eighth Mile if it feels okay I do know this car pretty well now and now that it's turned down almost 10 psi from where it was at when it ran the seven five uh which should be pretty good so we just want to make sure that the car is going straight and that the CO2 parachute release works just fine and then we will be qualifying later tonight and then tomorrow is the race for elimination so we're gonna go ahead and pull it up and uh make a test hit well a little bit of smoke coming out of the MR2 I don't know what that's about but right at 829 to 132. have to see what that Smoke's about though definitely a habit to go for the shoe handle with my hand but I stopped myself Midway through and then went back for the button so I'll definitely have to get used to that unfortunately I saw some smoke back there and it looks like we got some oil on our back window so hopefully she's okay everything was running fine so to fire it up and make sure we got good oil pressure and stuff no pressure they definitely spent a lot of a lot of oil out so I'm not sure something came as we'll have to take a look at it well we just did our first test hit and everything was working fine but found out that we lost this valve cover grommet right here the O-ring that went on that guy and it spewed a whole bunch of oil because we're running a lot of boost and built a lot of crankcase pressure and it literally just shot right out of that guy I actually have the GoPro that was right up here and you can see how much is spewed out of there got our brand new parachute soaked with oil so that sucks we're thinking this guy might have just been loose because we did just do a valve cover gasket but we're also going to do a compression check on this thing real quick just to make sure that all the cylinders are where they should be and we're not building an excess amount of crankcase pressure to cause that to happen I'm pretty sure this has happened to me when I had a twin turbo setup I lost one of those and it was a similar outcome with oil going everywhere but just to be sure we want to double check it and uh go from there but it's still making good power on 50 pounds it trapped 145 to the Eighth Mile still did a 5-2 and it was a 820 letting out way early and then the parachute button did work fine even though I was about to move forward with my hands and then I went back for it but yeah everything was right where it needed to be 524 to the eighth and that was on 50 pounds so that's exactly what it normally runs not the greatest 60 foot on that one either chatter the tires a little bit but the car was going straight just going to look into the compression real quick make sure everything's happy and I normally don't put a GoPro on the back for a parachute cam but one time I did dude we got a big squirt of oil but we uh also did a compression check on the engine just to make sure that there wasn't any excess blow-by that led to that it turns out that these just needed to be snug down a little bit more so we got that back on there it's nice and tight the engine is healthy and happy should be ready to go and we will be qualifying later this evening but everything's looking good we're going to save the car until qualifying and then we'll do a full quarter mile pass probably on this same boost level and then just kind of go from there we saw some other state cars show up a bunch of people are rolling in so see how she does tonight qualifying and then tomorrow will be in we're gonna
