Apple Releases Emergency iOS Update: A Comprehensive Overview

Hey guys, welcome back to the channel! Today, Apple has released an interesting emergency iOS update for everyone, including iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watch. This software update brings with it two improvements and security patches that are recommended for all users to install on their iPhones.

The update comes about two weeks before we see the official release of iOS 17, so let's dive right into what's new with the latest iOS 16.6.1 as well as iPad OS 16.6.1. Aside from iOS 16.6.1 and iPad OS 16.6.1, Apple has also updated Watch OS to version 9.6.2, which is available for the Apple Watch as of right now. Additionally, a Mac OS Ventura 13.5.2 is available for the Mac as well.

If you're not testing any betas, this software is available for you to download as of right now. However, we're not sure if Apple will be releasing a beta 9 for iOS 17 maybe later today or tomorrow. So, let's go ahead and update your devices now! To do this, you want to go into your iPhone or iPad and navigate to Settings > General > Software Update. You should see iOS 16.6.1 populate for you on your device, along with Apple Watch and Mac OS as well. Make sure to update right away.

Now, let's take a look at the security content within iOS 16.6.1 and iPad OS. There are two issues that Apple is addressing, including image i/o, which basically means that if someone sends you a malicious image, they can actually take control of your device. This can happen through email or message or Airdrop. A maliciously crafted image could execute code on your iPhone.

The second issue is with the Wallet application. For the wallet, see the impact: maliciously crafted attachments can result in arbitrary code execution on an Apple device. Apple is aware of this issue and has been used in the wild. Therefore, they're patching this sooner rather than later, which means that it's not going to wait for iOS 17.
