She Made This Trendy Planter from An Old Detergent Container 😱 _ DIY Upcycled Planters

The Art of Upcycling: Creating a Unique Moon Planter from Recycled Materials

As I embarked on this project, I had a clear vision of what I wanted to create – a beautiful moon planter that would add a touch of elegance to any room. The planter was inspired by the ones I've seen online, and with some creativity and patience, I transformed an old container into a stunning piece of art.

The first step in creating my moon planter was to remove the lid and top piece of plastic from the container. This proved to be a bit tricky, but using hot water and adhesive remover, I was able to fully scrape them off. Once the lid was removed, we were left with the main body of the container, which would become the base of our moon planter.

Next, we needed to remove the existing top piece of plastic from the container. This required a bit more effort, but using hot water and adhesive remover again, I was able to cut it off completely. The resulting shape was rough around the edges, so we decided to use a craft knife to carefully cut along the lines of the treads at the top of the container. This allowed us to remove the thick plastic that was covering the opening.

With the top section removed, we were left with a smooth surface that was perfect for painting. I used a marker to freehand over the side of the container, creating an extension of the moon shape that would soon become our planter's defining feature. Next, I carefully cut out the front section of the container, using my best judgment to ensure that it matched up with the back.

Now that we had both the front and back sections of the container cut out, we could start thinking about how to bring our moon planter to life. I decided to use a circle as a reference point to create a more realistic moon shape, tracing it carefully onto the front section of the container using my marker. With the lines in place, we were ready to move on to the next step – adding color to our planter.

I chose to paint my moon planter gold, just like the ones I'd seen online. Using brushed metal gold acrylic paint, I carefully applied multiple coats, allowing each one to dry before adding the next. The resulting color was beautiful and rich, with a subtle sheen that caught the light perfectly.

To complete our planter, we needed something to hold it in place – a ring that would keep it stable on our surface. I used hot glue to attach a small ring to the bottom of the planter, securing it firmly in place. And finally, after what felt like hours of work, our moon planter was complete.

The final step was to add some finishing touches – first, I created a base for our planter using an old empty roll of masking tape. I painted this white and then gold, matching the color of my planter perfectly. With everything in place, our moon planter looked stunning – just like the ones I'd seen online.

The final touch was adding some greenery to our beautiful new planter. I chose a small succulent plant that would thrive in the indoor environment, layering it carefully into the container with some rocks at the bottom for drainage and stability. As I stood back to admire my handiwork, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride – I'd transformed an old container into something truly special.

Upcycling is all about creativity and resourcefulness, turning discarded materials into beautiful works of art that can bring joy to our lives. With patience, persistence, and a bit of imagination, even the most unlikely objects can become stunning pieces of furniture or decor. As I looked at my moon planter, I couldn't help but wonder – what would you create if you had an old container to transform?

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso you know when you're doing laundry and you get down to the very last detergent pod and then you just have this big hunk of plastic and you don't know what to do with it well i was looking at this and i was like you know i bet i could turn that into one of those trendy moon planters that's been going around lately so that's exactly what i'm going to show you how to do today it's easier than you think so let's get started so the first thing we're going to do is remove any labels from the container the labels that actually come on the container when you buy it can be a little tricky to remove but i just used hot water and then adhesive remover and i was able to fully scrape them off so now we're just going to remove the lid and then we're gonna pop off this top piece of plastic there we go it might take a little muscle so now it should look something like this and in order to get that moon shape that we're going for we're going to need something round to trace so i found that this pot lid that i had was about the right size but you know you can grab anything round that's about this size so position it so that you end up with a nice moon shape and don't put it too far down you want to have enough space down here that you can actually fill it with soil so i think that's looking pretty good we're just going to trace it with a marker but before we start cutting this line i actually found that it was pretty much impossible to cut straight through these treads at the top with normal household tools so instead grab a craft knife a really sharp one and we're just going to cut all the way around this opening so that we can get rid of this really thick plastic at the top be extra careful with this step and take your time if you don't want any craft knife related injuries all right so now that we have the top off of this container grab a marker and we're just going to free hand over the side to extend that line and now we're going to carefully cut out this front section and you'll notice we haven't drawn anything on the back yet and i found that it was easier to get the back to match up once we've already cut out the front all right so after carefully cutting all of that out we should end up with a shape like this and now we can just grab our circle again to trace on the back these containers have these little hand holds so you just kind of have to draw over them and do your best and also don't worry about it being totally perfect to match the front as long as they're close enough it should look fine in the end all right so you can see that we're really starting to get that moon shape that we're going for so our next step is to just get rid of all of this excess marker and we're going to do that with rubbing alcohol just get a little bit onto a paper towel and then when you rub it over the marker it will lift up and disappear the next thing we're going to do is grab some sandpaper and we're going to sand the edges and also all of the surfaces on the outside and on the inside you might also want to use your scissors to smooth down any spots that are a little too sharp and then go over the edges with sandpaper to smooth them out and go over the surfaces to give us more texture for our paint to stick to and now we are ready to paint so all of the planters that i've seen online that i'm emulating are gold so i'm also going to paint mine gold but of course you can paint yours any color that you like and it might be faster to spray paint it but i already had this brushed metal gold acrylic paint so that's what i'm going to be using it might look a little streaky at first but just keep adding more coats and the color should build up so in addition to our actual planter i also want to give it a base for that i'm using an old empty roll of masking tape i'm going to paint this white and then the same color gold so now that the paint is dry i think that's looking great our next step is to take our ring and we're just gonna hot glue it onto the bottom of the planter and that is our moon planter finished i love how that looks i think it looks so good it looks just like the ones that i've seen online all we have to do now is add a plant so i'm actually going to start by layering some rocks in the bottom both for drainage and also because this is not very heavy it's really lightweight so i want to weigh it down at the bottom so it doesn't get tipped over all right that feels way more solid now so now i'm going to add my little plant oh that looks so good i can't even handle it i love how this turned out i honestly think this might be one of my favorite projects i've ever done i had a vision and that vision perfectly translated to reality which as we all know in crafting does not always happen but this is so cute it turned out exactly how i was picturing so i would love to know in the comments would you make one of these do you ever do craft projects out of your recycling
