My Car Hobby: A Life Long Obsession
I'm Kevin and this is my performance garage. I'm a Sydney lawyer, and I guess you could say that I've been involved with cars for as long as I can remember. But if I had to pinpoint the dominant thing about my car hobby for the past 20 years, it would have to be my obsession with Japanese cars and culture. Yes, like many people, I've gone through the whole gamut of experiences when it comes to cars - from owning a turbo Nissan to having a VTEC Honda, even attempting to build a VIP car (which didn't exactly work out as planned). But for me, that journey has finally come full circle. Now, I find myself more interested in classic cars than ever before.
My pride and joy is my 1971 Skyline 2000 GT Hakuk, which I've been restoring for the past five years. There's something about this car that really fascinates me - not just its history, but also the history of the Skyland Mark and the company behind it. Being able to restore a piece of automotive history and immerse myself in the whole scene has been an absolute dream come true. My other car is an 1985 Mazda Luce Royal Classic Rotary Turbo, which I affectionately refer to as my "family beater." This car is a real head-turner - not only is it a big Japanese sedan from the 80s, but it also comes with some truly unique features like rear seats and a drinks fridge inside. What's even more remarkable about this car, however, is that it's one of only around 500 Royal Classics that Mazda produced with a rotary engine.
Despite its rarity, this car has become my go-to daily driver - I use it to take my kids to soccer games, swimming lessons, and birthday parties. It's a testament to the fact that even some of the most unlikely cars can still hold their own in everyday life. And speaking of unlikely cars, my third and arguably favorite car is a 193 Porsche 911 - yes, you read that right, a 193 model! For those who don't know, the smell and feel of these classic Porsches are like no other. Ever since I was a teenager, I've always been fascinated by these iconic cars, and it's amazing to think that I now have one of my own.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that for me, my car hobby has become a way of life - a way of exploring different cultures, appreciating the beauty of automotive engineering, and connecting with like-minded people who share my passion. Whether I'm tinkering with my Skyline or cruising around town in my Royal Classic, I feel truly alive when I'm behind the wheel of one of these incredible machines.
